MARY MOHR
Mass of Christian burial for Mary Mohr, 102, Renton, WA, will be 10:30am, Friday, April 24, 2009 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hoven, SD, with Father Lance Oser, Celebrant. Burial is at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery. Mary died Wednesday, February 18 at Valley Medical Center in Renton.
Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
HELEN FRY
The service for Helen Fry, 78, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Inurnment will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Helen died Monday, April 13, at Lisbon Area Health Services, Lisbon, ND.
A time of signing the register book will be from 1-5pm, Friday, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St, with a prayer service at 7pm, at the church.
Helen Evangeline Williams was born May 9, 1930 to Hilman O. and Evelyn Williams in Webster SD. She grew up in rural Webster as the oldest of 8 children. She was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church and graduated from Webster High School in 1948. Helen attended Presentation School of Nursing, fulfilling the dream of being a Registered Nurse—a dream that was realized because of a scholarship provided by the Aberdeen Jr. Chamber of Commerce. Helen graduated from Presentation in 1951 and began her lifelong career. She met William Fry while attending school, they were married in 1951. She began her career working at Redfield Hospital, followed by St. Luke’s Hospital. She retired officially from Avera St. Luke’s in 1995, but worked on call until Dec 2000. She loved being a nurse and encouraged many others to pursue a nursing education, which many of her family have and are doing—sister, brother, daughters and now grandchildren. Her kitchen table was a gathering place for all, coffee, counseling or just conversation were always available. Helen could create a meal from thin air—no one was allowed to leave hungry. She was hardworking, conscientious, graceful, frugal, caring and wise. She loved to shop, especially for clothing and was a very classy dresser. She was always busy and loved to be organized. Helen always had advice ready to share or an important article she clipped for her loved ones. She cared deeply for the welfare of her family and always bestowed wisdom when appropriate. She had a good sense about people—their thoughts and their feelings. She felt blessed to be a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Aberdeen.

Grandchildren: Steven (Kristi) Fry, Kelly (Ken) Nysether, Erin (Ryan) Molitor, Megan Fry, Lori (Nathan) Oban, Jamie (Sarah) Fry, Shane (Jacy) Fry, Austin Fry, Joe Fry, Jessica Rozell, Karmin (Ian) Landry, Brandon (Renata) Fry, Cody Miller, Jennifer Reich, Alex Reich, Alycia Barr, Blake Mallett, Great Grandchildren: Mikaelyn, Ashlyn and Kaden Fry, Arianna Reich, Mason and Ava Nysether and Eloise Fry.
Preceeded into heaven by her parents, sisters, brothers, a stillborn child and a grandson.
INEZ T. WOLTER
Inez T. Wolter, 102, of Aberdeen, died Sunday, April 12, 2009 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen.

REVEREND SAM E. GRAF
Rev. Samuel E. Graf, 87, was born September 1, 1921, in Napoleon, ND to Edward and Katherina Graf. He passed away Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009 in Aberdeen, SD. He grew up in Napoleon, ND and graduated from Jamestown College. While a student in college he served two area churches. Upon graduation he attended Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, IL and graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1947.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm, Thursday, April 16 at First United Methodist church in Aberdeen with Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Burial at Riverside Memorial Park.
Visitation: 1-7 pm, Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.
He married Eilene Leischner in July of 1946 and together they served churches in Streeter, ND; Aberdeen, SD; Milbank, SD; and Bismarck, ND. Rev. Graf was active in conference committees: Conference Board of Trustees, Big Stone Camp, Conference Board of Ministry, and Conference Committee on Finance and Administration. He served as an Evangelist in churches throughout North and South Dakota and Canada.
After his retirement he served churches in Sterling and Moffit, ND, and was a supply pastor in area churches. The Grafs enjoyed traveling during retirement and continued living in Bismarck, ND before moving to Aberdeen in 1999.
Sam had a love of the arts, especially band music and playing his trumpet. He enjoyed relaxing by painting, making pottery, gardening, traveling, hunting, and fishing. He loved his family and cherished watching his sons and grandchildren in whatever they were involved in. His most important thing in life was passing on his faith in Christ and the importance of each person’s relationship to Him.
Although his family will miss him dearly, they cherish his legacy of concern for others and their faith in Christ.
Sam is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.
He is survived by his loving wife Eilene; three sons, Dave (René) of Aberdeen, Steve (Grace) of Aberdeen, and Tim (Jean) of Wilmot; ten grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the First United Methodist Church.
MARTHA C. ELSING
The funeral service for Martha C. Elsing, 103, Aberdeen, formerly of rural Mansfield, will be 2:00pm Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Mansfield, with Pastor Wesley Hafner officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Martha died Friday, April 10, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.
Visitation is from 1-7pm Tuesday, April 14, with family present from 6-7pm and a prayer service at 7pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.
