Donald Lorine Josephson, 79, Fort Meade, died Monday, February 2, 2009 at the Fort Meade VA Hospital.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, February 5, 2009 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Moe Greiner officiating. Burial with military honors by the Belle Fourche Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Donald was born May 22, 1929 at Buffalo, SD, to Jalmer "Prince" and Evelyn (Hilton) Josephson.
He attended country school at Cave Hills before returning home to work for neighboring ranches. He enlisted in the US Army at the age of 17. After his honorable discharge he enlisted in the US Air Force.
He returned to Buffalo where he met Benita Bye. They were married in Miles City, MT on February 28, 1955.
Don worked for area ranches around Buffalo. He also worked construction for the Titan and Minuteman missiles. After moving to Sioux Falls he continued to work construction until he started driving for a local cab company. Don moved to Black Hawk where he married Betty Fairbrush. They moved to Seattle and Don returned to the Black Hills after Betty's death.
Survivors include his daughter Evelyn Horner, Belle Fourche; sisters, Rose Schar, Belle Fourche, Joyce Jones, Niles, MI, Verla Hiekkila, Belle Fourche, Gloria Flin, Belle Fourche, Shirley Peterson, Rapid City; also 3 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and several step children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and several brothers in law.
Emma M. Walters

Emma M. Walters, 86, Sturgis, passed away Monday, February 2, 2009, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
Emma was born July 23, 1922, in McIntosh, SD, to George and Julia (Kastosh) Melvin. She grew up and attended school in McIntosh and later moved, as a teenager, to Watertown, SD. She met and later married Willis R. "Bill" Walters on April 3, 1940.
Together they worked and built a successful business, Tinkertown Treasure Shop, including the landmark, "The World's Largest Pheasant" on Hwy 212, 14 miles west of Watertown. After her husband's death in 1980, Emma ran the business for several more years, selling it in 1983 and moving to Watertown. She lived in Watertown until July 2006 when she moved to Sturgis to be near family.
She is survived by her sister, Mary "Babe" Traxel, Elgin, ND; three sons, Wayne (Margaret) Walters, Sheridan, WY, Dennis (Judy) Walters, Aurora, CO, and Curtis "Corky" (Karen) Walters, Sturgis; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, five sisters, and two brothers.
Emma will be cremated and will be taken back to her beloved Watertown for inurnment at a later date.

Jean Pittman

Jean Pittman, 85, Whitewood, died Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at his ranch near Whitewood.
Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. on Monday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Richard Counts officiating. Burial will follow at the Whitewood Cemetery.
Jean was born in a dugout near Sulphur Creek on January 30, 1924, to Charles E. and Jennie D. (Hlavka) Pittman. He attended grade school in Marcus and High School in Sturgis. He returned to the ranch at Marcus where he met Jeane Oliver. They were married in Sturgis on February 25, 1947.
In 1948, they moved to their ranch near Whitewood where they have lived for the past 60 years. Jean was employed as the foreman for the Whitewood Sawmill for 15 years. He then worked part-time for 3 years at the Sawmill where he sharpened saw blades. He also operated a Grade A Dairy for many years.
Jean was a member of numerous civic and fraternal organizations. He loved to dance and ride a good horse.
Survivors include his wife, Jeane Pittman, Whitewood; five sons, Martin Pittman, Whitewood, Monte Pittman, Whitewood, Melvin Pittman, Nisland, Mark Pittman, Dallas, TX, and Mike Pittman, Belle Fourche; one sister, Laura Ethel Howie, Rapid City; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established to the Whitewood Senior Citizens Center.
John Arthur Rucastle
October 8, 1921 - January 28, 2009

