Ethel Mae Satterfield

TRAVELERS REST — Ethel Mae Higginbotham Satterfield, 79, of 1320 White Horse Road Extension, wife of Guy Satterfield, passed away Sept. 4, 2000, at Greenville Memorial Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood, she was a member of Everlasting Gospel Tabernacle Church. She retired from J.P. Stevens, White Horse Plant.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Gloria Wells of Easley; a son, James L. Bowling Jr. of Travelers Rest; a sister, Annie Ruth Bryant of Greenwood; two brothers, Olin Higginbotham and Richard Higginbotham, both of Greenwood; two stepdaughters, Joan Stafford of Greer and Sandy Satterfield of Alabama; five grandchildren, two step-granddaughters and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 today at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest, with burial in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the home of a son, James Bowling, 1320 White Horse Road Extension, Travelers Rest.

Annie Singletary Searles

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Annie Singletary Searles, of 430 San Bar Ferry Road, widow of Willie Alfred Searles, passed away Sept. 2, 2000, at University Hospital.
Born in McCormick County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Major and Laura Perrin Singletary. She was a member of Bethel
AME Church, where she was a member of the trustee board, choir and other auxiliaries. She graduated from Allen University with a bachelor of arts degree and received a master’s in education from North Carolina A & T State University. She taught in McCormick County and retired from teaching in Richmond County, Ga.
Survivors include two brothers, John A. Singletary of Plum Branch, S.C., and Major Allen Singletary of Detroit; and four sisters, Laura S. Abrams of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Janie B. Gunn, Thelma V. Powell and Mabel B. Singletary, all of New York City.
Services will be at noon Friday at Bethel AME Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Hudson. Burial will be in Pine Grove AME Church Cemetery, Plum Branch.
Visitation is from 7-8 Thursday at Williams Funeral Home, 1765 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Williams Funeral Home is in charge.
Walker Funeral Home, McCormick, S.C., is in charge of local arrangements.

Bobby Spence Sr.

WARE SHOALS — Bobby Spence Sr. passed away Sept. 5, 2000, at Summit Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Services will be announced by Parker-White Funeral Home, Ware Shoals, which is in charge.

W.R. ‘Raz’ Staggs

NINETY SIX — William R. “Raz” Staggs, 86, of 205 Park St., husband of Elizabeth Robertson Staggs, passed away Sept. 5, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
Born in Belton, he was a son of the late William Elmore and Lillie Snipes Staggs. He retired from Greenwood Mills, Ninety Six Plant, and was a member of Temple Baptist Church and the Men’s Bible Class of the church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Larry Morris of Ninety Six; two daughters, Linda Johnson of Laurens and Patricia Fennell of Durham, N.C.; two sisters, Amy Lee Gaskins and Runette Lark, both of Clinton; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 Thursday at Temple Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles Owens. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Gene Carter, Max Latham, Thomas Crawford, Alan McIntosh, Walt Pruitt, Jeff Beacham and R.C. Fulmer.
Honorary escorts are members of the Men’s Bible Class of the church, along with John Lewis, Alton Vaughn and Fred Boyd.
Visitation is from 2-3 Thursday in the church fellowship hall.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Temple Baptist Church, 95 Saluda St., Ninety Six, S.C. 29666.

Jim Underwood

HODGES — James Franklin Underwood, 61, of 1620 Ross Road, husband of Aline “Pat” Ary Underwood, passed away Sept. 5, 2000, at his home.
Born in Saluda, he was a son of Mary Elizabeth Hodge and the late Thomas Jerry “T.J.” Underwood. He was an employee of Park Seed Co. and was owner and operator of Old Time Auction. He retired from the Navy and served during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Bascomb Lodge No. 363 AFM and was a Hejaz Shriner. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother of the home; two daughters, Regina Lucille “Lucy” Kimbrel of Waterloo and Linda Annette “Anne” Lyerly of Hodges; two brothers, Thomas Barker Underwood of Walhalla and Jerry Underwood of Abbeville; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Friday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Bob Woodyard. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Tommy Holland, Andy Brock, Robert Kimbrel, David Lyerly, Dale Reed and John Tyler.
Honorary escorts are members of the Hejaz Temple Shriners.
Visitation is from 7-9 Thursday at the funeral home.
The family is at the home.

