Burroughs Infant
GREENWOOD — Willis Michael Burroughs, infant son of J. Todd and Sveta Pojar Burroughs, of 206 Wellington Drive, passed away March 26, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include his parents; a maternal grandmother, Zoya Pojar of Russia; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Willis H. Burroughs Jr. and Ada B. Harter, all of Ninety Six and Elinor V. Burroughs of Greenville; a sister, Anastasia Burroughs of the home; and a brother, Iouli Burroughs of the home.
Graveside services were at 10 a.m. today in Kinards United Methodist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Scott Cloninger.

Bertha S. Compton
NINETY SIX — Bertha Stacia Compton, 81, formerly of Ninety Six, passed away March 27, 2001, at Edgefield Health Care Center.
Born in Belton, she was a daughter of the late William Elijah and Claudia Vanadore Compton. She graduated from Lander College and Southern Seminary, Louisville, Ky., served as educational director of Green Street Baptist Church, Spartanburg and retired as minister of education from Crescent Hill Baptist Church, Columbia. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church and the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class of the church, former member of the Young at Heart Club and was director of the Vacation Bible School. She also served two terms as a trustee for Connie Maxwell Children’s Home and was a clerk for the Abbeville Baptist Association.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Ben G. (Clara) McAlister of Bradley; and a niece and nephew reared in the home, Mrs. Ronnie (Charlene) Fisher of Ninety Six and Charles L. Compton Jr. of Goose Creek.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Charles F. Owens Jr. and the Rev. Wallace Hughes. Burial will be in Belton City Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Ronnie Fisher, Chuck Compton, Bill McAlister, Dick Wilkes, Brian J. Wertz and Eric Fisher.
Honorary escorts are members of the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class of Temple Baptist Church, along with Dr. Jimmy McAdams, Dr. and Mrs. Alvin O’Shields, the Rev. Virgil Turner, the Rev. J. Minnie Lee Dickerson
McCORMICK — Minnie Lee Dickerson, of Route 2, Box 127, Highway 378 East, widow of Stanley Dickerson, passed away March 27, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
Born in McCormick, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Leoma Tolbert Norman. She lived in Washington , D.C., for 30 years and returned to McCormick in 1999, renewing her membership with Cedar Spring Baptist Church.
She was the last survivor of her immediate family. Survivors include nieces reared in the home, Mable Coats of Greenwood, Sallie Hill and Janie Mitchell, both of Alexandria, Va., and Alice Stevens of Plum Branch.
The family is at the home.

Hazel Miller Hagen
LAURENS — Hazel Miller Hagen, 88, of Martha Franks Retirement Center, widow of Henry E. Hagen, passed away March 27, 2001, at Laurens County Hospital.
Born in Prosperity, she was a daughter of the late Ollie Bushnell and Katie Edwards Miller. She was a retired employee of Watts Mill and a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a sister, Juanita Surles of the Isle of Palms. Graveside services were at 11 a.m. today in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Martha Franks Retirement Center, 1 Martha Franks Drive, Laurens, S.C. 29360.

Minnie Jackson
ABBEVILLE — Minnie Eleanor Jackson, 98, formerly of Chestnut Street, passed away March 26, 2001, at the Saluda Nursing Center.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis Andrew and Annamelia Hagen Jackson. She graduated from Lander University in 1926, where she was a member of the AAUW and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. A retired public school teacher, she taught at Parksville and Brunson schools, Sharon Elementary School, Abbeville County, and Abbeville High School. She was a member of Abbeville Main Street United Methodist Church and Circle No. 4 and the Goodtimers Group of the church.
She was the last member of her immediate family. Survivors include nieces and a nephew.
Services will be at 2:30 Thursday at Harris Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Pickens. Burial will be in Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Visitation is from 1:30-2:30 Thursday at the funeral home.
Family members are at their respective homes.

Mary Bley
GREENWOOD — Mary Bley, 88, of Milligan College, Tenn., widow of Rudolph S. Bley, passed away March 25, 2001, at Wesley Commons Health Care Center.
Born in Rhea County, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late William W. and Belle Fugate Smith. She graduated from Milligan College and lived in the Milligan community for 64 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Hopwood Memorial Christian Church, Milligan College.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Roger Bley of Greenwood; a daughter, Linda Allen of Virginia Beach, Va.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 Saturday in Buttram Cemetery, Dayton, Tenn., conducted by the Rev. Orvel Crowder.
The family is at the home of Dr. Roger Bley, 121 Partridge Road, Greenwood.

James C. Johnson
ANDERSON - Mr. James (Jake) Crawford Johnson, age 76, of 117 Warner Road, Anderson, SC, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at the home of his daughter.
Born in Iva, SC on April 17, 1924, Mr. Johnson was the oldest of five children of the late Joseph J. Johnson and the late Jimmie Lucille Lawton Johnson of Iva. He was a retired contractor and a retired Command Sergeant Major in the South Carolina Army National Guard with forty years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the 166th Combat Engineers in Germany during World War II. He participated in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe Campaigns. He attended Oakwood Baptist Church and was a member of the Adult Choirs.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian Elizabeth Wright Johnson; daughters Elaine Hall and husband Michael of Abbeville, and Darlene Yow and husband Scott of Anderson; brother, Gerald D. Johnson of Greenville and four grandchildren, Ashlea and Lyndsey Hall and Ryan and Jamie Yow.
Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph F. Johnson of Iva, Bobby R. Johnson of Anderson and a sister, Essie Lou Johnson Hanvey of Union.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 30, 2001 at 1:30 PM from the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Reverend Larry Wilson officiating.
Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum with military honors.
The body is at The McDougald Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from Noon until 1:00 PM on Friday.

GREENWOOD — Clara Ballenger Keasler, 87, formerly of 209 -A Lee Street, widow of Clifford Bailey Keasler, passed away March 28, 2001, at McCormick Health Care.

JOANNA — James P. Estes, 63, of 214 W. Calhoun St., husband of Brenda Wooten Estes, passed away March 29, 2001, at his home.
Born in Clinton, he was a son of the late Cletis M. and Lillian J. Estes. He retired from Greenwood Mills, Joanna Plant, served in the Air Force and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Cletis R. Estes of Clinton; a daughter, Stephanie Estes Bishop of the home; a stepdaughter, Melissa R. Crenshaw of Ware Shoals; a brother, Donnie Estes of Joanna; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 Sunday at Gray Funeral Home, Clinton, with burial in Rosemont Cemetery.

Joan Abrams Gunter
WATERLOO — Joan Abrams Gunter, 73, of 174 Arnold Lane, widow of Marvin C. Gunter, passed away March 30, 2001, at her home.
A daughter of the late Lee Arthur and Nettie Laura Kennon Abrams, she retired from Riegel Mill after 17 years of service. She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church for 37 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Amelia G. Fricks of Ware Shoals; a son, Bradley A. Gunter of Waterloo; two stepsons, Mickey Gunter of Waterloo and Lane Gunter of Orange City, Fla.; a sister, Harriett A. Koon of Ware Shoals; a brother, Lee Kennon Abrams of Ware Shoals; four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 Sunday at Mount Olive Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. James Bannister and the Rev. Floyd Hellams. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