John A. Rucastle, 87, Spearfish and formerly of Whitewood, died Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at his residence in Spearfish.
Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 2, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood with Reverand David Baer officiating. Burial will be at the Whitewood Cemetery at a later date.
John was born October 8, 1921, at the family ranch northeast of Whitewood to John and Lillian (West) Rucastle. He farmed the home place until he was 38 and then moved to Minnesota where he farmed near Luverne for a year. John returned to South Dakota and worked at Pluma at the Post and Pole factory until a fire destroyed the business. He went to work for Homestake and spent six years on the crusher before transferring to the mechanical shop. John retired after 24 years.
John married Mary Seymour Lee in Sturgis on June 12, 1958. They lived in Whitewood for a total of 43 years before moving to Spearfish in 2000.
John was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood and the Whitewood and Spearfish Senior Citizens Centers.
He donated many years of volunteer labor to the Whitewood Cemetery. He also enjoyed woodworking in his spare time.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Rucastle, Spearfish; his children, Carol Gritts, Spearfish and her children, Brian (Gail), Jeromie, Carleton (Jessica), and Trevour; Donald (Donna) Lee, Sturgis and his children, James (Kelly), Todd (Heather), Robert (Venus), Shonna (Shannon), and Cheyenne (Brandon); Rose Lee, Eagle Butte, and her children, Nadine, Jordan, and Danielle; and Barbara Lee-Bachand, Sturgis; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother and four sisters.
Memorials have been established to the Whitewood and Spearfish Senior Citizens Centers, and the Spearfish Ambulance Service.
Virginia Catherine Schnell
September 12, 1922 - January 26, 2009

Virginia C. Schnell, 86, Arlington, TX, and formerly of Sturgis, died Monday, January 26, 2009, at the Methodist Mansfield Hospital at Mansfield, TX.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Friday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2009, at the First Wesleyan Church in Sturgis with Pastor Dwight Peterson officiating. Burial will be at the Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.
Virginia was born September 12, 1922, at Hastings, NE, to Henry C. and Katherine (Michael) Bauer.
Virginia worked as a nanny to a pharmacist and his wife before marrying Harry Schnell on December 8, 1940, in Harrisburg, NE. The couple moved to Portland, OR, during WWII to work in the shipyards. After one year, the family moved back to Nebraska for a short time before settling in Vale, SD. Harry and Virginia farmed in the Vale area for 55 years before retiring to Sturgis, SD, in 1999.
Virginia enjoyed gardening, playing the piano and visiting her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling and made trips to the Holy Land, Hawaii and Mexico with her family. Following Harry's death in 1999, Virginia spent her winters in Texas and her summers in South Dakota before moving to Texas permanently in 2007.
Survivors include her son, Harlan Schnell, Vale; daughters, June Angyal, Arlington, TX, Ilene Bertsch, Ashley, ND, and Anita Martin, Grand Prairie, TX; brothers, Richard Bauer, Scottsbluff, NE, and Herman Bauer, Alliance, NE; sisters, Alvina Lehl, Hemingford, NE, Elnora Huber, Scottsbluff, NE, and Hermina Meyer, Portland, OR; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, 6 sisters, one son, one daughter, and one grandson.

M. Theresa Berry

M. Theresa Berry, 77, Spearfish and formerly of Sturgis, died Sunday, January 25, 2009, at her residence in Spearfish.
Theresa was born July 5, 1931, in Sioux Falls, SD. She grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School. She attended community college before working at a supermarket and later working in a doctor's office. She met Dwaine Berry and they were married June 6, 1953, in Sioux Falls. Dwaine was accepted to medical school and they moved to Kirksville, MO. They moved to Sturgis where Theresa lived until moving to Spearfish in 2001.
Theresa worked at the bakery at Lynn's County Market and also for Banner Health in Spearfish. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and a member of the Altar Society. She was also a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and was very active with the hospital board.
Survivors include two sons, Ed Berry and Tom (Lisa) Berry, all of Spearfish; four grandchildren, Walker, April, Ashley, and Tim; one great-grandson, Walker; one brother, Larry Russell, Sioux Falls; and one sister, Connie (Dave) Landry, Sioux Falls.
She was preceded in death by her mother and her husband.
Visitation will be Wednesday from noon until 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Josephine Anna Rogers

Josephine Anna (Kari) Rogers, age 87, died at her home in Black Hawk, SD, on January 25, 2009.
She was born October 17, 1921, to Peter and Cathrine Kari and grew up in a sod house at the home ranch in Bixby, SD. Josephine was united in marriage to Lloyd A. Rogers on April 16, 1943, at Fairpoint, SD. They made their home at Bixby until 1951 when they moved to Belle Fourche where she worked at Eddie's Fifth Avenue Market and the new Safeway Store. In 1963, they moved to Deadwood where they owned and operated the Ranger Bar for ten years. They then returned to Belle Fourche.
Josephine spent several enjoyable years traveling with her husband when he was a truck driver for East-West Motor Express. She was a member of the Belle Fourche Altar Society until they moved to Black Hawk in 2003.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 64 years, Lloyd Rogers, Black Hawk; one son, Calvin Rogers, Kearney, NE; two daughters, Penny Schablitsky and Robin Hanson, both of Black Hawk; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five brothers; four sisters; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Josephine was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Barney Allen Rogers; one sister, Dorothy Kari; and her son-in-law, Paul Schablitsky.
Visitation will be Thursday from noon until 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, January 30, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Calvin Edward Schulz
November 8, 1930 - January 16, 2009

