FRANK E. ROGERS JR.
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Frank Esby Rogers Jr. were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at St. Matthews's Episcopal Church with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home. Mr. Rogers died Monday, Sept. 9, at his home in Darlington. He was the son of Mary Anita Tartt and Frank Esby Rogers, born Aug. 20, 1920. He attended St. John's school and after graduation went to Clemson College, where he was editor–chief of The Agarian, alumni secretary of Blue Key, president of the Senior “Y” Council, president of the YMCA Council, lieutenant colonel and executive officer of the 2nd Regiment staff, secretary/treasurer of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. He was a member of the tennis team, Minor “C” Club, Tiger staff, Calhoun Forensic Society, Preshing Rifles, Scabbard and Blade, Alpha Phi Omega, and the Pee Deeans. He graduated with a degree in agricultural engineering in 1941 and was listed in “Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.”
After college he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served as a fighter pilot on the USS Lexington in the Pacific during World War II. He received numerous citations and awards including the Air Medal for “his zealous devotion to duty throughout numerous extremely hazardous combat missions” and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his “superb airmanship, indomitable fighting spirit, and cool courage in the face of overwhelming opposition.” He participated in many operations that earned the Lexington the Presidential Unit Citation for “extraordinary heroism in action.”
When the war was over, he returned to Darlington, and in 1948 he married Jessie Williamson Coggeshall. They moved to his family's farm on Rogers Road and restored the house built around 1870 by his grandfather, Robert Hart Rogers. He was one of the first farmers in the area to use crop irrigation and to grow florist–quality gladiolas, tube roses, and various truck crops; and for a number of years he operated a nursery.
Later he went into the investment business and opened a brokerage office, a branch of Johnson, Coleman, Manning and Smith, on the Square in Darlington. He was associated with several other brokerage companies in his career and retired from AG Edwards in Florence.
He grew up in the First Baptist Church and later joined St. Matthew's Episcopal Church where he was a former vestryman and Sunday school teacher. He was also past president of the Darlington Historical Society, and a charter member of the Men's Dance Club.
Survivors include his wife, Jessie Coggeshall Rogers; daughters Jessie Rogers Whitaker of Darlington, Mary Rogers Field of Greencastle, Ind., and Marion Rogers Coxe of Darlington. His grandchildren are Anne, Simon, Stephen and Molly Whitaker; Marion and Jane Field; and Rogers, Richard and Elizabeth Coxe.
HYACINTH BYRD
Graveside services for Hyacinth Byrd, 89, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Darlington Memory Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Swift Creek Baptist Church, 413 North Center Road, Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mrs. Byrd died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002. She was a daughter of the late Claude and Cainie McFarland. She was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for a number of years, was a resident of the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee, and a graduate of Antioch High School. She was married to her childhood sweetheart for 63 years.
Surviving are her daughters and sons–law, Phyllis B. and Ned Blackman of Hartsville, Ruth B. and Furman Galloway of Columbia, Jean B. Smoak of Mullins; six grandchildren; eight great–grandchildren.
FANNIE GRANGER
Funeral services for Fannie Brannon Granger, 84, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at the Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Darryl Bogatay will officiate with burial in Sandy Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Granger died Tuesday, September 10, 2002. Born in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Major Watkins Brannon. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving are her son and daughter–law, Coley “Buddy” and Shirley Granger of Hartsville; daughters and sons–law, Essie Lee and Jack Sellers of Holiday, Tenn., Dorothy and Marshall Johnson of Hartsville, Carolyn Hall of Hartsville; sister, Ruby Hyatt of Rock Hill; brother, Flem Brannon of Rock Hill; 17 grandchildren; 29 great–grandchildren; 10 great–great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Charles Granger and Heyward Granger.
MARGIE B. WADE
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Funeral services for Margie Bullard Wade, 70, were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at the Sedgefield Baptist Church with Dr. Andy Royals and the Rev. Frank Aldridge officiating. Interment followed at Green Hill Cemetery directed by Hanes–Lineberry Funeral Home of Greensboro, N.C.
Mrs. Wade died Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the arms of her family at her home. She slipped peacefully away to be with her Lord. She was a member of Sedgefield Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Conrad Wade of the home; three daughters, Rita (John) Capps and Sheryl (Ed) Rider, both of Jamestown, N.C., and Linda (David) Cobb of Wake Forest, N.C.; a son, Conrad (Teri) Wade II of Summerfield, N.C.; grandchildren, Christie, Shea and Jennifer Capps, Conrad Wade III and Sarah Wade, Kenny McLamb and Thomas Cobb.

DAVIS M. SANDERS
PICKENS — Funeral services for Dr. Davis Milton Sanders, 97, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, in the chapel of Dillard Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Dillard Alexander and the Rev. Dr. Lloyd Baston officiating. Burial will follow at Oconee Memorial Park in Seneca.
Dr. Sanders died Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Martha Frank Baptist Retirement Center in Laurens. He was born in Oconee County, and was the son of the late John Caldwell Sanders and Lucy Elizabeth Davis Sanders. Dr. Sanders was twice married; first to the late Gladys Trogdon Sanders and secondly, to the late Mildred Alexander Sanders. He was a graduate of Furman University and South Baptist Theological Seminary. He was an active pastor for 45 years, having served First Baptist Church of Hartsville from 1952–1970, and First Baptist Church of Tifton, Ga. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Laurens and was a member of Abney Masonic Lodge of Kershaw and in 1998 was presented a 70–year certificate and pin.
Dr. Sanders was a former trustee of Furman University and Coker College and served as the first chairman of the Board of Trustees of the South Carolina Baptist Ministries for the Aging which now administers Bethea Baptist Home. He was honored at the South Carolina Baptist Convention in 1996 with the presentation of his portrait, which now hangs in the Lottie Moon Library at Martha Franks Center.
Surviving are two step–sons, Dr. Dillard (Patsy) Alexander and Milton (Jerilynn) Alexander of Six Mile; one step–daughter, Electra (Carrol) Alexander Pell of Cashiers, N.C.; one brother, Meade Sanders of Loganville, Ga.; four step–grandchildren, Clifton Alexander and Robin Alexander, both of Six Mile, Lee Alexander of Knoxville, Tenn., and Electra Alexander Smith of Asheville, N.C.; eight step–great–grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Active pallbearers will be Clifton Alexander, Robin Alexander, Dr. Ellison Smith, Paul Kessens, Charles A. Finley Jr., Jim Goodman, Randy Lesley and Don Gravely.

JIMMIE BLACKWELL
McBEE — Funeral services for Jimmie Reddy Blackwell, 93, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home in Hartsville with the Rev. Charlie Short officiating. Burial was in the Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Blackwell died on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002. She was born in South Carolina, a daughter of the late James and Blanche Jones Reddy. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Louise Anderson of Ft. Washington , Md., and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Charles E. (Buck) Miller.
