JACK HALL
Graveside services for Jack Hall, 60, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Gainey Cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. Hall died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Jessie and Willie Hall Hall. He was a member of Faith Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving are sons, Pete Hall of Landers, N.C., J.T. Hall of Kannapolis, N.C.; daughters, Carilyn Hall and Donna Hall both of Concord, N.C., Jackie Hall; brothers, Bill C. Hall of Landers, N.C.; sisters Bet H. Munn of Conway, Ellen Lewis and Elma Key both of Concord, N.C.; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services for Oblee Hilderbrand, 82, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Chapel Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Mr. Hilderbrand died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002. Born in York County, he was a son of the late C. M. and Frances Stewart Hilderbrand. He was a member and deacon of Chapel Hill Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked with the city of Hartsville for 20 years as the director of utilities.
Surviving are his wife, Mae Lovelace Hilderbrand of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Kevin and Jennie Hilderbrand of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Grace and Lawrence Hope of Hartsville, Connie and Lee Benoy of Englishtown, N.J.; sister, Buree Pendleton of Gastonia, N.C.; grandchildren, Sandy Jones, Robin Gibson, Chat Hope, Wesley Hilderbrand, Ernie Hilderbrand, Candi Benoy; and great–grandchildren, Caitlyn Hathaway and Brooke Jones.

Funeral services for William E. Redding, 74, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at West Hartsville Baptist Church. Mr. Redding, widower of Martha Land Redding, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Floyd C. and Pauline Schyler Redding. He was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church, and worked for Sonoco for 40 years as a print shop supervisor.
Surviving are his daughters and sons–in–law, Cindy and Chuck Myer of Columbia, Becky and Steve Cobb of Union; daughter–in–law, Kaye Redding of Hartsville; and grandchildren, Stephanie Myer, Sara Myer, Rick Myer, Michael Cobb, Drew Redding and Jacob Redding. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Redding.
DEBRA SCARLETT
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Debra Ann Kelley Scarlett, 35, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 21, 2002, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Scarlett died Sunday, Aug. 18, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Fort Hood, Texas , a daughter of Samuel Lee and Erika Meisel Kelly. She was a housewife, mother of Corey and wife of Sam Scarlett. She was a member of Family Worship Center.
Surviving, in addition to her parents of Darlington, are her husband, Samuel R. Scarlett; son, Corey Alexander Scarlett; brother, Raymond (Coleen) Kelly; two sisters, Linda (Robert) Tomlinson and Cindy (Kevin) Davis, all of Darlington.

LAURIE PLAYER
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Laurie “Porky” T. Player, 74, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Player died Sunday, Aug. 18. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Robert Dozier and Kizzie Lemmons Player. He was one of 10 children — including five brothers who served in the military during the same period. He served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Player was the owner and operator of Player Grocery and a member of Temple Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving is one sister, Levon P. Kelley of Darlington.
Mr. Player was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Player.

CHARLES HAWKINS
Charles Hawkins, 85, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at his residence after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
BARRY E. SMITH
WASHINGTON, Ga. — Funeral services for Barry Edward Smith, 37, were held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at the First Baptist Church, Washington , Ga., with Dr. John M. Childers and the Rev. Chris Townsend officiating. Graveside services with full Masonic rites were held at Resthaven Cemetery, directed by Hopkins Funeral Home of Washington , Ga.
Mr. Smith died Monday, Aug. 12, at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas . He was a native and lifelong resident of Wilkes County and was the son of George Edward Smith and June C. Smith of Washington , Ga. and son–in–law of Al and Jackie Perry of Hartsville. He was a self–employed logger and a member of the First Baptist Church in Washington , Ga. Mr. Smith was a Mason and member of Lafayette Lodge No. 23, and the Yaarab Temple in Atlanta.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Krista Perry Smith, formerly of Hartsville and graduate of HHS class of 1983; two sons, Ben Smith and Zachary Smith; a daughter, Kirby Smith, all of Washington , Ga.; a brother, Scott Smith of Washington ; a sister, Tammy Griffin of Clayton, Ga.; and his maternal grandmother, Hazel Combs of Crawfordville, Ga.
Pallbearers were Jeff Treadwell, Jeff Hackney, Ken Bufford, Chris Townsend, Darrell Rogers and Greg Rogers.
Honorary pallbearers were Masons, and members of the Kiwanis Club and the Pauline Hopkins Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church.

IRENE L. NEWMAN
OLANTA — Funeral services for Irene Raines Lane Newman, 79, were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home in Lamar with interment following in Lamar Cemetery.
Mrs. Newman died at her home on Thursday, Aug. 15. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Willie E. and Essie Irene Broome Raines. She was married to the late J. B. “Red” Lane and the late J. Wilson Newman. She moved to Kershaw from Lamar in 1966 and retired after 19 years from Dixie Cup. Mrs. Newman was a housewife and had retired to the Beaver Creek area of Lake Wateree. She was Baptist by faith.
Surviving are one son, Ronnie (Vickie) Lane of Evergreen; step–son, Travis (Lucy) Newman of Lugoff; two daughters, Lynette Maloch and Jamie (Warren) Coker, both of Olanta; step–daughters, Linda (Butch) Carter and Cindy (David) Kennington, both of Lancaster; one brother, Edwin Raines of Hartsville; 13 grandchildren; 12 great–grandchildren and one great–grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Blackmon; a brother, Frank Raines and step–daughter, Ann Newman Cauthen.
