ALLEANE M. LEWIS
DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Alleane McQueen Lewis, 80, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Mechanicsville Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Pastor Frankie Tanner and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lewis died Thursday, Sept. 5, in a local nursing home. She was born in Robeson County, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Olin and Mamie Sessoms McQueen. She was a member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church. Mrs. Lewis worked for a number of years at B.C. Moore's as a sales clerk.
Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by two brothers, S. J. McQueen and Marvin McQueen, and one sister, Gladys Hayes.
Survivors include her husband, Ernest Lewis of Darlington; one brother, Chester (Mary) McQueen of Darlington, and one sister, Ruby McQueen Isgett of Darlington.
ANN NEWSOM
BISHOPVILLE — Private funeral services for Ann Elizabeth Newsom, 58, will be held by the family. Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Memorials may be made to the Lee County Humane Society.
Mrs. Newsom died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Ira B. and Elma Stokes Newsom.
Surviving are her sister, Carolyn Sue Benton of Ft. Myers, Fla.; brother, Richard Newsom of Charlotte, N.C.; nieces, Nikki Seybold and Suzanne Newsom.
MARION J. MILLER
DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Marion J. “Bubba” Miller, 50, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Miller died Thursday, Sept. 12, from injuries sustained in a traffic accident. He was born in Florence County, a son of the late Ernest J. and Marian “Shine” Jordan Miller. He was a member of the St. John's High School class of 1971 and was a lineman for Sumter Builders.
Surviving are his sister, Ernie Ann Weatherford of Lamar, and his brother, Billy Mahn of Dovesville; also several nieces and nephews.
CARTER LANGSTON
RINGGOLD, Ga. — Funeral services for Shields Carter Langston, 74, formerly of Lamar, were held on Sept. 10, 2002, at W. L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., with burial in Calvary Gardens.
Mr. Langston died in his home in Ringgold, Ga. on Sept. 8. He was a World War II veteran and a retried member of the Alhambra Shrine Temple.
Mr. King, known as Carter “Pa,” is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Hudson Langston, formerly of Lamar; a daughter, T. Fay Clever of Rutledge, Tenn.; two sons, Bill Langston and Robert Langston, both of Ringgold, Ga.; eight grandchildren; three great–grandchildren; three brothers, William D. Langston of Cohoes, N.Y., Reuel Langston of Waterpelet, N.Y., and Chris Langston of Darlington; three sisters, Nellie Langston Kirby of Timmonsville, Opal Langston Shepard of Wilmington, N.C., and Waylyn Langston Parnell of Bishopville.
Mr. Langston was preceded in death by a brother, Theo Langston of Lamar, and a sister, Mary Langston DeFee of Darlington.
JAMES KING
ROCK HILL — Funeral services for James Harold King Sr., 78, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at Bethel United Methodist Church with interment in Laurelwood Cemetery with the Revs. Stephen McCameron, Mary Frances and Jack Walters officiating, directed by Greene Funeral Home of Rock Hill.
Mr. King died Sunday, Sept. 15, at his home. He was a native of Chesterfield County and the son of the late Gillian Capers King and the late Iva Jones King James and step–father the late Sidney James.
He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and a member of Corinthian Masonic Lodge #416 in Newport, a member of York County Crescent Shrine Club and a member of Heiaz Shrine Temple in Greenville. Mr. King was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II and a lifelong member of VFW and the American Legion. He was a driver for the senior citizens in Rock Hill. He was a retiree from Duff–Norton in Charlotte, N.C. with 16 years of service. He was the widower of Minnie Magdalen Pressley King.
Surviving are two sons, James H. King Jr. and Larry T. Threatt, both of Rock Hill; his daughter, Diane K. Barnes of Rock Hill; two sisters, Edith Ruff of Chester, Kathleen Cogdill of Greer; five grandchildren and four great–grandchildren.
Masonic services will be held this evening, Sept. 18, at 7, and visitation will follow until 8:30 at the Downtown Chapel and at other times at the home.

