Pearl Stroud James
GREENWOOD - Anne Pearl (Peggy) Stroud James, R.N., 96, died January 19, 2002, in Greenwood.
Born in the Pleasant Lane section of Edgefield County, Peggy Stroud James moved with her family in 1922 to Greenwood, where she lived for the rest of her life. The daughter of the late Franklin Asbury Stroud and Minnie Eugenia Darnell Stroud, she was married to the late Jack Albert Herman James of Greenwood for 59 years.
Mrs. James' career as a practicing Registered Nurse in Greenwood spanned four decades. She was graduated from Greenwood High School, attended the Greenwood Hospital School of Nursing and graduated with an R.N. degree in 1930.
Early in her nursing career, she assisted Dr. R. M. Fuller both in the office and on house calls throughout Greenwood County. During their house calls in the 1930's and early 1940's, this doctor-nurse team was called upon to deliver babies, set broken bones, and perform minor emergency surgery. Pearl (Peggy) James later applied her nursing skills at the Greenwood Hospital and also at Self Memorial Hospital where she assisted with the opening of the hospital and continued nursing there for many years. Throughout her long nursing career, she was commended for her healing presence, for her professional care, and for her commitment to her patients, many of whom referred to her as the "best nurse in Greenwood."
Mrs. James was also committed to the community of Greenwood and to her church. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church for 80 years. For many years, she was an active member of the Greenwood Business and Professional Women's Club, the Greenwood Nurses Club and the Lawton Sunday Schools Class at Main Street United Methodist Church. She also had an abiding interest in gardening. Like her patients, shrubbery and flowers thrived under her care, and, when she was in her late 80's, the Index-Journal ran a feature on her beautiful camellias, calling them "Pearl's Petals."
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy James and Theodore R. McClure, Jr.; her son and daughter-in-law, Jack Stroud and Karen Brown James; grandchildren, Whitney Anne James, Emily Brooke James, Benjamin Asbury James, Theodore R. McClure, III, and Mary Clara McClure Mooneyhan. A great-grandson, Clay McClure Mooneyhan, also survives her.
Services for Mrs. James will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 24, at Main Street United Methodist Church in Greenwood with burial at Edgewood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held immediately before the funeral, from 11:30 to 12:30, in the Church Social Hall. Harley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
