BILLY WELLS
Funeral services for William Pope Wells, 79, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Surrett officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church Building Fund, 145 East College Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Wells died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002. Born in Florence, he was a son of the late E. Gordon and Elizabeth Pope Wells. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, served on the Board of Trustees and was a member of the United Methodist Men. He was a veteran of W W II and was retired from Horne Ford.
Surviving are his wife, Flossie Vassy Wells of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Chip and Maggie Wells of Laurinburg, N.C.; sister, Maria Wells Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; and grandchildren, Emma Margaret Wells and William P. Wells III.
MARGARET ASKINS
Graveside services for Margaret Hill Askins, 82, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, in Magnolia Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Bethea Baptist Home, 157 Home Ave., Darlington, SC 29532.
Mrs. Askins, widow of Paul R. Askins, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late Miles Walker and Bessie McCoy Hill. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Paul and Alexandra Askins of Stafford, Va.; granddaughters, Sara A. Baughman, Paula A. Graham, Constance Askins; and grandson, Matthew Baughman.
ROBERT SEXTON
McBEE — Funeral services for John Robert Sexton, 76, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, 2002 at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chris Denny officiating. Burial followed in McBee Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
Mr. Sexton died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Jeremiah Dockery and Nola Margaret Ferguson Sexton. He graduated from McBee High School, served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and afterwards attended the University of South Carolina. He worked with father at McBee Motor Company. He attended McBee Presbyterian Church until he moved to Greenville in 1959, working as a car salesman until his retirement in 1989.
Surviving are his daughters, Paulie S. Miles of Columbia, Susan S. Driggers of Sumter, Robin S. Poole of Gree; brother, William James Sexton of Perry, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
JULIAN MOORE
Funeral services for Julian Shull Moore, 62, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at West Hartsville Baptist Church with the Revs. Tim Tomlinson and Dr. Bev Kennedy officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Moore died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Julian S. and Sammie Segars Moore Jr. He was a charter member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and a member of Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173 and the Outdoor Club. He was owner and operator of Drives and Controls Specialties.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra Windham Moore of Hartsville; sons, Julian R. Moore of Hartsville, Kenneth Daniel Moore of Myrtle Beach; brothers, Frank S. Moore of Stone Mountain, Ga., Richard R. Moore of Hartsville; grandchildren, Amanda Rivera of Hartsville, Daniel Robert Moore and Casey Ryan Moore, both of Elburn, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson, Jason Daniel Moore.
SUZIE PARROTT
Funeral services for Suzie “Shug” Parrott were will be held at 3 p.m. today, Sept. 18, 2002 in Darlington Deliverance Temple. Burial wil lbe in New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mrs. Parrott died on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. She was born in Dozell, S.C., a daughter of the late William and Frances Jennings Landson. She was married to the late Hughly Parrott. They were members of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Bishopville. They then left South Carolina and moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where they became members of Antioch Baptist Church.
Survivors are a step–son, Joe Lewis (Ernestine) Parrott of Sumter; a host of nices and nephews, Thomasina (Roland) Lucas of the home; Eddie (Mary) Lewis, Nathaniel (Betty Brown, Louis (Renata) Delane, Lucious Delane, Jr., Carl McKnight and James (Pick) Brown, Mable Harris, Rudell Brown, Rosa Mae (Malachi) Dargan, Christine (Wolney) Jackson, Forstine McBride, Lula Mae Dixon and Mary Lee Jackson; her Goddaughter, Jacqueline Mock; and six step–grandchildren.
REV. BARBARA POOSER
CHERAW — Funeral services for Barbara Pooser, 89, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Word of Life Christian Center Ministries in Bennettsville. Burial was in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Cheraw, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
The Rev. Pooser died Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late Rudolph Allen and Ruth Anne Cox. She received her education at Burnett Avenue Grammar School, West Orange High School, Newark, N. J., and Community Bible Institute of New York. The Rev. Pooser and her husband later moved to Cheraw, and while there she attended Clinton College in Rock Hill, where she received an associate's degree in Biblical studies. She was ordained and appointed pastor of Poplar Hill and Shiloh AME Zion churches.
In 1990, she and her husband joined in fellowship with the Word of Life Christian Center Ministries, where she became assistant pastor, member of Board of Directors of Word of Life Christian Center Ministries, teacher of the New Members Class and elected National Mother of Unity Fellowship Conference. She also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Resource Center of Marlboro County. In these capacities, she was a faithful and loyal servant. She served as the assistant pastor of Word of Life Christian Center Ministries.
Surviving are her adopted son and daughter, Wilbur and Pastor Iva D. Hodge of Hartsville; two adopted grandchildren, Rene and Gregory Bostic of Atlanta, Ga.; two adopted great–grandchildren, Akia Rene Bostwick and Gregory Keith Bostwick Jr., both of Atlanta, Ga.
ERNIE VUNDAGLES
Funeral services for Ernie Vundagles, 75, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Vundagles died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002. He was born in Lack City, Fla. He received his education in the public schools of Bradford County and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc.
Surviving are his wife, Lisa Vundagles of the home; a daughter, Shiley Watson of Washington , D.C.; two sons, Larry Smith of Washington , D.C., and Ditaryon Armstrong of Lawtey, Fla.; a sister, Ellen Perry of Maryland; a goddaughter, Keosha Bowden of the home; 11 grandchildren and 14 great–grandchildren.
ELIZABETH S. WELCH
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Elizabeth Shorter Welch, 77, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Welch, widow of John Richard Welch, died Saturday, Sept. 14, in a Florence hospital. She was born in Danville, Va., daughter of the late Peter Benjamin and Minnie Gay Webb Shorter. She was a housewife and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are five daughters, Barbara (Chris) Stanley, Pat (Wayne) Haynie, and Carol (Bryan) Odom, all of Darlington, Brenda (Roy) Mattox of Hartsville and Theresa (Russell) Dozier of Florence; eight grandchildren, Samantha (Terry) Gainey, Jamie (Crystal) Stanley, Kristin Dozier, Dustan Jordan, Matthew Haynie, Tiffany Jordan, Jason Jordan and Taylor Odom; five great–grandchildren, Jordan Gainey, Joshua Gainey, Cheyenne Dozier, Danni Gainey and Jonathan Dozier; also two sisters, Ruby Wiggins of Pelham, N.C., and Lorraine Starr of Billings, Mont.
Mrs. Welch was preceded in death by a great–granddaughter, Randi Michelle Gainey; sisters, Pearl Shorter Maddox, Beatrice Shorter King, and brothers, Walter Shorter and Andrew Shorter.
