SHIRLEY GREEN
Services for Shirley Green were held Saturday, March 16, 2002, at 3 p.m. in The Church In The Lord Jesus Christ Of The Apostolic Faith, Inc. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mrs. Green, 61, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Leon and Louis Frazier Scott. She received her education in the public schools of Darlington County. She was a member of The Church In The Lord Jesus Christ Of The Apostolic Faith, Inc., and worked for many years at the C&L Refreshment Center located in downtown Hartsville.
Surviving are her husband, Boston Green of Hartsville; a son, Bobby Green of Florence; a daughter, Sharon G. Toney of Hartsville; and two grand-children.
JANE M. DENNIS
DARLINGTON – Jane McKinnon Dennis, 87, died Sunday evening in a local nursing home after an extended illness. Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2002, in Grove Hill Cemetery, officiated by Dr. Todd Jones and the Rev. Tim Rogers and directed by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mrs. Dennis was born in Brunswick, Ga., the daughter of the late Mortimer Lacy and Mary Hill McKinnon. She was married to the late Judge Edward Colgate Dennis Jr. Mrs. Dennis attended Coker College and was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a bachelor of fine arts degree. She was the President of Phi Mu Sorority while in college. Mrs. Dennis taught grammar in the Bishopville schools and was an art teacher in the Darlington schools. She was an original member of the Pirates Club at Sea Island. She was baptized in the Presbyterian Church and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since her marriage in 1938.
Surviving are a son, Edward Colgate "Chip" Dennis III and his wife, Ann, of Darlington; a daughter, Lacy Dennis Chapman and her husband, Rob, of Spartanburg; one grandson, Edward C. "Pete" Dennis IV and his wife, Judy, of Darlington; three granddaughters, Bess Dennis Harry and her husband, Brice, of Conway, Dennis Hill Chapman of Greenville, and Jane Harrison Chapman of Spartanburg; and one great-granddaughter, Laurel Ann Dennis of Darlington.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.
ELBERT JAMES
Funeral services for Elbert Coleman James, 83, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Piney Plains Free Will Baptist Church. The Rev. Gary Allen Mathis officiated with burial in Piney Plains Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mr. James died Thursday, March 7, 2002. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Eli and Theodocia Harrell James. He was a former employee of the Hartsville Print and Dye works, and retired from Nytronics of Darlington.
Surviving are his wife, Sallie O'Neal James of Hartsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles E. James of Hartsville, W. Coker James of Hartsville, Ronnie D. and Stephanie James of Hartsville, Ricky A. and Joan James of Hartsville.; daughters and sons-in-law, Rosa Lee Fales of Hartsville, Francis and Archie Wilkes of Hartsville, Helen and Harry Mathis of Dovesville, Betty Catherine "Bennie Lou" and Harvey Teal of Hartsville, Shirley D. and James Earl Hodges of Hartsville, Teresa J. and James Shaw of Hartsville; brother, Ben James of Lamar; 43 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren. His son and daughter, Carson and Voncille James, predeceased him.
JOYSIE BLAKNEY
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Joysie Blakney, formerly of Hartsville, brother of Mrs. Berthel Williams and Mrs. Margaret Bryant of Hartsville, died on Wednesday, March 6, in Philadelphia after an illness. Hines Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
DOLLY WILSON
BISHOPVILLE – Funeral services for Dolly Mae McCathern Wilson, 65, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2002, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Billy Melton officiated with burial in Concord Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Wilson, widow of Ernest A. McCathern, died Friday, March 8. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Roxie Hill Euten.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Karen McCathern of Lugoff; daughters and sons-in-law, Ernestine and Michael Burcham of Lucknow, Linda and Charlie Gainey of Hartsville, Sarah LeMacks of Turkey Creek; sisters, Daisey Clark, Mary Lee Matuse and Derby Euten, all of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
WILLIE KENNEDY
DARLINGTON – Funeral services for Willie Kennedy were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2002, in New Hopewell Baptist Church with the Rev. Calvin Daniels, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.
Mr. Kennedy died Thursday, March 7, in the VA Medical Center in Columbia after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Henry and Lula Scott Kennedy. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged. After discharge from the military, he moved to Patterson, N.J., where he met and married Nettie Richardson. He worked as an automobile mechanic. He first was a member of the New Hopewell Baptist Church and later joined the Shining Light Holiness Church of Darlington. He served as a deacon in Shining Light Holiness Church.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Nettie Kennedy, of the home, are two daughters, Marilyn Elaine Kennedy-Grayson of Darlington and Mary Lee Mack of Hartsville; a son, Darryl (Frandolyn) Kennedy of Rock Hill; a sister, Elizabeth (Clyde) Dixon of Hartsville; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and former wife, Rosa Mae Kennedy of Hartsville.
VERLINE M. CALIVAS
FLORENCE – Graveside services for Verline Moody Calivas, 76, will be held at 2 p.m. today, March 15, 2002, in the Mechanicsville Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mrs. Calivas died Wednesday morning, March 13. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Claude Moody and Annie Mae Cook Moody. She retired from Dixie Cup after 34 years of service and attended the Mechanicsville Baptist Church. She was a very thoughtful and unselfish woman who was very dedicated to her family.
Surviving are one daughter, Linda (Lewis) Perkins of Summerton; two sons, Billy T. (Dena) Calivas of Orange Park, Fla., and Michael L. Calivas of Lamar; two sisters, Carolyn (Arthur) Gandy and Lillie Mae Moore, both of Darlington; two brothers, Laverne (Mary) Moody and Carl (Vivian) Moody both of Darlington; four grandchildren, Kathy C. Stone, Susan Fields, Chantell Calivas, Brent Calivas; four great-grandchildren, Chris Dickerson, Curtis Dickerson, Christina Raley and Jonathan Odom.

ROBERT LEE SMITH
SOCIETY HILL – Funeral services for Robert Lee Smith, 60, will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 15, 2002, at Mt. Rona Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Robinson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mr. Smith died Sunday, March 10, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Albert and Carrie Bacote Smith. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools, graduating from Rosenwald High School, Class of 1961. He continued his education at Vorhees Trade School in Denmark. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged. He worked as a carpenter and brick mason contractor.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Ann (Lonnie) Samuel of Columbia and Ms. Elease Smith of Bronx, N.Y.; step-sister, Mrs. Lila Mae (John) Douglas of Society Hill; one brother, Albert Smith Jr. of Waterbury, Conn.; nieces, nephews and a host of cousins; special friends, Ann Carter of Georgia and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Poe and family of Cheraw.
The family is receiving friends at the home of a niece, Dorothy Smith of 4124 Society Hill Road, Society Hill.
