ADAM JOSEPH GRISMER
The funeral service for Adam Joseph Grismer, 65, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 10am, Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at First Reformed Church with Rev. David Dawn officiating. Burial will be at 3:00pm at Bethany Cemetery, Hosmer, SD. Adam died Friday, August 28, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 1-7pm Tuesday, September 1, with a prayer service at 7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Adam Joseph Grismer was born on April 13, 1944 to Frank and Magdalena (Fix) Grismer on the family farm NE of Bowdle, SD. He grew up on the farm and attended country school for seven years. Adam then finished school in Hosmer, SD.
Adam married Arlys Graff on February 6, 1966 at Hosmer, SD. They made their home in the Hosmer area. Adam and Arlys worked on Tony Grismer’s farm near Hosmer from 1966 until 1972. They then worked on the Lindell Ranch East of Leola from 1972 until moving to Aberdeen in 1976. Adam worked at Seidel Well Drilling, Mohr’s Fencing and the City of Aberdeen over the next few years. He then worked for K.O. Lee Co. from 1980 until 2008. During that time, Adam also worked part-time at econo foods for 10 years.
Adam was a member of First Reformed Church, Aberdeen. He enjoyed woodworking and working in the garden. Adam liked to hunt and was known for preparing wild game. Fishing with his grandchildren was one of Adam’s greatest passions. He liked to watch Western’s and wrestling and enjoyed listening to Polka music, Trucker songs, but especially loved hearing Arlys play piano.
Grateful for having shared Adam’s life are his loving wife, Arlys, two daughters, Paula Nelson and Lisa Grismer, all of Aberdeen, three brothers, Leo, Frank (Marlyn) and Joe Grismer, all of Bowdle, five sisters, Melvina Lesmeister of Thatcher, AZ, Mary Wentz of Tuscon, AZ, Leona Schmidt of Gettysburg, SD, Madonna (Oscar) Carlson of Java, SD, and Betty (Harvey) Heyd of Long Lake, SD, and three grandchildren, Karla Nelson, Bradley Nelson and Braiden Nelson.
Adam was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Magdalena, daughter Karla Kay Grismer, Granddaughter Michaela Ann Nelson, and his brother Andrew Grismer.
LARRY SCHUMACHER
Larry D. Schumacher, 56, passed away suddenly on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital, Aberdeen. His funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 1, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1429 N. Dakota Street. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held from 1-7pm, Monday, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street.
Larry was born September 25, 1952 in Aberdeen to Richard and Thelma (Roundy) Schumacher. On February 22, 1975, he married the love of his life Darlene Vilhauer at Trinity Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. They were blessed with two sons, Jason born in 1976, followed by Joseph in 1980.
A graduate of Central High School, Larry joined the U.S. Army in 1970, serving in Germany for 3 years before being honorably discharged in 1974. He returned to Aberdeen and began working in the family dairy equipment business, Schumacher Sales Company. Larry and his brother James later purchased the business from their father. Larry and James expanded their business to include the popular West Side Bait Shop and Bar & Grill. For the past several years, Larry and Darlene were the sole owners/operators of Schumacher Sales. Over the years Schumacher Sales has received many awards for top sales and service in the United States.
Known to friends and family as "The Walleye King," Larry loved fishing, a hobby shared with his wife and family. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing in the wide open spaces of South Dakota. Larry enjoyed travelling with Darlene to their favorite vacation destinations which were Barcelona Spain, Hawaii, Alaska, and Los Cabos Mexico. Larry enjoyed experiencing new places and meeting new people. Larry also loved grilling a great steak, a skill he perfected during his years of ownership of the West Side Bar & Grill.