CURTIS CUFFIE
Funeral services for Curtis Cuffie, 47, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Sept. 18, 2002, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Cuffie died Friday, Sept. 13, in New York City, N.Y. He was born in Darlington, a son of the late Ernest and Jeffie Bell Cuffie. He attended Butler High School and was a graduate of John J. High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was employed with Cooper Union of Advancement and Artist.
Surviving are two daughters and a son of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister, Alova Williams of Harrisburg, Pa.; four brothers, Thomas Cuffie of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Ernest (Jeanette) Cuffie of Chilhowie, Va., Eddie (Donna) Cuffie of Charlotte, N.C., and Alvin (Peggy) Cuffie of Hartsville; an aunt, Mildred McCullough of Raleigh, N.C.; a special friend, Carol A. Thompson of Atlanta, Ga.; nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

DARLINGTON — James Bishop, 52, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
GILBERT LEE GRAINGER
RODANTHE, N.C. — Graveside services for Gilbert Lee Grainger, 68, were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, in Florence County Memorial Garden Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington, with local arrangements by Twiford Colony Chapel of Maneto, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or charity of your choice.
Mr. Grainger died Saturday, Sept. 14, at his residence after a long illness. He was born in Horry County on Jan. 19, 1934. Before moving to Rodanthe, N.C., he lived in Darlington and Hartsville. He owned and operated Southern Photo in Hartsville and Rodanthe. Mr. Grainger was the son of the late Malcolm K. and Ina H. Grainger.
Surviving are his wife, Glendale C. Grainger of Rodanthe, N.C.; two sons, Kenneth Grainger of Rodanthe, N.C., and Aaron Grainger of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren and one great–grandchild; one brother, Dave (Libby) Grainger of Darlington; five sisters, Ethel Smith and Peggy (Basil) Jordan, both of Darlington, Alice (Gene) Gainey of Pamplico, Ovelene (Bill) Cox of Cocoa, Fla., and Jeane Mueller of Saule City, Wis.
JACK LUNN
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Jack Lunn were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at Centersville A.M.E. Church with the Rev. J. L. Rouse, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Lunn died Friday, Sept. 13, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Andrew “Bunk” and Bessie Williams Lunn. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools and was employed with Sonoco Products Co. of Hartsville, where he retired after 25 years. At an early age, he attended Church of God and Cherry Grove Baptist Church. After marriage, he joined Centersville A.M.E. Church where he served as deacon, member of the Bible Study Club, chaplin of the Sunday school and in any other capacity as needed.
Survivors include his loving wife, Mrs. Lillie Mae Lunn of the home; his children, Marella (Willie) Brown of Florence, Mary (Wesley) Coles of Glendale, Ariz., Joan Lunn of Marietta, Ga., Patricia Lunn and Shiley (Clyde) Green, both of Darlington, and Jackson Lunn Jr. of E. Elmhurst, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Rosa Pegues of Charlotte, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and three great–grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
WILLIAM M. HUTSON
DARLINGTON — A graveside memorial service for William Marion Hutson, 70, was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, in Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington with the Rev. Todd Parrish officiating, directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.
Mr. Hutson died Wednesday, Sept. 11, at his residence. He was born in York County on Jan. 11, 1932. He was the son of the late Frealon Lester and Queen Elizabeth Dority Hutson. Mr. Hutson served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a machinist with Perfection Gear until his retirement.
Survivors include a daughter, LaVan (Berry) Tadlock of Georgetown; three brothers, Frealon L. (Annie Lou) Hutson Jr. of Timmonsville, Samuel A. (Gerti) Hutson of Bishopville and Allan (Pat) Hutson of Jacksonville, N.C.; five sisters, Mary Elizabeth Stalvey, Gladys (J.C.) Brown, Rosalee (Johnny) Blackmon, and Ann Hart, all of Darlington, and Pauline Grainger of Bishopville.
