GENEVA JAMES
Geneva James, widow of Russell James, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 27, 1906, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Harvin and Eliza Weary.
Mrs. James was reared in a Christian environment and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and joined Congruity Presbyterian Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the Presbyterian Women’s Organization.
She was a member of the Job and Joint Stock Lodge.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth McFadden and Doretha Durant-Anderson, both of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Frances Sanders of Temple Hill, Md.; an adopted son, Robert Harvin of Paterson, N.J.; an adopted daughter, Judith Wilder of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sisters, Bessie Jones and Elizabeth Wilder, both of Philadelphia; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a stepson, Frank James; a brother, Thomas Harvin; and two sisters, Louise Brunson and Octavia Ford.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Congruity Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, moderator, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dennis Brock.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 3 p.m.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1866 Fletcher Drive. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
CLAYTON LOWDER SR.
Clayton Lowder Sr., 84, husband of Madelyn K. Lowder, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 9, 1914, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Thomas Junious and Alice Tindal Lowder.
Mr. Lowder was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sumter.
He was self-employed as a well known farmer and businessman, which included a cotton gin, a farm supply business and grocery store.
He was captain of his football team his senior year at Edmunds High School.
He is survived by his wife, Madelyn K. Lowder; four children from his first marriage to the late Jho Eleanor Player Lowder, two sons, Clayton Lowder Jr. and Jimmy Lowder, both of Sumter, and two daughters, Alice Lowder Robertson and Betty Jho Lowder, both of Sumter; also two sons of another marriage, Michael Lowder and Steven M. Lowder; a brother, Leon Clyde Lowder of Eastover; three sisters, Jessie Mae Lowder Michaels of Dayton, Ohio, Corrine Lowder Dukes of Manning and Virginia Lowder Shade of Sumter; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Tindal Lowder, McLaurin Lowder, T.M. “Marion” Lowder and Carl Lowder; and two sisters, Gertrude Lowder Childers and Lydia Lowder Barwick. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John C. Ropp Jr. officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dr. Clay Lowder, Milton Lowder, Jim Lowder, Jay Rowland, Richard Hilton, Tony Outlaw, Rhode Cherry, Garland Hobgood and John Bramlett.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Hugh Stoddard, Dr. Phil Brandt, Dr. Lee Givens, Dr. Jerry Jackson and Truman Hooper.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Lowder, 2145 Cory Road.

ROBERT H. PHILLIPS
Robert H. Phillips, 71, husband of Willie Mae Walker Phillips, formerly of Baltimore, Md., and Chincoteague, Va., died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Baltimore City, Md., he was a son of the late Charles H. Phillips and Alma Watson Phillips Roberts.
Mr. Phillips was retired from Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. with 40 years of service.
He was a member of the Church of God in Pocomoke, Md.
Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Robert Phillips Jr. of Fairmont, W.Va.; three daughters, Anjelica Phillips of Sumter, Susan Phillips of Florida and Alma Jean Phillips of Fairmont; three stepsons, Adam Johnson of Seattle, Wash., John Springfield, stationed in Korea, and Walter Springfield of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Mary Larche of Sumter; and a number of grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Hubbard Funeral Home in Baltimore, Md.
Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Richie Highway, Baltimore.

JULIA M. THOMPSON
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Julia Mae Thompson, widow of Deacon Willie Thompson, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Windsor House Nursing Facility.
Born July 26, 1910, in Jordan, S.C., she was a daughter of the late William and Katie Lee Conyers.
Mrs. Thompson attended school in Clarendon County, S.C., and in her youth confessed Christ and joined Holly Hill Baptist Church.
Later she moved to Sumter, S.C., and joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. B.F. Weston.
She served faithfully as a member of the deaconess board, missionary society and prayer band.
She was selected as Jehovah’s Woman of the Year in 1961.
She moved to Jersey City, N.J., in 1963 and joined Saint John Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. B. F. Johnson.
She relocated to Huntsville, Ala., in 1982 after the death of her husband.
The Rev. Dr. Homer McCall of St. John AME Church served as her pastor during her later years.
She was a caregiver to all in need and managed Canderella Restaurant for many years.
Survivors include two daughters, Willie M. Heyward of Huntsville and Elease Johnson of Newark, N.J.; three foster daughters, Louise Pearson of Baltimore, Bessie Dease of Washington , D.C., and Dorothy Clark of Jersey City, N.J.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robert Groves and Minister Irene Anthony.
Burial will be in Walker Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m.
The family will receive friends at the home of Pearl James, 226 Palmetto St., Sumter.

HARMON C. TURNER
LYNCHBURG — Harmon C. “Hop” Turner, 62, husband of Phebe Floyd Turner, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of Harmon N. Turner and the late Lottie Brewer Turner.
Mr. Turner was a member of Calvary Nazarene Church and attended Trinity Methodist Church.
He was retired from Superior Machine Company in Florence.
Survivors besides his wife of Lynchburg and his father and stepmother, Madge Turner, of Paxville include a son, Dennis Elmore of Lynchburg; two daughters, Lisa Turner of Lynchburg and Phyllis Camlin of Brandon, Fla.; four brothers, Claude Turner, Raymond Turner, Troy Turner and Charles Turner, all of Sumter; four sisters, Edna Mae Stegner, Daisy Kirkpatrick and Lucille Austin, all of Sumter, and Rebecca Burke of Hookerton, N.C.; three grandchildren; two stepbrothers, Robert Lawrence and Ernest Lawrence, both of Atlanta, Ga.; and two stepsisters, Lois Ann Caughman of Sumter and Jeanette Morgan of Wilmington, N.C.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard H. Turner; and a sister, Berlether Turner.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home in Sumter with the Rev. Jim Ridenhour and the Rev. G.W. Harrell officiating.
Burial will be in Bethany Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Olanta.
Pallbearers will be nephews and a brother-in-law.

LAKE CITY — Carrie Jones McCown, 87, widow of Tom McCown, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.
She was born March 7, 1912, in Florence County.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Robert “Wayne” McCown, 528 W. Independence Ave., Lake City.

CAMDEN — Riley Joseph Bryant, 51, husband of Patsy Lynn Johnson Bryant, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia.
Born Aug. 18, 1948, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Robert Edward Bryant and Viola Mitchum Bryant.
Mr. Bryant was owner and operator of Tile Works in Greenwood, a Vietnam War U.S. Army veteran, and a member of First Baptist Church of Camden.
Survivors besides his wife of Camden include two daughters, Cristal B. Gootee of Batesburg and Ami Marie Bryant of Camden; a brother, Raymond Bryant of Greenwood; and three sisters, Sallie Bartlett of Coward, Betsy Smith of Charleston and Joyce Collingsworth of Apollo Beach, Fla.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Lavaughn Young and the Rev. Bruce Hancock officiating.
Burial will be in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.

BISHOPVILLE — Eva Cooper, 88, widow of Moses Cooper Sr., died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, in Philadelphia, Pa.
Born and reared in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late John and Lucy Brown.
Mrs. Cooper attended the public schools of Lee County.
Survivors include two sons, Moses Cooper Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa., and Leo Cooper of Columbia; two daughters, Mary Lou Slater of Bishopville and Annie Lee Bradley of Philadelphia, Pa.; a special sister, Ruth Charles of Bishopville; and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Square Deal Funeral Home with the Rev. Rodney James officiating, assisted by some ministers from the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Burial will be in the Thomastown Cemetery.