Larry was a wonderful husband, father, friend, brother, and business man. He will always be remembered for his honesty, integrity, kindness, work ethics, and his great sense of humor. He was deeply loved by all and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
Larry is survived by his wife, Darlene; two sons, Jason (Jill) Schumacher of Redfield and Joe (Shauna Jensen) Schumacher of Aberdeen; five sisters: Mrs. Tom (Charlene) Bresadola of Centennial, CO; Laurie Schumacher of Goodview, VA; Mrs. John (Deb) Cowan of Onalaska, WI; Pat Dolney of St. Paul, MN; and Denise Moore of Salina, KS; three brothers, Kenton (Evelyn) Schumacher of Tennessee; James (Christine) Schumacher of Lewiston, MO; and Rick (Cindy) Schumacher of Lakeville, MN; sixteen nieces and nephews and their Yorkie Teddy.
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, nephew Dave Dolney and beloved dog, Daisy.
CARROLL D. ERICKSON
Funeral services for Carroll D. Erickson, 86, Aberdeen, SD, are 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 28, 2009, at Plymouth Congregational UCC, Pastor Jill Warner officiating. Burial is at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD at a later date. Carroll died Tuesday, August 25, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.
Visitation is 1-7 p.m. Thursday with family present from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Carroll D. Erickson was born on November 17, 1922 at Sturgis, SD to Elmer H. and Bessie (Smith) Erickson. He attended grade school at Alkali Hall School #56, graduating from the 8th grade in 1936. Upon graduation he worked for area farmers for three years. In 1939 he entered Sturgis High School, graduating in 1943. In 1945 he joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Cabot CVL 28 in the South Pacific during World War II, and on the USS Philadelphia for a short time after the war. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1946.
Carroll returned to Sturgis and worked as a farm hand and a mechanic at an implement company in Sturgis. He then worked at the Veterans Hospital, Ft. Meade, SD as a fireman. In 1952 he joined the South Dakota Highway Patrol and served in Milbank, Chamberlain, Rapid City, and Custer, SD before being transferred to Aberdeen in 1973.
Carroll married Geraldine A. “Gerry” Hobert on May 12, 1957 at Sturgis, SD. He retired from the SDHP in 1982 after 30 years and three months service.
Carroll was a member of Plymouth Congregational UCC, Aberdeen, since 1974. There he served on Missions, ushered, and was on the Trustee’s and Deacon’s Committee. He was a member of the SD Peace Officers and SD Highway Patrol Retirees. Carroll was active in the Kiwanis Club and the Elks Lodge in Aberdeen and the Lion’s Club in Custer, SD. He was a member of the Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24 and VFW in Aberdeen. Carroll served as a volunteer in RSVP.
Grateful for having shared Carroll’s life are his wife, Gerry of Aberdeen, sons, Boyd (Gayle) Erickson of Britton, SD, and Gary Guinn of Las Cruces, NM, daughter, JoAnne (Bob) Pullins of Rapid City, SD, brothers Melvin Erickson of Sturgis, SD, and Wilbur Erickson of Redmond, WA sister, Edna Matz of Sturgis, SD, brother-in-law, Mac McDougall, sisters-in-law, Pat Erickson, Carolyn Erickson, and Agnes Erickson, grandchildren, Clay (Lacey) Erickson, Casey Erickson, Cody Erickson, Keith Pullins and Shane (Heather) Pullins, great grandchildren, Tiyanna Erickson, Austin Pullins, Jacob Pullins, Emilee Pullins, and many nieces and nephews.
Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Lloyd, Wayne, Richard, and Raymond, and one sister, Mary Lou McDougall.

DONALD W. REED
The service for Donald W. Reed, 79, Brentford, SD, will be 10:00am, Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Brentford Congregational UCC, Brentford, SD, with Pastor Jon Damaska officiating. Burial will be at Bethany Cemetery, Brentford, with Military Honors by Brentford American Legion Post #242. Donald died Thursday, August 20 at his home.
Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Friday, with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Donald W. Reed was born November 21, 1929 to Harry & Margaret (Heber) Reed at Faulkton, SD. He attended elementary school in Faulkton and graduated from Redfield High School.
