Mabel Hagan
ABBEVILLE — Mabel Anderson Hagan, 80, of Abbeville Nursing Home, widow of R.C. Hagan Jr., passed away Jan. 20, 2001, at the nursing home.
Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Lila McMahan Anderson. She retired from Erskine College and was a member of Greenville Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia H. Howard of Taylors; a son, Robert H. Hagan Sr. of Due West; two sisters, Antho A. Hannah of Abbeville and Lindal A. Erwin of Lake Osnego, Ore.; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greenville Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. George Wilson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 6-7:30 tonight at Harris Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hagan Sr., 1100 Highway 185 South, Donalds.

Carrie Horne
GREENWOOD — Carrie Horne, 83, of 421 Morgan Street, passed away Jan. 22, 2001 at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Preston and Mattie Belle Horne. She retired from Greenwood Mills, Durst Plant, and was a member of Emerald City Church of God.
Survivors include: four sisters, Jewell DeLoach and Madge Dorn, both of Greenwood, Lucille DeLoach of Saluda and Aline Powell of Johnston; and two brothers, Rudolph Horne and James Horne, both of Greenwood.
Services will be at 2 Tuesday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Donald Rowell and the Rev. Tim Taylor officiating.
Visitation is at Harley Funeral Home tonight from 7-9.
The family is at the home of a niece, Joyce Coates, 421 Morgan Street.

Ronald Allen Martin
GREENWOOD — Ronald Allen Martin, 35, of 1118 Edgefield St., husband of Donna Marie DeVitt Martin, passed away Jan. 21, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in New York City, he was a son of Ronald Martin Sr. and Bettie Prince. He was a member of Calvary Chapel Church, a graduate Aviation High School, New York, and had attended machines and metal trade schools and Piedmont Technical College. He was a self-employed contractor with Your Way General Contractors.
Survivors include his wife of the home; his father of Greenwood; his mother of Macon, Ga.; four sons, Cody Barker, Paris Martin, Najee Martin and DeVon Martin, all of the home; a daughter, Shantanique Nelson of Macon; a brother, Anthony Daniels of New York; three sisters, Latonya Wilson, Vania Lyons and Anglique Daniels, all of New York; paternal grandmother, Evelyn Martin of Greenwood; maternal grandmother, Gladys Daniels of New York.
The family is at the home.

John Pressley Phillips
SALUDA — John Pressley Phillips, 63, of Route 5, the husband of Virginia Webb Phillips, passed away Jan. 21, 2001, at his home.
He was born in Edgefield County, son of the late Ida Phillips and the late Willie McManus. He was a member of the Pleasant Lane Baptist Church and a retired employee of Greenwood Mills.
Survivors include: his wife; four sons, Stanley Phillips, of Washington , D.C., Daryl Phillips, of Saluda, Reginald Phillips, of Ft. Knox, Ky., and Christopher Phillips, of Newberry; two daughters, Cyteria Gantt and Kim Brooks, both of Saluda; three sisters, Willie Ella Jackson of Petersburg, Va., Virginia Cook of Philadelphia and Mahalia Marshall, of Saluda; and five grandchildren.
The family is at the home.

WARE SHOALS — Opal Pitt, 82, of Sparks Avenue, wife of Robert “Rob” Pitt, passed away Jan. 21, 2001 at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.

Frank Simpson
WARE SHOALS — Benjamin Frank Simpson, 87, of Poplar Springs Road, passed away Jan. 21, 2001.
He was first married to the late Minnie Wells Simpson, then to Sara Mitchell Simpson. Born in Laurens County, he was a son of the late Wilford A. and Katie Clark Hughes Simpson. He was a self-employed brick mason, a Navy World War II veteran and a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a former Sunday school teacher for many years.
Survivors include his wife of the home; four daughters, Frankie Tumblin of Waterloo, the Rev. Linda Roach, Jane Blackwell and Bennie Henderson, all of Ware Shoals; a stepdaughter, Vickey M. Bailey of Ware Shoals; two stepsons, Gerald Mitchell of Ware Shoals and Jimmy Mitchell of Natchitocles, La.; three sisters, Sara Simmons and Nancy Roach, both of Ware Shoals and Iris Hannah of Cross Hill; 11 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Todd Horton and the Rev. Dr. Robert C. Cooper. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
Honorary pallbearers are members of the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class of the church.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Parker-White Funeral Home.