Calvin Edward Schulz, 78, Sturgis, died Friday, January 16, 2009 at the Lead Deadwood Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 23, 2009 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Reverend Michael Fox officiating. Burial follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.
Calvin was born November 8, 1930, near Elgin ND to Edward B. and Edith (Pitcher) Schulz. He attended school in Elgin, and lived and worked on the family farm. He served in the US Army from 1954 until 1956 after which he returned to the farm in North Dakota.
He married Darlene M. Mutschelknaus at Elgin, ND, on April 2, 1958.
They lived on the farm until 1960. They moved to Bismark, ND for a short time and then traveled to South Dakota where he began employment with the Homestake Gold Mine. Working for the Homestake Gold Mine; he worked for few years at Hauber Uranium Mine and in 1966 began work at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD.
In 1966 they moved to their home in Boulder Canyon; buying their first home in Sturgis in 1969 where Calvin continued his employment with Homestake Mine until his retirement in 1992.
He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #33, and he enjoyed square dancing and Bible study at the Grace Lutheran Church. He was an active grandfather participating in camping trips with his grandchildren and enjoyed a competitive game of Aggravation.
Survivors include his wife Darlene, Sturgis; two sons, Terry Schulz, Rapid City, Todd (Sandy) Schulz, Harrisburg, SD; one daughter, Tammy Iverson, Sturgis; three brothers, Gordon Schulz and Frances, Itasca, Illinois, Donald (Etta) Schulz, Des Moines, IA, Lyle (Lois) Schulz, Madison, WI; one sister, Lois (Eddie) Hochhalter, Elgin, ND; five grandchildren, Amanda, Mariah, Josiah Schulz, Alexis and David Iverson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Mary Ann.

Cecelia Ann Schwartz
December 29, 1916 - February 19, 2009

Cecelia Ann (Brekenfeld) Schwartz, 92, went home to be with Jesus Thursday, February 19, 2009, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care surrounded by her family.
Visitation will be Monday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and will resume on Tuesday, one hour prior to the services at Grace Lutheran Church.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Michael J. Fox officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Cecelia was born December 29, 1916, at Burke, SD, to John and Wilhelmina (Voss) Brekenfeld. Cecelia attended country school near Burke until the Spring of 1929, when she moved with her parents to a farm near Newell, SD. She attended grade school and high school in Newell and graduated in May 1934. After high school, she attended Green's Beauty School in Rapid City, SD, and graduated with a degree in cosmetology in 1937. Cecelia opened a beauty shop in Newell where she met and married Charles Schwartz on May 4, 1941. Charles was drafted into the army ten months later, during WWII, and spent the next three years overseas. When he returned, they lived first in Newell, where both of their sons were born, and in 1958 they moved to Sturgis, SD, where Cecelia opened a beauty shop in her home. Her cosmetology career spanned over fifty-six years until she retired in 1993.
Cecelia loved music. She sang for many weddings and funerals and was a member of the church choir at the First Lutheran Church in Newell and later at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis. She was also active in church circles, Ladies Aid, quilting, and the annual church motorcycle breakfast. She was a Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member for sixty years. Cecelia was a soloist for many events at the Newell and Sturgis Lodges. Her faith, her incredible love affair with her husband, Charles, family, friends, flowers, and music were Cecelia's strength and joy. She was dignified and classy and still had a wonderful sense of humor and such a beautiful smile.
Survivors include her two sons and their wives, Lowell and Debbie Schwartz and Bill and Rita Schwartz, all of Sturgis; five grandchildren, Breawna and Jason Nylen, Alesha Schwartz, Seth Schwartz, Michael Schwartz, and Clark Schwartz; and two great-grandchildren, Isaiah Nylen and Kendrick Schwartz.
Her parents, husband, Charles, four brothers, and five sisters preceded her in death.
Memorials have been established to Grace Lutheran Church and the Sturgis Senior Citizens Center.
