Minnie Lee Garrett
PHILADELPHIA — Minnie Lee Stevens Garrett, 74, wife of Edgar Garrett, passed away Jan. 5, 2001, in a Philadelphia hospital.
Born in Edgefield County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Willie Mae Jones Stevens. She was a member of Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church in Philadelphia and a former member of Lower Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Plum Branch, S.C.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, William Garrett of Houston, Micheal Garrett of Minneapolis and Tony Garrett of New Jersey; four daughters, Georgia Lee Johnson, Clara Garrett and Vanessa Harley, all of Philadelphia and Earline Hawkins of Flint, Mich.; two sisters, Nancy Harrison of Callison, S.C., and Dollie M. Cartledge of Plum Branch; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Georgia Gilleland
ANDERSON — Georgia Flynn Gilleland, 78, of 102 Huntington Drive, widow of William H. Gilleland, passed away Jan. 8, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Abbeville, she was a daughter of the late George and Norma Fuller Flynn. A retiree, she was a volunteer at the Anderson Free Clinic. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, where she was a volunteer and a member of The Happy Group.
Survivors include two sons, William H. Gilleland Jr. of Lexington, N.C., and Benjamin C. Gilleland of Columbia; a daughter, Margaret G. Thomas of Acworth, Ga.; two sisters, Margaret F. Bowie and Nell F. Nickles, both of Abbeville; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 today at St. John’s United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. Bob Claytor. Burial will be in Long Cane Cemetery, Abbeville.
The body will be placed in the church at 1, and visitation will be in the church parlor from 1-2.
The family is at the home.

GREENWOOD — Services for Robert Lee “Short” Higgins, of 307 Plowden Ave., will be at 3 Thursday at Springfield Baptist Church, Edgefield, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Duncan, assisted by Bishop Emanuel Spearman and the Rev. Fannie Mae Clark. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2.
Pallbearers are George Thomas, John T. Lyons, John A. Hentz, Gregory Crawford, Mark Carter and Clyde Middleton.

Eckard Lee Logan
GREENWOOD — Eckard Lee Logan, 58, of 113 Watson St., passed away Jan. 10, 2001, at his home.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of Katherine Cohen Lewis and the late Tim Logan Jr. He was a former employee of C.E. Bourne Roofing Co. and a member of Springfield Baptist Church, Laurens Highway.
Survivors include his mother of Greenwood; and a sister, Shirley Kindley of Greenwood.
The family is at the home of his mother, 104 Nix Court, Greenwood.
Services will be announced by Robinson and Son Mortuary Inc., which is in charge.
Maurice W. McDonald
EASLEY — Maurice William McDonald, 78, of 100 Floyd Circle, formerly of Dunean community, husband of Shelley Kimball McDonald, passed away Jan. 8, 2001.
Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late William Asbury and Lula Aiken McDonald. He graduated from Parker High School, served in the Army during World War II and retired from Lawson Products. He was a member of Southwest Greenville Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was first married to the late Eufaula Hooper McDonald.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Julia M. Uz and Mertie Lou McDonald, both of Greenville; four sisters, Geneva M. Cheek and Wilma V. McDonald, both of Greenville, Ruth Lomax of Pickens and Dora Lee Long of Greenwood; a brother, Hubert McDonald of Orlando, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Abigail Black of Greenville; three stepsons, Andrew Kimball of the home, Robert Kimball of Fairfax, Va., and James Kimball of Dover, N.H.; and three grandson.
Services will be at 1 Thursday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 24 Lynn St., Greenville, with burial in Graceland Cemetery, West.
Visitation is from 6:30-8 tonight at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.

CLINTON — Bobbie Jean Reid Owens, 63, passed away Jan. 7, 2001.
A daughter of the late Pleza and Mattie Griffin Reid, she was a former employee of the Whitten Center.
Survivors include a son, Anthony Bernard “Tony” Reid of Clinton; and two sisters, Katherlean Reid Williams of Clinton and Vivian Reid Anderson of Mountville.
Services will be at 2 Thursday at Childs Funeral Home, with burial in Flint Hill Cemetery, Whitmire Highway.

