David Sawtelle
HODGES — David Allen Sawtelle, 51, of 107 Glen Forest Drive, husband of Carolina Bradley Sawtelle, died Sunday, July 13, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Wyandotte, Mich., he was a son of the late Frederick Joseph and Muriel Emery Sawtelle. He was a graduate of Naples High School, Naples, Fla. and Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. He served as Youth and Music Director for several Baptist churches and was presently part-time music minister at Hyde Park Baptist Church in Greenwood. He retired in February 2003 as general manager of Dalton Carpets in Clinton. He was a member of Hyde Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, John Sawtelle of Estero, Fla., Robert Sawtelle of Greenville, S.C. and James Sawtelle of Bonneau, S.C.; two sisters, Linda Liles and Carolyn Storer, both of Bonita Springs, Fla. and three grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blyth Funeral Home conducted by the Revs. Tommy Thurston and Darrel Rooks.
Visitation is 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the home.

Bernice C. Davis
Bernice C. Davis, 85, of 134 Brentwood Drive, widow of Burl Davis Sr., died Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Tennessee, she was a daughter of the late Hobert and Leoria Ford Cagle. She attended Ninety Six Church of God.
Survivors include four sons, Curtis Davis of Alvin, Texas , Carroll Davis of Spartanburg, Jerry Davis and Burl Davis Jr., both of Greenwood; a sister, Frankie Green of Newport, Tenn.; two brothers, Wayne Cagle and Lawrence Cagle, both of Detroit; 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Wilton Scruggs. Burial is in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are Kenneth Conyers, Reid Wightman, Eugene Green, Robbie Brannen, Jody Davis, Winston Cook and Justin Pennington.
Honorary escorts are Suzette Ramos, Angie Davis, Tracy Toney, Stacy Brannen, Shanna Barnette and Angie Chambers.

Emma Kate Oxner Davis
CROSS HILL — Emma Kate Oxner Davis, age 80, of 1393 Whiteford Rd. died Tuesday, July 15th in the Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
She was born in Joanna and was a daughter of the late Boyce and Mary Gordon Oxner.
Mrs. Davis was retired from the Vogue, owned by the late Harry and Sadie Berlin, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cross Hill.
She is survived by her husband, John C. Davis of the home; a daughter, Vivian D. Grice and husband, Charles of Aiken; a brother, Pope Oxner and wife, Jackie of Joanna; a sister, Hilda Montjoy and husband, Rudy of Simpsonville; a granddaughter, Kate O’Neal Grice of Aiken; and a great-grandchild, Zoë Grace Hough of Aiken; a sister-in-law and lifelong friend, Constance S. Davis of Cross Hill; a special niece, Debbie Alexander of Cross Hill and several other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon Oxner.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Cross Hill with burial in Cross Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Gray Funeral Home in Clinton.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Fannie Green, 84, died Friday, July 11, 2003.
Born in Greenwood, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Cary and Moriah Mathis Green. She was a member of Pine Grove A.M.E. Church, Callison Highway, and attended St. Mark Missionary Church in Brooklyn.
Services are at 1 Saturday at Pine Grove A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Revs. James Bates Jr., DeQuincy Hentz and Gracie Smith. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are friends of the family.
Visitation is Friday evening at the home of a nephew, Thomas Morton, 619 Chipley Road, Greenwood.

Melissa Hite
Melissa Kay Matthews Hite, 31, of 413-A N. Main St., died Sunday, July 13, 2003 in Rochester, N.Y.
A native of Saluda, she was employed with Discovery Time in Johnston.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Gregory Hite of Saluda; two daughters, Lindsey Kay Hite and Dorothy Lee Anne Hite, both of the home; two sons, Devin Gregory Hite and Matthew Garland Hite, both of the home; her mother and stepfather, Cora Adams Shidle and Burl Shidle of Saluda; her father and stepmother, Harold “Mac” Matthews and Billie H. Matthews of Saluda; and two sisters, Anna N. Matthews of Saluda and Jennifer W. Brock of Fort Drum, N.Y.
Services are 11 a.m. today at Saluda Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Norman Rogers and Mike Hatfield. Burial is in Travis Park Cemetery.

