GREENWOOD - Emery Stephen ÒJimÓ Shenal, Sr., 82, of 108 Hill & Dale Drive, husband of Nell Clary Shenal, died Tuesday, January 08, 2002 at his home.
Born in Menallen, PA, he was a son of the late John S. and Anna Matte Shenal. He retired from Grendel Mill and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where he was sexton and lay minister for more than 50 years. He served in the US Army, Fourth Infantry Division, during World War II and was a recipient of Purple Hearts and the Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a member of the Order of St. Bernadette, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Columbia Post, Military Order of the Purple Heart and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and received personal blessings from Pope John Paul II during a trip to Rome on October 24, 2001.
Surviving is his wife of the home; a son, Emery Stephen Shenal, Jr. of Greenwood; a daughter, Anna Louise Irwin of Greenwood; a sister, Agnes Steinhauer of North Ridgefield, OH; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Richard D. Harris officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be the Knights of Columbus.
The family will receive friends at Harley Funeral Home tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with the Christian Wake Service being held at 7:30 p.m.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Ellen Evans Speed, 79, formerly of Abbeville, S.C., died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Jacksonville.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late James Gibert Evans and Nell Watson Evans. She was a member of South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church. Living in Jacksonville since 1956, she attended nursing school at Florida Community College, Jacksonville, and worked at St. Luke’s Hospital, River Garden Nursing Home and Eagle Crest Nursing Home. She was first married to the late Preston Brooks Speed III, and second to the late Samuel C. Hyken.
Survivors include two daughters, Janelle Siegel of McDonough, Ga., and Linda Hubbard of Tallahassee; a son, James Speed of Jacksonville; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville, conducted by the Rev. George Busch. Burial is in Lebanon Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Visitation is from 10-11 Friday at the funeral home.

Sarah Williams Belton
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Sarah Louvenia Williams Belton, 94, widow of Hudson Eugene Belton Sr., died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Hunter Woods Health Care in Charlotte.
Born in Abbeville, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Authur Williams and Willie McGowan Williams Klugh. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include seven daughters, Willie B. Jackson of Silver Spring, Md., Beuna B. Williams of Ninety Six, S.C., Sarah Shirley Belton of Brooklyn, N.Y., Gussie Ruth Leeth, Helen Carpentinrie and Eula Clark, all of Charlotte and Dorothy B. Spencer of Greenwood, S.C.; five sons, Hudson E. Belton Jr. of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Garfield Belton, David Belton, Robert Belton and Matthew Belton, all of Abbeville; 52 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Services are at 11 Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, with burial in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, both in Abbeville.
Visitation is from 7-8 tonight at Abbeville & White Mortuary, Abbeville.

GREENWOOD — Margaret Meader Gillespie Hayes, 74, widow Dale Hayes, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Morning Side Assisted Living.
Graveside services are Saturday in the Meader Family Cemetery, Summers County, W.Va.

GREENWOOD — Services for Jannie Lue Higgins, of 205 Siloam Church Road, are at 2 Sunday at Liberty Springs Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. GREENWOOD — Jesse Paschal McDowell Sr., 70, of 105 McDowell St., husband of Patsy Mitchell McDowell, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Self Regional Healthcare.
Born in the Shelton Community of Fairfield County, he was a son of the late Joseph S. and Eva Hancock McDowell. He retired in 1997 from Greenwood Supply Co. after 52 years of service. A member of Laurel Baptist Church, he was a member the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class, a greeter and a member of Greenwood Masonic Lodge No. 91 A.F.M.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Kathy M. Culbertson of Ninety Six; a son, Jesse P. McDowell Jr. of Hodges; a sister, Lona M. Taylor of Greenwood; a brother, William E. McDowell of Chester; and three granddaughters.
Services are at 1 today at Blyth Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Todd Johnson and the Rev. Darrell Rooks. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

HAINES CITY, Fla. — Thelma Simmons Price, 78, of 1813 Lowry Ave., widow of Marion Rufus Price, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Heart of Florida Hospital in Haines City.
Born in Greenwood County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Norris Grady and Nannie Mae King Simmons. She graduated from Greenwood High School and retired from Orange County Fruit Co., Lake Hamilton, Fla. She had lived in Haines City since 1959. A member of Davenport Baptist Church, Davenport, Fla., she was also a member of the Mary Pinckney Ouzts Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a sister, Margaret S. Smith of Donalds, S.C., and a brother, Curtis R. Simmons of Belton, S.C.
Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Blyth Funeral Home, Greenwood, conducted by Dr. Hal Freeman.

Born in Rockmart, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Wesley and Ora Atkins Barber. She was a member of Durst Avenue Church of God.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a daughter, Lynn Shaw of the home; a son, Danny Timmerman of Greenwood; two sisters, Ann Farmer of Ninety Six and Louise Short of Leesburg, Ga.; three brothers, Jerry Barber of Greenwood, Tommy Barber of Due West and Bobby Barber of Ninety Six; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

GREENWOOD — Lucille C. Waters, 93, of Highway 72/221 East, Box 4219, widow of Roy T. Waters, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at her home.
Born in Athens, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Will and Lucy Maynard Colvard. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Cross Hill and the Senior Citizens of Cross Hill.
Survivors include two sons, Ralph Childs of Cross Hill and William Childs of Houston; a daughter, Mrs. Wyatt Ledford of Cross Hill; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Rosemont Cemetery.