David C. Sutherland
GREENVILLE — David Carroll Sutherland, 60, of 836 S. Piedmont Highway, husband of Christine B. Sutherland, passed away Jan. 8, 2001.
Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late David F. and Frances Hammett Sutherland. He retired from Greenville County Parks and Recreation Association and was a member of Truth Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Scott Mann of Easley; a daughter, Sherrie Mann of Greenville; a stepson, J.H. Harris Jr. of Pelzer; a stepdaughter, Marie Cunningham of Seneca; a sister, Shelby Owens of Greenville; two brothers, Larry Sutherland of Greenwood and Kenneth Sutherland of Powdersville; two grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Truth Missionary Baptist Church, with burial in Graceland Cemetery.

FLAT ROCK, N.C. — Fred Gerald Walker, 69, of Route 2, Thumper Woods Lane, formerly of Waterloo, S.C., husband of Jean Estelle Stamey Walker, passed away Jan. 9, 2001.
Born in Ware Shoals, S.C., he was a son of the late Grady and Fairy Belle Free Walker. He was a retired painter with Charles Bronson and an Army veteran of the Korean conflict.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Linda Carlisle and Lori Walker, both of Flat Rock; a sister, Shirley Abernathy of New Bern; three brothers, Marshall Walker of Valeen, Tenn., Jack Walker of Ninety Six, S.C., and Gene Walker of Saluda, S.C.; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3 Friday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Greenwood, S.C., conducted by the Rev. Grady Lothridge.

Former Lander professor David Dumont, dies
GREENWOOD — David Albert Dumont, 57, of 508 Colonial Drive, husband of Virginia Smith Dumont, passed away Dec. 6, 2000, at his home.
Born in Somersworth, N.H., he was the son of Annette Tanguay Dumont and the late Alfred Dumont. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1968 from St. Francis College, his master’s degree in economics in 1970 from State University College and his Ph.D. in economics in 1977 from SUNY Albany. Dr. Dumont was an economics professor at Lander University where he had taught since 1972. He was co-author of the Greenwood County Business and Economic Report and he was a founding partner of Greenwood Research Associates. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, a member of the American Association of University Professors and a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.
Survivors include his wife of the home; mother of Somersworth; two daughters, Sarah Dumont and Annette Dumont, both of Washington , D.C.; a son, Peter B. Dumont of Newport Beach, Calif.; three brothers, Donald Dumont and Lee Dumont, both of Concord, N.H. and Norman Dumont of Jacksonville, Fla.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, conducted by Rev. Father Richard Harris. Burial will be at Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home.

Alfred White, former Troy mayor, dies
TROY — Alfred Langley “Alf” White Sr., 76, of 106 Hall St., husband of Sue Furqueron White, passed away Dec. 6, 2000, at Wesley Commons in Greenwood.
Born in McCormick County, he was a son of the late Joseph Francis and Bertha Amanda Langley White. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and attended Clemson College. He was the former owner of White Lumber Co. and White Chip Co., retiring after 50 years in the lumber business.
Mr. White formerly served as Mayor of Troy, was a past president of Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association, past president of Carolina-Georgia Lumberman’s Association and formerly served as Trustee of Greenwood School District #50. He was honored with the Outstanding Service to Forestry Award by the McCormick County Forestry Association. He was also a member of Troy United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of Clemson IPTAY and was a Mason.
Survivors include his wife of the home; five sons, Alfred Langley White Jr. of Greenwood, Frank Wesley White and Michael Wayne White, both of Troy, William Herbert “Bill” White of Spartanburg and Donald Patrick White of Palm Bay, Fla.; two daughters, Susie White Darby of Valkaria, Fla. and Nancy White Smith of Callison; a sister, Mildred W. Wier of Abbeville; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 Saturday at Troy United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. George Boyd. Burial will be in Troy Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10.
Pallbearers will be Alf White, Dell White, Michael White, Andrew White, Phillip Darby, Paul Darby, Tim Darby, Christopher Smith and Benjamin Smith.