Martha Elsing was born August 12, 1905, to Fred C. & Minnie (Toennies) Wiedebush at rural Mansfield, SD. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. On June 1, 1927, Martha married Fred H. Elsing at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Mansfield
She was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she played the organ for thirty-five years and was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Ladies Aide. Martha lived out her faith and was a humble servant. She was enjoyed by the congregation. She was an avid quilter and made many quilts for her family, friends and World Relief. Martha loved baking and gardening.
Grateful for having shared Martha’s life are her son, Ralph (Rosemary) Elsing, Scottsboro, AL; grandson, Ralph J. (Arlye) Elsing, Siren, WI; granddaughter, Rita Strugala, St. Marys, GA; and brother, Edwin (Irma) Wiedebush.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Selma Mogck, Ann Hagman, brothers, Fred Wiedebush, Carl Wiedebush, one step-brother, and six step-sisters.
MARCELLA ‘SALLY’ COATS
The funeral service for Marcella ‘Sally’ Coats, 85, of Aberdeen, SD, will be Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen with Pastor Gary Wileman officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Sally died Saturday, April 11, 2009 at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Monday, April 13, with family present from 5-7pm, at the funeral home.
Marcella Jackson was born on January 28, 1924 to Ray and Ethel (Evans) Jackson at Pollock, SD. This is where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Pollock High School with the class of 1942. Marcella ‘Sally’ then attended Northern Normal where she received her teaching certificate. Sally taught school for several years.
On May 20, 1950 she married Donald Coats at Mitchell, SD. They made their home in Mitchell until 1965 when they moved to Aberdeen. Donald died on January 17, 1980 and Sally continued to make Aberdeen her home.
Sally was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Aberdeen. She loved her church family and lived out her faith. Sally touched many lives with her gentle and caring ways.
Grateful for having shared Sally’s life are her three sons: Elon (Karen) Coats, of Miridian MS, Paul (Brenda) Coats, of Rapid City, SD, and Alan (Alysen) Coats, of Marion, IA; three daughters: Donna Bader, of Aberdeen, Janice (Joe) Silvestri, of UAE, and Carin Coats, of Aberdeen; eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Ethel, her husband, Donald, and one brother, Samuel Jackson.
RUBY RUTH GOEHRING
The funeral service for Ruby Ruth Goehring, 82, Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Plymouth Congregational UCC, with Pastor Jill Warner officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Ruby died Friday, April 10, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 4-6:30pm, Monday, April 13, with a prayer service at 6:30pm, at Plymouth Congregational UCC.
Ruby Quaschnick was born October 8, 1926 at Campbell County, SD to Edward & Rose (Bickel) Quaschnick. She attended the Bickel country school, near Herreid, SD and then attended Herreid High School.
On February 27, 1944, Ruby married Ervin Goehring at Eureka, SD. They made their home on a farm northwest of Herreid and a year later moved to a farm southwest of Herreid. In 1951 they moved to a farm northeast of Java, SD where they raised their family. Ruby enjoyed being involved with her sewing and quilting groups, which were held at her home with family and friends.
Ruby was a member of Sutley Congregational Church which later became the Java Congregational Church. After moving to Selby in 1972, she became a member at Selby UCC. There she cleaned at the Post Office and homes for others. Ruby and Ervin also owned and operated the Hilltop Motel in Selby. For a short time, Ruby sold Neo-Life. Ruby did a great job at embroidering and fixing hair. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and canning. Ruby also loved watching all children play.
In April 2003, Ruby and Ervin moved to Aberdeen where they enjoyed their retirement. They were members of Plymouth Congregational UCC. Ervin passed away in November, 2003. Ruby moved to Bethesda in April of 2005, where she enjoyed playing bingo, playing cards and all of the activities. She lived at Bethesda until she reached her Heavenly home.
Grateful for having shared Ruby’s life are four sons, Bruce (Peggy) Goehring, Aberdeen, Ervin (Roberta) Goehring Jr., Sioux Falls, Thomas (Barbara) Goehring, Mina, Larew (Mary) Goehring, Aberdeen, two daughters, Janet Newell, Sioux Falls, Becky (Mark) Stiegelmeier, Selby, eighteen grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren, brother, Gordon Quaschnick, and sister, Bernice (Edwin) Goehring.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Rose, her husband, Ervin, sister, Irene Walker, and brother, Walter Quaschnick.
Honorary casket bearers will be all of Ruby’s grandchildren and great grandchildren. Casket bearers will be her grandsons: Kevin Goehring, Chad Goehring, Paul Goehring, Chad Newell, Nick Goehring, and Levi Stiegelmeier.

WALTER "PETE" KALT
The funeral service for Walter “Pete” Kalt, 93, formerly of Mina, is 10:00am, Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church, Warner, with Rev. Joanne Nagele officiating. Burial will follow at Warner Township Cemetery. Walter died Thursday, April 9, at Golden Living Center in Ipswich.