On June 15, 1951, Donald married LaVonne B. Miller at Rockham, SD. To this union was added four children. He served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1953-1955. Donald earned a Bacheleor Degree in 1958 from Northern State Teacher’s College and his Masters Degree in 1962. He taught in the Northwestern School District for twenty years and worked for South Dakota Wheat Growers for seventeen years, retiring in 1990. LaVonne died in 1981.
Donald cherished spending time with family and grandchildren. He loved woodworking, fishing and playing cards.

SHIRLEY L. KRUEGER
The service for Shirley Krueger, 85, Aberdeen, will be 11:00am, Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Faith United Methodist Church, with Pastor Jack Erickson officiating. Burial is at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Beloved mother and grandmother Shirley Krueger passed into the next life on Monday, August 17.
Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home 1111 S. Main St.
Shirley was born on April 10, 1924 in Webster to Zopher & Ellen (Stage) Davis. She grew up in Waubay and lived there primarily with her mother until her late 20's. Shirley filled her life with books and reading, gardening, travel, and children. Shirley had a lifelong interest in education and she treasured her husband Arnold, her children, and grandchildren. Shirley was a graduate of Waubay HS and Northern State Teachers College.
Shirley went on to teach school in a number of small towns in northeastern South Dakota. In 1949 she took a position in Wetonka where she met Arnold Krueger. They were married in 1955, settled in Aberdeen and later moved to Bath. Shirley ran a busy household in Bath for 50 years and was an active member in her childrens' schools and in the Bath community.
Grateful for having shared Shirley's life are her children, Joan (Lynn) Schlepp, Aberdeen, Jon Krueger, Aberdeen, Todd (Becky) Krueger, Sioux Falls, Meri (Yasser Farra) Krueger, Austin, Texas, grandchildren, Christopher (Michelle), Lynn, Jr., Shantelle, Desiree, Michelle, Jennifer (Jeremy), Eric, Jessica, Yasmeen, Mahria and Sanaa, great-grandchildren, Janey, Payton, Gavin, & Kristin. Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Arnold, her parents and siblings.
Casketbearers: Roland Smith, Joe Elsperger, Curt Erickson. Stan Monson, Lenard Buntrock, and Bill Schanzenbach.
Shirley loved Big Band music and dancing. She loved to sing, loved people, and loved to laugh. Shirley was the center of the Krueger family - we are so grateful to have had her in our lives. With heavy hearts we say goodbye for now to our beloved mother and grandmother Shirley Krueger.
PYRL GOODRICH
Pyrl Goodrich, 101, of Redfield, died Friday, August 14, 2009 at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield where she had been a resident since January 13, 2004. At her request, there will not be a service. There will be a private burial at a later date.

Pyrl Hague was born on July 24, 1908 to George and Ida (Wiess) Hague at Tulare. She attended school in Tulare and Redfield and received a B.S. degree in elementary education from Northern State University.
Pyrl married Cleon Goodrich in March of 1930 and they made their home at Leola, SD. She taught school for forty-two years, twenty-eight of which were in the Leola Public School system where she also served as elementary principal for eight years.
In 1960 Pyrl was one of the three SD teachers to receive an award from the Valley Forge Foundation for her outstanding teaching of citizenship in grade eight. She retired from teaching in 1970 and then spent many winters at Winter Haven, Pharr, TX.
Pyrl was a member of the United Methodist Church of Redfield and was a past member of the United Methodist Church of Leola, a charter member of the Homemakers Extension Club and a member of Disco Club. They moved to Redfield in 1987. There she belonged to the Retired Teachers and Eastern Star of Tulare.
Grateful for having shared Pyrl’s life are her sons, Monte (Joycel) Goodrich and Howard Goodrich, of Aberdeen; two grandsons, Darrel (Julie) of Mina; and Gray of Austin, TX.
She is preceded in death by her husband in 1989, parents, three sisters and two brothers.
