JERRY BLACK
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Jerry Black, 43, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Aug. 7, 2002, at Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. E. B. Burroughs, pastor, and the Rev. R. D. Muldrow officiating. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Mr. Black died Friday, Aug. 2, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Derby, Conn., a son of Mae Bell Samuel Black and the late Sam "Buddy" Black. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools, graduating from St. John's High School, class of 1976. He furthered his education at Denmark Technical College, the University of Boston and Florence-Darlington Technical College. He was a life member of Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Mae Bell Black of the home; two daughters, Angel Black of Conway and Cierra Black of Darlington; brothers and sisters, Rochelle (Cynthia) Black, Terry (Eunice) Black, Joanne (Carey) Williamson, all of Darlington, Josephine Black- Washington of the home, Mae Helen (Melvin) Pouncey of Hartsville and Sammie Lee Samuel of Gurthie, Okla.; several aunts and uncles; nieces and nephews (special nieces and nephews he helped rear) Tonetha Washington , Myshinya Dubose, Carey and Fulton Williamson; and a host of cousins.
The family is receiving friends at the home of his mother, 824 McCown Mill Pond Rd., Darlington.
JOHN W. ROGERS
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for John Wesley Rogers, 70, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Aug. 7, 2002, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Rogers died Monday, Aug. 5, at a Florence hospital. He was born in Darlington, a son of the late John N. and Rosa Lee Courtney Rogers. He was a retired insurance agent for Bankers Life and Casualty Co. and was a member of the South Carolina National Guard. Mr. Rogers was a husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Surviving are his wife, Ila Rea Johnson Rogers of Darlington; three sons, Stephen "Stevie" (Kris) Rogers of St. Louis, Mo., Timothy Wayne "Timmy" Rogers and John Christopher "Chris" Rogers, both of Darlington; one daughter, Rachel Lynn R. Lumetta of Clover; six grandchildren; two sisters, Gwendolyn (Boyd) Anderson of Darlington and Loretta Harbuck of Americus, Ga.; also nieces and nephews.
Mr. Rogers was preceded in death by a brother, Warren Arthur Rogers.
BILL BLACKMON
Bill Blackmon, 102, formerly of McBee, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, in Faith Health Care Center in Florence after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
PATRICK R. BUTLER
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Patrick Riley Butler, 42, were held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, in Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.
Mr. Butler died Friday, Aug. 2. He was born in Dillon County and was the son of the late Lacy Wallace and Evelyn Diane McPhatter Butler, as well as his late foster mother, Macie Allred. He was a carpenter by trade and enjoyed motorcycle riding, fishing and NASCAR racing. Mr. Butler previously coached Little League baseball in Darlington and was known to be a history buff.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Jane Collins Butler of the home; two sons, Cheyenne Butler and Raymond Butler, both of Darlington; one daughter, Chasity (Tony) Alfred Glover of High Point, N.C.; three brothers, Sammy (Kim) Richardson of Mullins, Jimmy (Michelle) Richardson of Galivants Ferry and Buddy (Ruby) Butler of Memphis, Tenn.; three sisters, Ellen (Kenny) Larimore of Darlington, Bobbie Jean Eisenhower of Summerville and Diane (William) King of Hartsville; one sister-in-law, Betty Butler of Florida; and one grandchild, McKenzie Glover.
ETHEL H. BROWN
Funeral services for Ethel Hoffman Brown, 78, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Burial was in Westview Memorial Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Brown, widow of Charles E. Brown Sr., died Sunday, Aug. 4. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Boman and Nancy Odom Hoffman. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and was retired from Sonoco Products Co.
Surviving are two sons, Charles E. Brown Jr. of Hartsville and Mark V. Brown of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Mildred Marshall of Bishopville; two brothers, Jake and B. A.Hoffman of Hartsville; and four grandchildren, Jennifer and Lauren Brown and Brandon Todd Brown, all of Atlanta, Ga., and Charles E. Brown III of Pickens.

MARGARET KOON
DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Margaret Sims Koon, 75, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Koon died Thursday, Aug. 1, after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Vernon Pressley and Wilma Rhodes Sims. She was married to the late Jesse Walker Koon and then to the late James Edward Koon. She was a housewife and a retired nursing assisting of Morrell Convalescent Center. Mrs. Koon was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church and of the Adult Women's Sunday School Class.
Surviving are four daughters, Maree K. Smith of Wilmington, N.C., Carol K. (Gene) Hewitt of Florence, Phebe K. (Hugh) Holcombe, all of Hartsville, and Lynn Koon of Greenville; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vera Strickland and Lillian Williams, both of Darlington; four brothers, Edward Sims of Hartsville, Fred Sims of Norfolk, Va.; W. J. Sims and James Sims, both of Darlington.

JAMES L. HUTCHINSON
Funeral services for James L. Hutchinson, 71, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Aug. 7, 2002, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Charlotte Walters and Dr. Richard Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
Mr. Hutchinson died Monday, Aug. 5. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late John Charles and Ellen Gainey Hutchinson. He was owner of Hutchinson Paint Contractors, a veteran of the Korean War and a lifetime member of the DAV Chapter 72.
Surviving are brother, James Grover Hutchinson of Hartsville; four sisters, Maggie Howle, Katherine Rivers, Lenelle Anderson, all of Hartsville, and Louise Pritchard of McBee; four step-sons, Ben and James McInnis of Hartsville, Donnie McInnis of Savannah, Ga., and Richard McInnis of Johnsonville; special friend, Sue Boswell of Chesterfield; special nieces, Shelley Marshall and Morgan Marshall; four grandchildren, Nicole A. Graveside services for Cornelius "Bobby" Gainey, Jr., 59, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, in Tabernacle United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Hazel Mixon officiated with Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Gainey died Friday, August 2, 2002. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Cornelius and Maggie Dixon Gainey.
Surviving are his wife, Agnes Sheffield Gainey of Hartsville; son, Roger Gainey of Patrick; daughters and son-in-law, Sherry Welch of Hartsville, Denise and Jeff Cooke of Hamlet, N.C.; step-sons, Merrill Sheffield of Darlington, William Sheffield of Hartsville; step-daughter, Diane Wilkes of Hartsville; brothers, Ray Gainey of Hartsville, Tom Gainey of McBee; sister, Frances Weatherford of McBee; six grandchildren; one great grandchild.