Visitation is from 1-7pm, with family present from 5-7pm and a prayer service at 7pm, Monday, April 13, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.
Walter Paul Kalt was born on February 18, 1916 to Fred and Minnie (Dunker) Kalt at Webster, ND. As a young child, his family moved to the Stratford, SD area for a short time. They then moved to the Warner area, where he attended country school and later high school in Warner.
Walter married Irene Gange on June 2, 1943 at her family’s home in Duxbury, SD. In 1949 they moved to Edmunds County, Richland Township. Walter farmed and had a Grade A Dairy. He worked with the North Dakota Soil Conservation Board and became interested in Garrison Creeping Foxtail Grass which is a wetland hay desired by cattlemen. Walter introduced it to South Dakota and won a purple ribbon and plaque at the SD State Fair. He was on the school board at the time they built a new Richland Township country school. In August of 2005, Walter moved to the Golden Living Center, Ipswich.
Walter and his brother Marvin were the oldest living baptized members of St. John Lutheran Church, Warner. He enjoyed reading westerns and especially enjoyed Louis L’Amour Books. Walter loved spending time with his family and truly loved being with his grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of over 65 years, Irene of Mina, two daughters, Karen (Duane) Fink of Leola, SD, Janice (Denny) Weiss of Yankton, two sons, Dean (Vonnie) Kalt of Castlewood, SD and Daryl Kalt of Mina, one brother Marvin (Merry) Kalt of Aberdeen, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alfred & Erwin Kalt, one sister Irene Pryga, and great granddaughter Anne Maguire.
RICHARD GREBNER
The funeral service for Richard Grebner, 65, Aberdeen will be 1:00pm, Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Eldon Reich officiating. Burial will follow the lunch at Riverside Cemetery. Richard died Sunday at his home.
Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Tuesday with family present from 5-7pm at First United Methodist Church.
Richard was born April 4th, 1944 to Warren and Ferne Grebner in Webster South Dakota.
He spent the first 18 months of his life with his mother on her parents’ farm near Webster while his father served as Marine in the South Pacific.
Richard married Darlene on December 18, 1965 at First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen.
Richard started with the first of many entrepreneurial ventures at age six. He sold garden seeds and Christmas cards ordered from comic books door-to-door to neighbors. Richard’s desire to work and love of business took him through many jobs, including time stocking and bagging groceries, helping in construction and masonry, hauling bales, unloading train cars, bell hopping, selling pots and pans and eventually TV advertising. In 1967 Richard joined S.C. Johnson & Sons, Inc. as a sales representative for a three state area. After 19 successful years Richard left S.C. Johnson and worked in property development and management until he joined Gerharter Realtors as a realtor in 1987. In 1988 Richard purchased Gerharter Realtors with Darlene.
Steadfast in his commitment to help others, Richard devoted one day a week to community projects. One of three founding members of Homes Are Possible Incorporated (HAPI homes), Richard had a passion for helping people find ways to own their own homes. HAPI initially helped establish a down payment assistance program and later became involved with developing property suited for building and siting homes designed to meet the needs and means of Aberdeen’s working families. HAPI homes currently has 166 houses and continues to expand. To date, HAPI homes has been involved in $2.2 million in grants to 550 families. In 2005 Richard received the prestigious Friend of Housing Award from the South Dakota Housing and Development Association for “tremendous contributions to bettering the lives of residents in his area.”
Beyond real estate Richard stayed active in Boy Scouts having attained the rank of Eagle Scout as a teenager. He served as a member of the Eagle Scout Board of review since 1998. He enjoyed reading to increase his knowledge of the world, fishing, hunting, shooting, kayaking, snorkeling, exercising, dirt biking, spending time with his dog Bell, and especially enjoying time with his family at their lake cabin. Richard enjoyed all the moments of the day, making those around him feel his joy in life, often with a well timed practical joke.
In October of 1978, working as a traveling salesman, alone in a motel room, Richard had a life changing moment and accepted Christ.
Focused and successful as a businessman Richard made his family a priority and always took time for his children and grandchildren. Richard had a special way of relating to his family; finding a way to make each one feel like his best friend.
Travelling extensively with his beautiful sweetheart Darlene, they roamed the globe from North Pole to South Pole.
Richard is preceded in Death by his mother Ferne Grebner and survived by spouse Darlene, father Warren, brother Doug (Dee), four children Scott (Sandy) Grebner, Kami (Eric) Kline, Jason (Heather) Grebner, John Grebner and ten grandchildren, Adam, Hope, Dan, Jacob, Matt, Lydia, Lillian, Michael, Hannah, Joseph.
Funeral arrangements are through the Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home in Aberdeen.
