WALTER E. CARTER JR.
LAMAR – Graveside funeral services for Walter Earl "Bud" Carter Jr., 68, were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, in Lamar Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Carter died Tuesday, Feb. 12, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, the son of Edelle King Carter and the late Walter Earl Carter. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked in banking for a number of years. Mr. Carter was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church and was an active bridge and tennis player.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Lamar are his wife, Sylvia Lewis Carter of the home; two sons, Mark Carter of Florence and Scott Carter of Lamar; a daughter, Mrs. Dan (Carla) Mann of Florence; three grandchildren, Megan Carter, Matthew Carter and Kirsten Mann; and two sisters, Mrs. John (Joanne) McKissick of Summerville and Mrs. Marvin (Linda) Slaughter of Florence.

JOHNNIE McNEIL SR.
LAMAR – Funeral services for Johnnie McNeil Sr. were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at the Church of Christ in Lamar. Burial was in Plaza Memorial Gardens with professional services provided by Hines Funeral Home of Lamar.
Mr. McNeil died Saturday, Feb. 9. He was born in the Lamar community, one of four children of the late Dan and Almeta Lucas McNeil. He worked at Spaulding Elementary School for 15 years. After leaving Spaulding, he worked as a school crossing guard for several years. Mr. McNeil was a lifetime member of Church of Christ where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include a daughter, Nettie (Richard) McQuillar of Effingham; three sons, Johnnie (Louise) McNeil Jr., and Earl (Lena) McNeil, both of Lamar, and Willie (Nadine) Evan of Silver Springs, Md.; a sister, Elizabeth Mingo of Carthage, N.C.; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
ROSA BELL BENNETT
Funeral services for Rosa Bell Bennett will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church. Burial will take place in Greenlawn Cemetery with professional services provided by Hines Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bennett died Tuesday, Feb. 12. She was born in the Bishopville farming community. She was one of 14 children of the late Harmon and Carrie Timmons Black. Mrs. Bennett was first married to the late Abraham Richardson Sr. From this union two children were born. After his death, she was married to the late Willie James Bennett in 1950. From this union seven children were born. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the senior and gospel choir.
Survivors include six sons, Abraham Richardson, Alphonso (Norma Jean) Richardson and Willie Bennett, all of Hartsville, James (Janie) Bennett and Bobby (Cleo) Bennett, both of Baltimore, Md., and Charles Bennett of Sumter; three daughters, Bernice Bennett of Rock Hill, Bernice Bennett and Denise Bennett, both of Hartsville.
ROBERT W. JACKSON
Funeral services for Robert Wayne Jackson, 60, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, in New Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, directed by Young Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Jackson died Monday, Feb. 11, at his residence. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Loucious and Della Ketter Jackson. He received his education in Darlington County public schools and attended New Hopewell Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Jacquline Townsend Jackson of Hartsville; two sisters, Alline (Harold) Horton of Baltimore, Md., and Lucille (Henry) Ellis of Hartsville; a brother, Willie James (Mable) Ketter of Hartsville; 12 grandchildren; a step-daughter, Lind (Vern) Smith of Hartsville; three step-sons, Jason (Michelle) Ross, Edward Ross and John Townsend; and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
KENNETH CAMPBELL
WATERBURY, Conn. – Kenneth Campbell, son of Harold and Clara Campbell, formerly of Society Hill, died in Waterbury, Conn. on Saturday, Feb. 9, after an illness. He was a nephew of Mrs. Lala Douglas of Society Hill. Local arrangements will announced by Hines Funeral Home.
WARREN E. JOHNSON
Funeral services for Warren Elmore "W. E." Johnson, 78, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Kellytown Baptist Church. The Revs. Gary Anderson and Lawrence Garrett officiated with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Kellytown Baptist Church Youth and Music Ministry.
Mr. Johnson died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Ike and Pearl Easterling Johnson. He was a member and deacon of Kellytown Baptist Church. He was retired from J. L. Coker & Co. and Kendall Mills and was an avid sports fan.
Surviving are his wife, Lucy Hough Johnson of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Wayne Clanton of Griffin, Ga.; grandsons and spouse, Matthew Clanton, Bryan and Lisa Clanton, all of Griffin, Ga.; sisters, Sarah Edmonston of Bel Aire, Md., Lib Honeycutt of Concord, N.C., Myrtle Gainey of Hartsville; sisters-in-law, Quin Johnson of Hartsville, and Floreet Johnson of Monroe, N.C. He was predeceased by his brothers, William Ike Johnson and Darrell Johnson.
VIDA WILES
Funeral services for Vida Bochette Wiles, 85, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Wiles, widow of Oliver Wiles, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Moody and Lula Blackmon Bochette.
Surviving are nephews, Jim Oliver and Lawrence Oliver, both of Summerton, S.C.; nieces, Jean Byrd of McBee, Yvonne Gannett of Columbia, and Irene Morrison of Hartsville.
EARL WINGATE
Funeral services for William Earl Wingate will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 15, 2002, at the Church of Christ of Lamar. Burial will take place in St. John United Methodist Church Cemetery with professional services provided by Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. Wingate died Monday, Feb. 11. He was born in the rural community of Darlington County. He was one of 13 children of the late Jackson and Sammie Kelly Wingate. Mr. Wingate was first a member of St. John United Methodist Church. He was married to the late Ada Bell Johnson Wingate and together they became members of the Church of Christ of Lamar.
Survivors include four sisters, Emily Mayshack of Hartsville, Wilhelmina Coleman of Jamaica, N.Y., Ruth Graham of New York, N.Y., and Sammie Allen of Dayton, Ohio.; four brothers, Preston (Helen) Wingate and Harmon (Calotis) Wingate, both of Bronx, N.Y., Pervell (Beulah) Wingate of Clinton, Md., and Kelly (Denice) Wingate of Summerville.

Ida Campbell, 87, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, in Morrell Nursing Home after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at Oakview Apartments, B-2, Hartsville.
