Evelyn L. Davis Rucker, 83, widow of Rayford R. Rucker, Sr., died Friday, August 1, 2008 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Davis and the late Ora Watts Davis.
Mrs. Rucker was a member of Dalzell United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Rayford R. Rucker, Jr. of St. Matthews; two daughters, Laura Westfall of Perrysburg, OH and Darleen Rucker of Greenville; four grandchildren, Ray Rucker, III, Troy Westfall, Ty Westfall, and Heather Rucker Russell; two great-grandchildren, Victoria Westfall and Aiden Westfall.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Emily Allen officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Hubert Eugene "Gene" Davis, Sr.

Hubert Eugene (Gene) Davis, Sr., 62, died Friday, August 1, 2008 at Tuomey Healthcare System.
Born in Sumter he was a son of the late Hubert Lonnie Davis and Alice Parker Davis.
Mr. Davis was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and also attended New Start Community Church of the Nazarene. He was a retired industrial engineer.
Surviving are one son, Bubba Davis of Orlando, Fl.; one daughter, Gina Davis of Columbia; one brother, Jay Davis of Sumter; two sisters, Patricia Davis of Columbia and Rebecca Davis of Beaufort; one grandchild, Patrick Smith; a special friend, Jomarie Spencer of Bishopville.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Monday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Turner and Mr. Jimmy Davis officiating.
Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Davis, Warren Davis, Johnny Davis, Jim Poole, Charlie Broadway and Ernie Broadway.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Maintenance Engineering Dept. of Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

John Wesley Johnson
1914-2008
John Wesley Johnson, 94, husband of Agnes Harvey Johnson, died Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at the home of his daughter.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Theo C. Johnson and the late Susan Grooms Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was a member of Northside Memorial Baptist Church. He was a retired Shaw Air Force Base Civil Engineer. He was a member of Claremont Masonic Lodge #64, the Jamil Shrine Temple, Jamil Color Guard, Gamecock Shrine Club, Beauclare Chapter #20 Order of Eastern Star, and the Woodmen of the World.
Surviving is his wife of 71 years of Sumter; one daughter, Louise J. Barkley and husband William L. “Buddy” of Sumter; a grandson, Edward O. Johnson and wife Lois of Louisiana; two great-granddaughters, Sara McGee and husband Michael of Louisiana, Heather Fuller and husband Aaron of Sumter; two great-great-grandchildren, Abagail and Parker; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Retha Deen and Edna Carnell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Holley and Rev. Jim Johnson officiating.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jim Johnson, Mike Johnson, Rick Johnson, Larry Johnson, Greg Johnson and Allen Johnson.
Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Jamil Shrine Divan and past Potentates.

Ralph "Hank" Wilson
1922-2003

Ralph Holmes “Hank” Wilson, 80, widower of Ruth “Peggy” Rivers Wilson, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at a local nursing center.
Born in Florence, he was the son of the late Harold “Mack” McIver Wilson and the late Emmie Haynie Wilson.
He was a lifelong resident of Sumter. He was a graduate of Sumter High School and was very active in high school sports and was received into the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. At the beginning of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy, served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex for 30 months until the war ended in August 1945. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post #15, a life member of VFW Post #3034, Sumter Elks Club #855, the Columbia/Sumter Hunting and Fishing Club and the Mt. Vernon Coffee Club.
He retired in 1990 from Rivers-Wilson Appliance and Furniture Company having been in operation for 32 years.
Surviving are two sisters, Julia Wilson Fennell of Oswego and Mary Wilson Beckham of Columbia; two nieces, Cathy M. McElhaney of Oswego and Becky Moran of Charleston; three nephews, Haynie Beckham of Columbia, Rocky Rivers of Columbia and Mark Rivers of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bruz and Celeste Rivers of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Haynie M. Wilson
Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday in the Sumter Cemetery with Rev. Phil Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5 to7 P.M. Thursday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

Fannie Ruth Nicholes

Fannie Ruth Nicholes, 88, died Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at a local nursing center.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Judson Fuller Nicholes and the late Addie Maybell Parrish Nicholes.
Miss Nicholes was a member of First Southern Methodist Church and was a retired telephone operator with General Telephone Company.
Surviving is one brother, Judson Fuller Nicholes, Jr. of Cincinnati, OH; one niece, Gwyn DuBose-Schmitt of Columbia; one nephew, Coit M. DuBose of Oklahoma City, OK.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris N. Kiker and Mildred N. DuBose.
Graveside services will be held at 3 P.M. Friday in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Ellison Evans officiating.

Gordon “Corky” Eugene Dennis, Sr., 74, husband of Kathryn S. Dennis, died Saturday, August 30, 2003 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Tampa, Florida he was a son of the late Nathan G. Dennis, Sr. and the late Alta Thieme Dennis.
Mr. Dennis was a graduate of McClenaghan High School and attended Furman University where he lettered in football. He was a member of Dalzell United Methodist Church, the VFW, and the American Legion. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was a U. S. Army Korean War veteran.
Surviving are his wife of Dalzell; two sons, Gordon Dennis, Jr. of Florence, Scott M. Dennis and wife Hoa of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Bonita D. Johnson of Florence; three stepsons, Eddie Boyce of North Carolina, Ric Boyce, and Ken Boyce both of Dalzell; three step-daughters, Ginny Dority and Julie Kirven both of Sumter, and Darlene Boyce of North Carolina; three grandsons, Scott Dennis, Jr., Dusty Johnson and Devin Johnson; nine step-grandchildren, Avril Ardis, Amber Boyce, T.J. Boyce, Casey Dority, Kenny Zeigler, Troy Zeigler, Witt Dority, Blake Norton and Lake Kirven.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shawn M. Dennis.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Vernon Deese and Mr. Ric Boyce officiating.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
