CLIFTON J. MOSES
Funeral services for Deacon Clifton J. Moses Sr., 78, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 25, 2002, at New Bethel Baptist Church in Bishopville. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Moses died Friday, Sept. 20, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Christine Jacobs Moses and Jake Mumford. He received his education in the public schools of Lee County. He was member of New Bethel Baptist Church, chairman of the Deacon Board, Usher Board, Ebenezer Gospel Choir and founder of Moses Gospel Choir.
Surviving are his wife, Rosella Green Moses of Hartsville; two daughters, Lillie Dell (Levell) Davis and Connie (Alexander) Coe, both of Hartsville; five sons, Hubert (Lena) Green of Yonkers, N.Y., Clifton J. (Bertha) Moses Jr. of Darlington, Mack (Diane) Moses, and Robert (Judy) Moses, both of Hartsville and Jerry (Jeannette) Moses of Lydia; four sisters, Olena Hough, Bertha Thompson and Carolyn Hammie, all of Hartsville, and Eva Mae Peterson of Silver Springs, Md.; a brother, David (Rosa) Moses of Burlington, N.C.; 22 grandchildren and 16 great–grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
LEO HENRY
Funeral services for Leo Henry, 48, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Henry died Thursday, Sept. 19, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Eddie and Mattie Mae Henry Singletary. He was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. He was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and was a member of The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc.
Surviving are two brothers, Robert Henry of Bishopville and Leroy (Geraldine) Singletary of Kingstree; four sisters, Rovena Henry and Queen Elizabeth Henry, both of Pinola, Rosamae Henry of Baltimore, Md., and Reetha Rogers of Bishopville; a special friend, Sister Annie Bell Simon of Hartsville; five uncles, five aunts and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
BOBBIE JEAN HOOKER
Graveside services for Bobbie Jean Gilbert Hooker, 67, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Westview Memorial Park Cemetery with the Revs. Darryl Bogatay, James L. Dutton, Tim Steen and John W. Griggs officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the church of one's choice.
Mrs. Hooker died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Robbie Conway Gilbert and Ruth Gilbert Lockett. She was the owner of Ruth's Drive–In for more than 50 years, a Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, a member of the Women of the Moose, and was a good Samaritan to the needy.
Surviving are her husband, Marvin “Doc” Hooker Sr. of Hartsville; son, Marvin “Doc” Hooker Jr. and Dixie Avant of Hartsville; daughters and son–in–law, Angela and Bill Stokes of Hartsville, Marvene H. Rowland of North Myrtle Beach; brother and sister–in–law, Charles D. and Glenda Gilbert Sr. of Hartsville; grandchildren and spouse, Robert “Trey” Stokes, William G. “Will” Stokes, Maggie and Darrel Woods, Ruth C. Rowland, Jamie A. Rowland, Justin McManus; nephews, Quincy “Woody” Gilbert, Charles D. “Chad” Gilbert; and two great–grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, James Harvey “Hart” Hooker.
DON GRANT SR.
BISHOPVILLE — Funeral services for Don Dubose Grant Sr., 76, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Phelps officiating. Burial followed in Cypress Cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Bishopville, SC, or to the charity of one's choice. Mr. Grant died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002. Born in the Cypress Community of Lee County, he was a son of the late Dagnall D. and Cora DuBose Grant. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. While at the university, he was the president (Number I) of Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity, and Blue Key National Honor Society. He was the owner of D. D. Grant & Son Farm, Gin, and store, and a partner in Interstate Tractor Co. He was a member and former chairman of the Administrative Board and Board of Trustees of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, president of Bishopville Country Club, Lions Club, Lee County Farm Bureau, chairman of the Board of Trustees of Woodward Public Library, former chairman of the Lee County Board of Education, the Advisory Board of the National Bank of South Carolina, and former member of the Board of Visitors of the Medical University of South Carolina. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Dukes Lyles Grant; son and daughter–in–law, Don DuBose Grant Jr. and wife Beth of Bishopville; daughter, Dotty Grant Williamson of Bishopville; four grandchildren; step–daughters, Helen Lyles Geer of Charleston and Barbara Lyles Anderson of Atlanta, Ga. He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy Edmunds Grant.
