Pearle W. Scott
COLUMBIA — Homegoing services for Pearle W. Scott, widow of Lewis Scott, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home with burial in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Gadsden. Born in Gadsden to Harry and Annie B. Smith Williams, she died May 24, 2005. Surviving are sister, Ethel W. Lloyd; niece, Kathryn Croft; nephew, Leon Lloyd; Leon Scott, reared as a son.
Thomas Rutherford
BEAUFORT — Thomas Croft Rutherford, 75, died May 24th in his Beaufort, SC, home, after a short illness. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, 27th, at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church, Beaufort. Copeland Funeral Home is in charge.
Tom was born in Columbia, SC, to William Thomas Rutherford and Martha Russell Williams Rutherford. He spent his early childhood in New York City, later attending Schneider Elementary and Dreher High schools in Columbia. He obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of South Carolina. Tom worked for Westvaco and in Marine Fisheries in the Charleston area, then in 1959 he went to VPI in Blacksburg, VA, where he obtained a Ph.D. and married a co-student from England. He taught Biology in colleges in North Carolina, Liberia, Ghana, England, and Lesotho. Tom retired in 1990, partially disabled by Cerebellar Ataxia, settling first in England, then in Hartsville, SC, and finally back to his beloved marshes of the Low Country.
Tom was a member of the National Ataxia Foundation and headed the South Carolina support group. In Hartsville he was an active member of P.A.L.S., a support group for disabled and terminally ill. His family and friends will remember him for his lively playing of the harmonica, banjo and concertina, and for his love of scholarly argument.
He is survived by his wife Janet, daughters Carrie, Doryam and Becky, son Charles, granddaughters Ruth and Louisa, and cousins Ned, Peggy, Martha and Croft.

Jesse A. Chavis
AIKEN — Jesse A. Chavis, 71, of Aiken, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 28, 2005, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church near North with Rev. Steve Chavous officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 12 noon.
Mr. Chavis was born in Orangeburg County, a son of the late Rudolph and Mary Ellen Skipper Chavis. He was an Army veteran of Korea and was a retired carpenter.
Survivors include four sons: Larry Covington, of El Dorado Hills, CA; Randy Chavis and Chris Chavis, both of Windsor; and John Chavis, of New Ellenton; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters: Evelean Williams, of North Augusta; Nellie Branham and Jenny Clark, both of Columbia; and Shirley Lucas, of Gaston; three brothers: Jack Chavis and Rudy Chavis, both of West Palm Beach, FL; and Roger Chavis, of Swansea.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday and from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North.
Genevieve Roche