PHILADELPHIA — Roy Speach, 71, husband of Matilda D. Speach, passed away Jan. 20, 2001, at White Marsh Retirement Home.
Survivors include his wife of 207 Tarrant St., Greenwood, S.C.; a daughter, Patricia Clinkscales of Greenwood; a son, Donald Speach of Hodges, S.C., a brother, Joe Speach of Greenwood; and a sister, Carrie L. Calhoun of Ninety Six, S.C.

ARDEN, N.C. — Mildred Chalmers Vaughn, 80, of Crescent View Retirement Community, widow of Eddie Milton Vaughn Jr., passed away Jan. 21, 2001, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.

DETROIT — Douglas Brown, of 19732 Justine St., former husband of Polly Turner Brown, passed away Jan. 22, 2001, at his home.
Born in McCormick County, S.C., he was a son of the late Maurice and Mildred Holloway Brown, a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and a member of Brewer High School Class of 1964. He employed at Samuel Wittai Steel Strip in Detroit.
Survivors include two daughters, Regina Brown Williams of Greenwood, S.C., and Kendra Brown Wilson of Cokesbury, S.C.; two brothers, Willie Maurice Brown Jr. of Ridgeland, S.C. and Jesse Brown of Due West, S.C.; four sisters, Bertha Brown, Mamie Fuller and Lillie Bell Middleton, all of Greenwood and Rose Clinkscales of Donalds, S.C.; three grandchildren; and his former wife of Greenwood.

GREENWOOD — Ive’anna Chynee Duncan, 3 months, passed away Jan. 22, 2001, at NICU Hospital in Augusta.
Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of Robert Ivan Duncan and Cheteka Sandtez Gaines.
Survivors include her mother of Greenwood; her father of Plum Branch; maternal grandparents, Martha Lester Gaines and Charles Gregory Gaines, both of Greenwood; paternal grandparents, Robert and Brenda Duncan of Plum Branch; maternal great-grandparents, Asbury and Mae Grant of Greenwood and Ethel Gaines of Washington , D.C.; and paternal great-grandparents, Janie and George Calvin Yeldell of Plum Branch; maternal great-great-grandmother, Ruth Perkins Smith of Greenwood; and paternal great-great-grandparents, William and Lula Harris of McCormick.

JOHNSTON — Mary Wells Eanes, 94, passed away Jan. 20, 2001, at Edgefield County Hospital.
Born in Edgefield, she was a daughter of the late Chess and Lillie Lyon Wells. She was a homemaker and a member of Johnston Presbyterian Church.
Graveside services were Monday in Eastview Cemetery, Edgefield.

Marian Satcher Eidson
WARD — Marian Satcher Eidson, 94, widow of Victor Roland Eidson, passed away Jan. 18, 2001, at Edgefield County Hospital.
Born in Ward, she was a daughter of the late Clinton Ward and Marion Bookhardt Satcher. She attended Chicora and Winthrop colleges and was a former teacher. She was a member of Ward Baptist Church, Saluda County Historical Society, Edgefield County Historical Society, The Ridge Heritage Association and The Friends of the Edgefield County Library.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ellerbe O. (Anne) Dukes of Johnston and Mrs. Julian W. (Jean) Dority of Greenville; two sisters, Daisie S. White of Kissimmee, Fla., and Margaret S. Schiffley of Greenville; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were Sunday in Spann Cemetery.

NORTH AUGUSTA — Clara Foreman Franklin, 89, passed away Jan. 20, 2001.
Born in Calhoun Falls, she was a charter member of Friendship Baptist Church and a retired employee of Seminole Mills.
Survivors include a son, Billy Norrell of Avon, N.C.; two daughters, Marian Bryant and Barbara Saggus, both of North Augusta; a sister, Loree Youngblood of Clearwater; 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday at Friendship Baptist Church, Belvedere, with burial in Sunset Memory Gardens, Graniteville.

Julia H. Gibson
ENGLEWOOD, Fla. — Julia H. Gibson, 76, passed away Jan. 19, 2001.
Born in Bridgeport, Conn., she was a retired nursing assistant and a member of the Garden Club, the Pinochle Club and the Women’s Club, all in Englewood. Formerly of Greenwood, S.C., she moved to Englewood in 1992.
Survivors include a daughter, Julia Ann Coleman of Greenwood; and two grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 4 Saturday at Community Presbyterian Church, Englewood.