HELEN POLSON
Funeral services for Helen Howle Polson, 84, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Spring Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. Ed Griggs and Buddy Amerson officiating. Mrs. Polson, widow of Woodrow J. Polson, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Tillman and Florrie Hawkins Howle. She was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughter–in–law, Carole Polson of Hartsville; special niece, Macy Kirven of Hartsville; nephew and spouse, Alan and Doris Atkinson of Hartsville; several other nieces and nephews; five grandchildren; and five great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Jennings Polson, and her daughter Agnes Windham.
GLYNN D. STEEN
Funeral services for Glynn D. Steen, 59, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Fourth Street Baptist Church with the Revs. Brad Lynch and Wade Miles officiating. Burial followed in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery in Chesterfield, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Steen died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late James B. and Leila Griggs Steen. He retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 36 years and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He was a member of Clanton Plain Baptist Church, a member of the Woodman of the World and served in the U. S. Navy for four years.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Sellers Steen of the home; son and daughter–in–law, Michael G. and Ryan W. Steen of Darlington; brothers and sisters–in–law, Jarvis and Jackie Steen of Chesterfield, Julius and Cathie Steen of Lugoff; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Donnie Steen and Gene Steen.
WAYNE MELTON
Funeral services for Robert Wayne Melton, 50, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carroll Pope officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Melton died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Robert Kistler Melton and the late Marlene Odom Melton. He was a graduate of Lamar High School, attended Florence–Darlington Technical College and Francis Marion University, and previously served in the South Carolina National Guard.
Surviving are his father of Hartsville; sister and brother–in–law, Alice and Charles Stephens of Hartsville; and brother and sister–in–law, Ronnie and Janice Melton of Hartsville.
WINSTON SAWYER SR.
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Winston Sawyer Sr. were held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. D. L. Hughes, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Faith Memorial Gardens directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Sawyer died on Thursday, Sept. 19, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Washington and Mamie Brockington Sawyer. He attended the Darlington County public schools. He was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church and was a lifetime farmer and was gainfully employed by the North Carolina Tobacco Industry, South Carolina Road Construction, Royster Fertilizer Co. and the Pee Dee Farmers Market and was owner of the Community Convenient Store.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 58 years, Mrs. Florence C. Sawyer of the home; four loving children, Francis (Hermina) Phillips of Darlington, Argie (Jasper, deceased) Chamberlain, Winston (Shirley) Sawyer Jr. and Charlotte (Stephen) Redden, all of Florence; eight grandchildren, Renaee (Michael) Hammond, Ronald (Coleen) Phillips, Shanea Chamberlain, Rainard Chamberlin, Frederick Sawyer, Calvin Sawyer, Michael Sawyer and La'twandra Sawyer; four great–grandchildren; five sisters–in–law, nieces and nephews. His sister, Mary Smith, preceded him in death.
NELLE R. GARDNER
ORANGEBURG — Funeral services for Nelle Ross Gardner, 91, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at the Methodist Oaks Chapel with the Rev. Kermit Shrawder and the Rev. Dr. Terry Peele, officiating. Burial was held in Welch Neck Baptist Church Cemetery in Society Hill, directed by Dukes–Harley Funeral Home of Orangeburg.
Mrs. Gardner died Sunday morning, Sept. 22, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James A. Ross and Lilly Wheeler Ross. She was a graduate of Queens Business College in Florence. She was retired as director of accounting from Wachovia Bank in Winston Salem, N.C., where she served 27 years. Mrs. Gardner moved to Orangeburg in 1981 and was a member of First Baptist Church the Thursday Bridge Club and the Azalea Garden Club. She was the widow of Lloyd L. Gardner.
Survivors are a sister, Miss Margaret Ross of Orangeburg; a special friend, Mrs. Gloria Green of Orangeburg; six nieces and nephews and a number of great and great–great nieces and nephews.
