Preston M. Motes Sr.
COLUMBIA — Preston M. Motes Sr., 90, retired Army colonel, widower of Julia H. Motes, passed away July 4, 2000.
Born in Mountville, he was a son of the late Jesse H. and Rosa Fuller Motes. He graduated from Clemson University, the U.S. Army War College, the Command and General Staff College and the Armed Forces Staff College, where he served as a member of the faculty. He served in the Army for more than 34 years, retiring in 1965. Commissioned in 1931, he was assigned to the 327th Infantry, 82nd Division. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and in the U.S. Army Headquarters Fourth Corps Area, Atlanta, Southwest Pacific Theatre, Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines, where he received Four Battle Stars. He also served in the Quartermaster Generals Office, Washington , D.C., Headquarters U.S. Army Europe, Quartermaster Fourth U.S. Army, Fort Sam Houston, Texas , Quartermaster Headquarters U.S. Army Continental Army Command, Fort Monroe, Va., and as commanding officer at New Cumberland Army Depot, New Cumberland, Pa. His many decorations included the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Bronze Star.
After retirement from the Army, he served as vice president of Harrisburg Area Chamber of Commerce, Harrisburg, Pa., retiring in 1973.
He was a member of the Military Order of the World Wars, the Retired Officers Association, Cross Hill Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Fort Jackson Chapter National Sojourners and Jamil Shrine Temple. He was also a member of Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Columbia Post 6, Fort Jackson Officers Club and Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church of Columbia.
Survivors include a son, Preston M. Motes Jr. of Salt Lake City; two daughters, Julia E. Lewis of St. Louis and Rosa Lee Marinak of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a brother, W. Fuller Motes of Mountville; a sister, Caroline M. Rasor of the Martha Franks Home of Laurens; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. Noble Miller. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Visitation is from 7-9 Friday at Greenlawn Funeral Home.

Louise Palmer
GREENWOOD — Louise Steifle Palmer, 95, of 156 Cherokee Drive, formerly of Bradley, widow of Sam T. Palmer, passed away July 5, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late George and Madge Puckett Steifle. She graduated from Bradley School and attended Lander College. She was a member of Cedar Springs Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Madge) Parrish, with whom she made her home; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Friday at Blyth Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Richard McWhite and Dr. Lloyd Melton. Burial will be in Buffalo Baptist Church Cemetery near McCormick.
Pallbearers are John Parrish, Todd Parrish, Robbie Parrish, Andrew Tomlinson, Thomas Britt and Dale Lawson.
Honorary escorts are Smith Steifle, Henry Steifle, John Tom Bannister, Bill Walker, Irvin Ridlehoover, Edward Ferguson and Paul Bollman.
Visitation is from 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

William L. Aiken Jr.
ASTORIA, N.Y. — William Lewis Aiken Jr., 57, husband of Corithian Stevens Aiken, passed away July 6, 2000, at his home.
Born in Hodges, S.C., he was a son of William Aiken Sr. and Eula Mae Johnson Aiken. He was a member of Astoria Community Church.
Survivors include his parents of Hodges; his wife of the home; two daughters, Sylvia Brown and Eulouise Smith, both of Astoria; six brothers, David Aiken of Jamaica, N.Y., Walter Aiken of Greenville, S.C., the Rev. John Aiken of Waterloo, S.C., the Rev. Jerry Aiken Sr. of Ware Shoals, S.C., Bennie Aiken of Durham, N.C., and Patrick Aiken of Hodges; a sister, Mary Washington of Hodges; five grandchildren.
The family is at the home of his parents, 214 Cromer Road, Hodges.

ABBEVILLE — Gerene Williams Hall, 79, of 2790 Nolan Store Road, Bostwick, Ga., wife of Almon R. Hall, passed away July 5, 2000, at Morgan County Hospital in Madison, Ga.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Luthur L. and Irene Reynolds Williams. She was a homemaker and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Samuel E. Jeanes of Bostwick; two brothers, Hugh Williams and Lee Williams, both of Abbeville; a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 2:30 today at Harris Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tye Sorrow. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Visitation is from 1-2 today at the funeral home.

ABBEVILLE — Hazel Mae Higgins, 65, of Thomson Circle, passed away July 7, 2000, at Abbeville Nursing Home.
Born in Edgefield County, she was a daughter of the late Lonnie and Fannie Mae Andrews Higgins Sr. She was a member of Springfield Baptist Church, Edgefield, where she was a member of the Springfield Burial Aid Society.
Survivors include four brothers, Howard Higgins, Lonnie Higgins Jr. and Herbert Higgins, all of Greenwood and the Rev. Charlie Cummings Jr. of Landover, Md.; a sister, Amanda Battle of Honea Path; and a stepsister, Barbara Parks of Augusta, Ga.
The family is at the home of a brother, Howard Higgins, 106 Victory Road, Greenwood.

PROMISED LAND — Services for Catherine Moore Ross Holmes, of 218 Morton Road, will be at 2 Sunday at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Raymond Adams. The Rev. WATERLOO — Mildred Roberts Jones, 72, of 48 Pamela Drive, wife of Paul C. Jones, passed away July 5, 2000, at National Health Care Center in Laurens.
Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Jessie and Lillie Robinson Roberts. She was a retiree of Laurens Glass and a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Ronald P. Jones of Waterloo; a daughter, Mildred Lorraine Lewis of Waterloo; two sisters, Doris Woods of Gray Court and Jewel Curry of Greenpond; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Buddy Harrison and the Rev. Chuck Sprouse.

GREENWOOD — Tommie Wilson Kirby, 85, of Wesley Commons, widower of Vera Pardue Kirby, passed away July 7, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Henry Wilson and Sally James Kirby. He retired from Greenwood Mills, Mathews and Adams plants, and was a member of Greenwood Mills Quarter Century Club and Harris United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a brother, Harold Kirby of Greenwood.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Blyth Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Charles Sperry. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