JAYDEN ALEXANDER MCPARTLAND
Jayden Alexander McPartland, 23 months, went to be with his Savior on Sunday, August 9th, 2009. After a tragic swimming pool accident on August 7th, 2009, Jayden was rushed to the Brownwood Hospital and later transported via helicopter to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas where he was placed on life support. His father Spc. Daniel McPartland was serving with the Army National Guard in Kuwait and was notified through the Red Cross. Daniel arrived in Texas the morning of the ninth. After several tests confirmed that Jayden lacked any brain activity, the family said goodbye to him and donated his organs to pass Jayden’s life on to others.
A memorial service and viewing to honor Jayden is from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 17, at the Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home at 1111 South Main Street in Aberdeen. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, August 18th at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Aberdeen located at 1500 East Melgaard Road with Pastor Bill Duncan officiating. Burial will follow the ceremony at the Sunset Memorial Gardens on East Highway 12.
Born on August, 22nd, 2007, Jayden led an energetic life and will be dearly remembered. His infectious giggle and inquisitive nature brought joy and wonder into this world. Like all children, he loved chocolate and candy. He adored his four-year-old sister Sierra and loved playing with his dog Chipper. Always a go-getter, Jayden’s independent spirit shone in everything he did. Whether it was buzzing his remote control bulldozer around, climbing stairs, riding his bike, or cruising in his play car with his sister, he wanted to prove he could do things on his own. This stubbornness came in handy as he transformed himself from a crawler into a finely coordinated toddler who could run better than most could walk at his age. His zeal for life will be deeply missed.
Jayden is survived by his loving parents Daniel and Sandy McPartland; adoring sister Sierra; affectionate grandparents Shirley and Ed Coleman, Betty and Roy Stevicks, Grant and Anne McPartland, and Curt Krueger; devoted uncles and aunts John and Lorie Raschke, Glorie Stevicks, Brett and Tammy Oliver, Roy Stevicks, Ray and Mary Stevicks, Ted and Micah Stevicks, Charles and Mary Hosford, Lee Stevicks, Anne Stevicks, Chad and Brenda Stapp, Michael Krueger; 22 adoring cousins; and two admiring great-cousins.
Jayden is preceded in death by his great-grandmother Doloris Schmidt, great-grandfather George Schmidt, great-grandfather Ross Massingale, great-grandfather Holace Krueger, great-grandfather Florian “Mac” McPartland, great-aunt Gloria Connot, infant great-aunt Sharon Stevicks, uncle Christopher Krueger, and infant cousin Rhadd Oliver.
Honoring Jayden through their service as pallbearers are his uncles Roy, Ray, Ted, and Lee Stevicks; Michael Krueger; and close friend of the family, Reid Johnson. With their love and support behind the entire family, the 1st Battalion of the 147th Field Artillery of the South Dakota Army National Guard proudly serves as honorary pallbearers.

JUDE MICHAEL BORGESEN
The funeral service for Jude Michael Borgesen, 70, of Aberdeen, will be 11:30am, Thursday, August 13, 2009 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, with Pastor Jill Warner officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Aberdeen. Jude died Sunday, August 9, 2009 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 9am until time of service at the funeral home on Thursday.
Jude Michael Borgesen was born on October 30, 1938 at Aberdeen, SD to Paul and Agnes (Weig) Borgesen. This is where he grew up and attended school. Jude graduated from Central High School with the class of 1956. He went to Northern State College and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music and English in 1960. Jude then received his Master’s Degree in English in 1970. He taught school in Hitchcock, Andover, and Claremont. After teaching school, he started to teach music on his own. In 1980, Jude went to work at St. Luke’s Hospital in the Emergency Room part-time.
Jude was a member of Plymouth Congregational U.C.C., Aberdeen. He was also a member of American Diabetes Association, National Guild of Piano Teacher’s, American Guild of Organists, Aberdeen Area Music Teachers Association and Board of Director of United Ministries of Higher Education of Northern State College. Jude was published in the Who’s Who in Music Publication.
Grateful for having shared Jude’s life are his brother, Paul (Patsy) Borgesen of Glendale, AZ, nine nieces and nephews and many great nieces and great nephews.
Jude was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Agnes and his sister Priscilla Sanders.
