William H. Wyatt
S. BOSTON, Va. -- William Harrison Wyatt, 71, husband of Louise Lloyd Wyatt, died Friday, November 11, 2001, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 10, 1930, in Danville, Va., he was the son of the late Emmett Jackson Wyatt and Bessie Elliott Wyatt. He was a retired automobile dealer, a member of The Presbyterian Church of Manning, a former member of the S. Boston Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Halifax County Regional Hospital Board and School Board. He was also a former member and Deacon of First Baptist Church in S. Boston, Va., and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors besides his wife of Manning include a son, Michael Lloyd Wyatt of Columbia; a daughter, Ann Harrison Wyatt of Manning; a brother, the Rev. Dr. Robert P. Wyatt of Emporia; three sisters, Ruth W. Farley of Woodbury, N.J., Edith W. Smith of Brooksville, Fla., and Betty W. Grant of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Daniel Humphrey, Emily Allen and Elizabeth Allen.
Services were 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with Dr. William J. Holmes officiating. Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Essie M. Ham
Essie McKenzie Ham, 70, widow of Eugene “Punch” Ham, died Tuesday, November 20, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born May 2, 1931, in New Zion, she was the daughter of the late Ezekiel McKenzie and Oliva Rose McKenzie. She attended Howard Chapel School in Clarendon County. In her youth, she joined Howard Chapel AME Church, where she was a member of the Missionary Society.
Survivors include three sons, Nathaniel Ham, Alfred Ham and Izell Ham of New Zion; two daughters, Lillie Rhodes and Janie McFadden of New Zion; a brother, George “Buddy” McKenzie of Gable; four sisters, Ella Mae Brown of New Zion, Lillie Bell Brown of San Diego, Calif., Sadie Ceasar of Manning and Shellie McKenzie of Gable; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Roland, David, Isaiah, Paul and John Lee McKenzie; and a sister, Ada Ervin.
Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Howard Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, officiating and the Revs. Eddie Mayes, Lucious Wheeler and Evangelist Willie Mae Williams assisting.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Martha Z. Hutchinson
Martha Zalesky “Peggy” Hutchinson, 78, wife of Horace H. Hutchinson, died Friday, November 23, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 25, 1922, in Lynch, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Catherine Sabo Zalesky. She was a retired beautician and a member of Lake Marion Baptist Church.
Survivors besides her husband of Summerton include a daughter, Lois Debbie Hutchinson of Summerton; a son, Thomas E. Hutchinson of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a sister, Margie Drosick of Pocahontas, Va.
She was preceded in death by two sons, John Wesley Carney and Lloyd E. Carney.
Services were 2 a.m. Tuesday at Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Tompkins officiating.
Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.
Marian L. Mendiola
Marian Lowder Mendiola, 76, died Friday, November 23, 2001, at Hopewell Nursing Home.
Born July 4, 1925, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Newton Lowder and Martha Mathis Lowder. She was a retired nurse and was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Mendiola of Manning; a daughter, Wylie Gillespie of Gilbert, Ariz.; a sister, Ruby L. Chandler of Sumter; four grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, S.P. Holladay and J.W. “Billy” Holladay; and two sisters, Katherine Heaton and Irene Skinner.
There was a private service.
Mattie Rivers
Mattie “Biggie” Rivers, 54, died Sunday, November 18, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born May 24, 1947, in the St. Paul community of Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Esau and Esther Caldwell Rivers. She was a 1966 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. She was a member of the Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church, where she was a member of the choir. She was employed with Federal Mogul in Summerton from 1978 until her health failed.
Survivors include a son, James “Biggie” Croslen Jr. of Columbia; two daughters, Regina Brunson and Yolineda Lawson of Summerton; a brother, Henry Rivers of Summerton; three sisters, Hattie Williams of the home, Mamie Jefferson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mary Waller of District Heights, Md.; and five grandchildren.
Services were 2 p.m. Friday at Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. Warren Hatcher officiating and the Revs. Malachi Duncan, Amos Hatcher, Alfonzo Waller and pastor O’Celia Blue assisting.
Burial followed in Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church Cemetery.
Charlie E. Spry
Charlie Edward Spry, 72, died Wednesday, November 14, 2001, at Hopewell Health Care Center.
Born July 9, 1929, in Pinewood, he was the son of the late Jack and Beatice Spry. He was raised by the late George and Anna Spry. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was employed as a chauffeur with Adam’s Packing Co. in Auburndale, Fla., for many years. He returned to South Carolina in 1987 and lived several years at Dorch’s Community Care Facility in Manning.
Survivors include six sisters, Mary Crawford, Gladys Sinkler and Luevenia Spry of Sumter, Sarah Spry of Summerton, and the Rev. Sister Rosa Conyers and Magnolia Story of Manning; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Freddie Lee Spry.
Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Sinai Fire Baptized Holiness Church with the Revs. Willie E. Davis, Marvin Conyers, O’Donald Dingle and Sister Etherleen Bethune officiating.
Burial followed in Muldrow Cemetery.
Marguerite H. Stafford
Marguerite Hard Stafford, 87, wife of Lawrence M. Stafford, died Monday, November 19, 2001, at her home in Mt. Plymouth, Fla.
Born Jan. 15, 1914, in Charleston, she was the daughter of the late Harry Craig Hard Sr. and Celia Poston Hard. She was retired senior loan officer with Ag-First Farm Credit Bureau and was of the Episcopal faith.
Survivors besides her husband include a daughter, Margo Stafford Justice of Mt. Plymouth, Fla.; a brother, Charles F. Hard of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a granddaughter, Marceia Egler of Orlando, Fla.; and special friends Jeff Durichek, Janet Hoover, John Loomis and Susan Morelli.
Services were 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Mendle Baker officiating.
Burial followed in Wilson Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Gertrude K. Wimberly
Gertrude Kirby Wimberly, 78, of Effingham, wife of Jack L. Wimberly, died Friday, November 16, 2001, at a Florence hospital after an illness.
Born in Lake City, she was the daughter of the late Harold Levern and Martha Hannah G. Gray. She was a member of the Woodmen of the World, the Evergreen Grange, Lebannon Free Will Baptist Church and the adult Sunday school class.
Survivors besides her husband of Effingham include a son, Lowell Thomas Kirby and his wife, Robin, of Manning; a daughter, Joyce M. Walker and her husband, Cy, of Loris; a sister, Bessie Mae Canty of Darlington; four grandchildren, Lynnette Rion of Surfside Beach, Jeffery Kirby of Effingham, Joy Bocks of Florence and Jody Muldrow of Effingham; two stepchildren, Jack L. Wimberly Jr. of Hickory, N.C., and Terry W. Tripp of Chapel Hill, N.C.; four great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Eddie Lowell Kirby, who died in 1976.
Services were 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Burial followed in Lebannon Cemetery.
Ellen W. Bristol
Ellen “Singer” Wilson Bristol, 66, widow of Lloyd A. Bristol, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at her home.
Born March 26, 1935, in the Biggers community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Fannie Fleming Wilson. An aunt, Lillian Stewart, helped raise her. She attended schools in Clarendon County and New York City. She received an associate’s degree in nursing at a New York college. She attended St. John Fire Baptized Holiness Church in New York and Mt. Calvary FBH Church in Manning. She later returned to Biggers AME Church.
Survivors include two sons, Lloyd “B.J.” Bristol Jr. and Lovell Rashard Bristol of Manning; a daughter, Breshia Bristol of Manning; a brother, Robert Wilson Jr. of Fort Pierce, Fla.; three nephews she raised as her own, Wallce Burgess, Donald Burgess and Stanley Price; two nieces she raised as her own, Emma Lee Mack and Anne Jones; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lovell Bristol; two brothers, Robert and George Wilson; and a sister, Anna W. Burgess.
Services were 2 p.m. Friday at Biggers AME Church with the Rev. Francis Gathers, pastor, and Bishop Charles W. Williams officiating, and the Revs. Jerome McCray, Mattie Mouzon, James S. Mourice and Evangelist Rose Price assisting. Burial followed in the family cemetery.

Bill Rogers
Bill Rogers, 75, of Manning died Sunday, July 8, 2001, after an illness.
Born in Chesterfield County, he was the son of the late Joseph O. Rogers Sr. and Lila McDonald Rogers.
Mr. Rogers, formerly of Charleston, was a retired finance company executive. He was also the owner and operator of W. R. Marine Construction Company in Santee, a U.S. Navy veteran and attended Appalachian State College and the Citadel. He was a member of Manning United Methodist Church, where he was past president of the Men’s Bible Class.
Survivors include his children, Bill Sherrard, Karen (Greg) Croft, Kathi (Gary) Hall, Robin Rogers, Michael Dale Rogers, and Mark Anthony Rogers.
Graveside services were 1 p.m. Saturday in Manning Cemetery with the Revs. Ron Petit and Tim Rogers officiating.

Joyce G. Scott
Joyce Griffin Scott, 72, wife of John A. Scott, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born Feb. 7, 1929, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Ervin Theodore Griffin and Marie Wells Griffin. She was a retired secretary and a member of Summerton United Methodist Church.
Survivors besides her husband of Summerton include a son, John A. “Lex” Scott Jr. of Lexington; a daughter, Jonolyn Whiteside of Charleston; five sisters, Mary G. Silver, Virginia G. Ardis, Kenny G. Avin of Summerton, Jean Bell of Santee and Lynn G. Watkins of Laurens; four grandchildren, Frank and Morgan Whiteside and Rebecca and John A. Scott III.
Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday at Summerton United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers.