Carl T. Warner

PICKENS — Carl Thompson Warner, 84, of 511 Pine View Drive, husband of Lorena Welborn Warner, passed away Sept. 3, 2000.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Virgil Lee and Katie Long Warner. He graduated from Clemson Military College in 1940 with a degree in mechanical engineering and served as an Army captain during World War II, in New Guinea and Australia. He worked for Singer Co., served on the board of Singer Credit Union and retired as department manager after 30 years of service. He helped to form the Singer Retirees Action Committee. He was a member of Secona Baptist Church, teaching the Men’s Sunday School Class for many years. He helped to start the Republican Party in South Carolina, was a member of the Lions Club and was a charter member of Pickens Jaycees. He served on the Pickens County City Council for two terms and on the board of Seniors Unlimited.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Carol W. Whetsell of Charleston, Martha W. Preston of Atlanta and Nancy L. Warner of Greenville; two sons, Lee A. Warner of Raleigh, N.C., and Alan D. Warner of Pickens; a sister, Mary Ida Woodham of Bishopville; three brothers, Virgil Lee Warner Jr., W. Ervin Warner and Daniel K. Warner, all of Greenwood; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be at 4 today at Dillard Memorial Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Daniel R. Heeringa. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are grandsons and nephews.
Visitation is from 2-3:30 today at the funeral home.

M.P. West

WEST COLUMBIA — M.P. West, 85, husband of Margaret Hutto West, passed away Sept. 5, 2000.
Born in Orangeburg County, he was a son of the late Otis and Nellie Whetstone West. He was an Army veteran, a retired employee of Greyhound Bus Line and a member of Brookland United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Nancy Smith of West Columbia; two sons, the Rev. Mayhew West of Saluda and Michael West of Columbia; two sisters, Catherine Davis of Iva and Jeanette Raymond of Alaska; three brothers, Bernard West of Anderson, Lecroy West of Batesburg-Leesville and Thomas West of Wagener; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Thursday at Brookland United Methodist Church, with burial in Southland Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington.
Memorials may be made to Brookland United Methodist Church.

GREENWOOD — Thomas Allen “Tom” Wilson, 75, of 2202 Old Laurens Highway, husband of Janice Quarles Wilson, passed away Sept. 6, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Visitation is from 7-9 Thursday at Blyth Funeral Home.

Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Lillian Alexander

GREENWOOD — Lillian Mattingly Alexander, 71, of 114 Highland Drive, wife of Robert B. “Bob” Alexander, passed away Sept. 5, 2000, at Wesley Commons.
Born in Dundee, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Russell and Addie Mattingly. She graduated from Owensboro/Daviess County School of Nursing and retired as a registered nurse with Greenwood Methodist Home after 25 years of service. She was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two daughters, Becky Chrisley of Greenwood and Terri L. Alexander of Tampa, Fla.; a son, Patrick R. Alexander of Greenwood; a brother, Jimmy Mattingly of Fordsville, Ky.; a sister, Patsy Baxley of Hartford, Ky.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mark United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ken Timmerman. Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church at 10.
Pallbearers are Willie Moss, Mike McAllister, Dale Chrisley, Reece Going, Joe Campbell, Chris Barnes and Brien Waldrep.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home in Idlewood.

Mildred M. Bodie

TRENTON — Mildred Murrell Bodie, 80, passed away Sept. 6, 2000, at Edgefield Health Care Center.
Born in Edgefield County, she was a daughter of the late Tolbert and Fannie Covington Murrell. She was a retired textile employee with Greenwood Mills, Joanna Plant and a member of Assembly of God Church in Newberry.
Survivors include three sisters, Dorothy Owens of Trenton, Lena Hazel of Newberry and Linda Walker of Johnston; and five brothers, Charles Murrell of Langley, Wayne Murrell and Jerry Murrell, both of Trenton, Monty Murrell of Aiken and Johnny Murrell of Edgefield.
Services will be at 2 Friday at Bland Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Ricky Stokely. Burial will be at 4 in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