Mrs. Roche, widow of Leo A. Roche, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005. Born in Kittaning, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Josephine K. Guzenski. She was owner/operator of Leo’s of Lugoff, LTD. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.
Surviving are son, Richard Selzler of Irmo; daughter, Susan Roche Reen Bishop of Lancaster; son, Rick Roche of Seattle, WA; 11 grandchildren; 2 great-grandsons; sisters, Helen Greene of Tonawanda, NY, Eleanor Verne of Lugoff; brother, Edward Guzenski of Towanda, NY. She was predeceased by a son, David Roche, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.
E.H.P. “Ed” Miller Jr.
COLUMBIA — Services for E.H.P. “Ed” Miller, Jr., 82, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2005, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 525 St. Andrews Road, with entombment to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. Mr. Miller died Tuesday, May 24, 2005. Born in Savannah, GA, he was the son of the late E.H.P. Miller, Sr. and Connie Ruth McGrady Miller. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and retired from the United States Army and Air Force Exchange Service. Mr. Miller was a member of Masonic Lodge #402. He was a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner with the Jamil Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Helen P. Miller; sons, E.H.P. “Ronnie” Miller, III and wife, Susie Eppes, Donald J. Miller, all of Columbia, William P. Miller and wife, Kelly D. Miller, of Atlanta; brother, Joseph R. Miller and wife, Becky V. Miller, of Orangeburg, sister, Cynthia Miller Roach and the late Harold Roach; grandchildren, Helen Natalie Singleton, Kevin L. Miller, Courtney L. Miller, William P. Miller, Jr., Brittany Rae Miller, Madison Elizabeth Miller; three great grandchildren.
Larry Hewitt
MULLINS — Larry Blake “Tiny” Hewitt, age 58, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at his residence. He was the son of the late Napoleon and Lula Pridgen Hewitt. He was predeceased by two brothers, Reuben Elliott Hewitt and Jimmy Hewitt, and one sister, Ann H. Nance.
Mr. Hewitt is survived by his wife, Irene Hewitt of Mullins; one son, Wayne Hewitt of Mullins; one daughter, Kim Pate of Coats, N.C.; two brothers, Bobby Hewitt of Fair Bluff, N.C., and Wade Hewitt of Chadbourn, N.C.; three sisters, Betty H. Bullock of Sumter, S.C., Kay Carteret of Fair Bluff, N.C., and Leona H. Ward of Hallsboro, N.C.; three granddaughters, Kirstyn Champion, Emily Pate and Franki Lynn Pate.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, May 26, at 3 p.m. at Meares Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Calvary Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Nichols, S.C. Meares Funeral Home of Mullins is honored to served the family of Mr. Hewitt.
James Moore
CHESTERFIELD — Mr. James Thomas Moore, 83, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005. Funeral is 3 p.m. Saturday, May 28, 2005, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with burial in Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will follow the graveside service in the Friendship United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Mr. Moore was born in Anson County, N.C., a son of the late Lee P. and Elizabeth Smith Moore. He was a retired Supervisor with J.P. Stevens, a farmer and a former owner and operator of T&C Grocery. Mr. Moore was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He was preceded in death by his son, James Riley Moore and by his daughter, Elizabeth Moore Swink.
Survivors: his wife of 63 years, Margaret Stroud Moore of the home; granddaughters, Marti M. Perry and husband, Bryan, of Marshville, N.C., Sara Moore Mackiewicz and husband, Brad, of Charlotte, N.C., Jasa M. Johnson and husband, Steve, of Ruby, S.C., and Jacki H. Mr. Epting died Monday, May 23, 2005. Born in Charlotte, N.C., he was the son of the late Carl Virgil and Emma Purdy Epting. A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, he worked as an accountant in various places. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Pomaria.
Surviving are his wife of forty-eight years, Patricia Hayes Epting. He was predeceased by his son, Ronald Virgil Epting, Jr.

GASTON — Funeral service for Ruth Sharpe Parfitt, 66, will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel, with interment to follow in the Sharpe Family Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. After the funeral, the family will receive friends at the home of Michael and Michelle Farmer, 142 Lantern Hill Circle, Lexington.
Mrs. Parfitt died Tuesday, May 24, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late George H. and Myrtle McVey Sharpe. She worked in the Computer Service Department at the University of South Carolina until her retirement.
Surviving are sons John Farmer, Jr., of Columbia, Robert Farmer of Columbia, Michael Farmer of Lexington, Richard Farmer of Sumter, and Brian Evans of Gaston; a sister Deborah Joyner of Charleston; a brother Dennis Sharpe of Jasper, Ala.; five grandchildren.
Maybelle Wright
PROSPERITY — Maybelle Kinard Wright, 101, of 917 South Main Street, Prosperity, widow of Clayton S. Wright, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, in Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Wright was born on November 23, 1903, in Pomaria, a daughter of the late of Dantzler L. and Mary Alice Koon Kinard. She was the oldest member of Wightman United Methodist Church, Pearl Counts Circle, and the United Methodist Women. She was a World War I widow. She was a former employee of the US Naval Accounting Office in Charleston, S.C., and a retired employee of Prosperity Manufacturing Company.
Mrs. Wright is survived by a daughter, Voris W. Bowers of Prosperity; a brother, John Kinard of Chapin; two granddaughters, Barbara B. Morris and Martha B. Waller, both of Prosperity; two great-grandsons, Terry A. Morris and Randel (Ron) S. Abrams, Jr., both of Prosperity; three great-great-grandchildren, Michael A. Morris, Elijah D. Abrams, and Olivia Grace Abrams. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Bundrick and Lurlene Graham; three brothers, Joe W. Kinard, Colie B. Kinard and Virgil D. Kinard.
Funeral services for Maybelle Kinard Wright will be conducted at 3 P.M. Friday at Wightman United Methodist Church by the Rev. Eddie Taylor. Interment will be in Prosperity Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will at the residence of Voris W. Bowers, 9437 Macedonia Church Road, Prosperity.