James Henry Parker
TROY — James Henry Parker, 91, husband of Willie Mae Middleton Parker, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Augusta, Ga.
Born in Troy, he was a son of the late Whittie and Carrie Lou New Parker. He was a member of Troy Bethel A.M.E. Church, where he served on the Steward Board. An Army World War II veteran, he was a retired timber and produce farmer.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Johnny (Wylene) Patten of Troy; three foster sons, Robert Lee Parker of Washington , D.C., David Lane of Seneca and Odell Middleton of Philadelphia; four sisters, Mary Grace of Washington , D.C., Ethel Lee Wideman of New York City, Dorothy Byrd of Bowie, Md., and Julia Woodson of East Orange, N.J.; a brother, Ivan Parker of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five grandchildren.

Walter D. Pennington
HODGES — Walter D. Pennington, 84, of 116 Windmere Drive, husband of Lillian E. Morton Pennington, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003.
Born in Garten, W.Va., he was a son of the late Tom and Pearl Pennington. He was a retired coal miner and an Army World War II veteran. He was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife of the home; four sons, Walter Alvin Pennington and Danny M. Pennington, both of Waterloo, Paul D. Pennington of Baltimore and James Allen Pennington of Hodges; four daughters, Elizabeth A. Plumb of Blythe, Calif., Lou Ann Pridmore of Waterloo, Hazel Ruth Jordan of Hopewell, Va., and Nina Gail Harrison of Greenwood; a sister, Sylvia Castle of Oak Hill, W.Va.; 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the Greenwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Pearl Reames
NINETY SIX — Pearl Reames, 91, resident of 7507 Hwy 702, died July 16, 2003 at the home of her niece.
Born in Greenwood County, Dyson Community, March 27, 1912, she was a daughter of the late John Belton and Mary Ann Reames. She was a 1932 graduate of Ninety Six High School and retired as a Private Duty Nurse and sitter.
Ms. Reames was a member and former Sunday School Teacher of Ninety Six Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She is survived by a niece, Lois H. Medlock of Kirksey, four great nephews, one great niece, three great great nephews and one great great niece.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ben Edwards and Rev. George Hopkins officiating.
Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Melvin Foshee, Steve Brown, Roy Horne, Elliott Werts, Eddie Carter, Leonard Smith, Steven Carter, and Walter Leopard.

McCORMICK — Sue Doolittle Reynolds, 86, of Drennon Street, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
A native of Edgefield County, she was of the Baptist faith and was a retired inspector from Riegel Textile.
Survivors include five daughters, Betty Jean Thurmond and Carolyn Parks, both of Plum Branch, Maxine Gable, Joyce Faye Young and Barbara Ann Alverson, all of McCormick; a son, Larry Reynolds of McCormick; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Friday at Overbrook Cemetery in McCormick.

ABBEVILLE — William H. “Billo” Brown, 89, formerly of 1319 Watts Road, widower of Ruth McBride Brown, died Sunday, July 13, 2003 at National Health Care in Greenwood.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late Rosa Bell “Vance” Gray and stepson of Willie “Pat” Gray. He was reared in the home of his grandmother, Mary Jane Brown. An Army World War II veteran, he retired from J.P. Stevens and Calhoun Falls High School. He was a member of Shady Grove A.M.E. Church, where he served on the Trustee Board.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Samuel (Annie L.) Statom of Abbeville; two brothers, James Gray of Greenwood and James W. Williams of Atlanta.
Services are 12 p.m. Saturday at Shady Grove A.M.E. Church, Watts Road, conducted by the Rev. Robert Johnson. Burial is in the church cemetery.

WARE SHOALS — Carl R. “Yank” Fink, 67, of 350 Turkey Creek Road, husband of Betty Hamilton Smith Fink, died Monday, July 14, 2003.
Born in Allentown, Pa., he was a son of the late Charles Robert and Emily Gombert Fink. He retired from True Temper and was a veteran of the Air Force and a member of Anderson Moose Lodge No. 2190.
