William F. Stroman
WEST COLUMBIA — Services for William F. (Bill) Stroman, 73, will be held at 2pm Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at Platt Springs United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Mary V. Teasley, with burial in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Monday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia.
Mr. Stroman died Saturday, April 30, 2005. Born in Woodford, SC, he was the son of the late William F. Stroman, Sr. and Goldie Hildebrand Stroman. After attending American University in Washington , D.C., Mr. Stroman was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had retired from the South Carolina Employment Security Commission after 40 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Suzanne H. Stroman; daughter and son-in-law, Courtney Elizabeth and Michael David Hutchins; grandson, Mills Stroman Hutchins; granddaughter, Elizabeth Elliott Hutchins; sister, Rae S. Jones and brother-in-law, Jasper D. Jones; brother, Walter P. Stroman and sister-in-law, Dancy M. Stroman; and several nieces and nephews. FLORENCE — Services with burial for Mattie Durant McDonald, 91, widow of Clara McDonald, are 1 p.m. (viewing noon) Tuesday at St. Paul UMC, Wysacky. Job’s Mortuary is in charge. Born in Elliott to Robert and Sarah Durant, she died April 28, 2005. Surviving are children, Rebecca Anderson, Lee Mack, Mattie Bennett, Ruth Benjamin, Nancy Knott, Sarah, E.W., Edgar McDonald, Dorothy Pickett; others.
Murrell Smith
LEESVILLE — Murrell “Papa” Smith, 71, funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at Pine Grove Baptist Church with interment in church cemetery with Rev. Bill Paulling, Rev. Dennis Metts and Rev. Leo Senn officiating. Pallbearers will be Jay and Jason Massey, Brett and Brandon Padgett, Travas Smith and Andy Burgess.
Mr. Smith died Saturday, April 30, 2005. Born in Batesburg, he was the son of the late Arthur and Carrie Hall Smith. Mr. Smith was a logger and poultry farmer.
Surviving is his wife of 51 years, Mildred Garrick Smith; children, Joyce Padgett and husband, Robbie; Wallace Smith and wife, Patricia all of Batesburg-Leesville; grandchildren, Candi Burgess and husband, Andy; Travas Smith and wife, Monica; Stephanie Massey and husband, Jay; Brett Padgett and wife, Alicia; and Brandon Padgett; great-grandchildren, Diana, Jason and Dylan Massey, Kassidy and Jacob Burgess, Brooke Padgett; brothers, Archie Smith of Monetta; Thyrille Smith of Batesburg; sister, Leconia Allison of Maryland; preceded in death by brothers, M.C. Carrell and Jimmy Smith.

COLUMBIA — Prayer service for MSG Philip B. Murphy, US Army (Ret), 57, will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. MSG Murphy died Saturday, April 30, 2005. He was born in County Cavan, Ireland. He retired in 1986 from the United States Army.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Dubard Murphy; daughters, Jamjurie Murphy of Cross City, Fla. and Sarah Holden of Steinhatchee, Fla.; son, Philip Murphy of Jacksonville, Fla.; step-children, Vincent Hollis of Germany, Angela Hollis of Charlotte, N.C. and Shauna Curley of Atlanta, Ga.; brothers, Terrence Murphy, Johnny Murphy and Joseph Murphy, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; sisters, Margaret Bunting of Delaware, Kathleen Jones of Philadelphia,Pa., Ann Marie Elko of Chester, Pa. and Mary Costigan of Harrisburg, Pa.; eighteen grandchildren; and twenty-one nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bodiford, wife of the late Henry Loyd Bodiford, died Sunday, May 01, 2005. Born in Orangeburg County, she was a daughter of the late Willie Clifton and Pearl Davis. She was a member of Rosewood Baptist Church.
Surviving are son and daughter-in-law,. Clifton D. and Connie Bodiford of Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia B. and George Reeder of West Columbia; sister, Addie Koon of Columbia; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Grace Madison
COLUMBIA — Service for Grace Irene Madison, 81, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in the Memorial Gardens of Columbia. Serving as active pallbearers will be Bobby Murray, Daniel Madison, Donnie Mills, Jasen Maybury, Johnny Outlaw, Todd Boone and John Kingkaid. Memorials may be made to Shandon Baptist Church or the Department of Journalism at USC. Visitation will be Monday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Madison, wife of the late Ralph Madison, died Saturday, April 30, 2005. Born in Humboldt, Kansas, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Jennie Caldwell Delaplain. At the age of sixty-four, she attended USC to major in Journalism and was a member of the Baptist Student Union.
Mrs. Madison was a member of Shandon Baptist Church where she was a longtime Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed writing and gathering with her family.
A beloved mother and grandmother, she is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, Steven and Karen Madison of Lexington and David Madison of West Columbia; daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Don Mills of Columbia, Ruth and Roger Oswalt of Leesville and Treva and Jimmy Tucker of Dayton, Ohio; brothers, Dwight Delaplain of Minnesota and Verle Delaplain of Oregon; sisters, Marie Delaplain of New York, Hazel Lewis and Esther Delaplain, both of Oklahoma; sixteen grandchildren; and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
Canty Hodge
BISHOPVILLE — Canty Labon “Snuffy” Hodge, 79, widower of Florrie Ann Kinder Hodge, died Friday, April 29, 2005 at the Dorn VA Medical Center.
He was born in Clarendon County, a son of the late Canty Labon Hodge, Sr. and the late Bessie Bartlette Hodge on July 14, 1925.
He was a US Army veteran of World War II, a retired welder, and an avid fisherman.
Survivors include a son, William A. “Tony” Hodge and his wife, Sherry of Bishopville; two sisters, Betty H. Hodge of Talladega, AL, and Mattie Jean H. Perry and her husband, Jamey of Sumter, Dona S. Smith and her husband, Fritz of Bishopville, and Kathy S. Cole and her husband, Jimmy of Sumter; eight great-grandchildren; and a score of loving and devoted nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Terry Smith; a son, Timothy Labon Hodge; a grandson, Anthony Hodge; four brothers, Harvey, Herbert, Dewey, Anthony, and Elmo Hodge; and four sisters, Lettie Broadway, Geneva Ball, Dorene King, and Joyce Park.
Funeral services were held at 4 P.M. Sunday in the chapel of Hanock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Glass officiating.
Burial was in the Ashwood Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Hodge.

Lisa Marie Meredith
DANIEL ISLAND — A graveside service for Ms. Lisa M. Meredith, 41, of Daniel Island, will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Ms. Meredith passed away Thursday, April 28, 2005 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born in Washington , DC on October 22, 1963, she was a daughter of the late John Calvin Hogue and Helen Marie Martin Waugh of West Columbia. Ms. Meredith was employed as a waitress at See Wee Restaurant in Charleston and her favorite place to be was on the beach. She was a loving mother, daughter, sister, and friend, who will be deeply missed.
Surviving Ms. Meredith in addition to her mother are her daughter, Hunter Marie Meredith of Chapin; son, Thomas Crayton Meredith IV of Chapin; two sisters, Shelia Ward of Penhook, VA and Pamelia Simpson of Irmo, SC; two brothers, John Hogue of Blythewod and Kenneth “Buddy” Hogue of West Columbia; her ex-husband, Thomas “Tommy” Crayton Meredith III of Chapin and numerous nieces and nephews.
Evoy Hayden
GASTON — Evoy Edwin “Eddie” Hayden, 56, died Thursday, April 28, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Convent Baptist Church with interment in church cemetery with Rev. Bill Padgett officiating.
Mr. Hayden was born in Swansea, S.C., to Dorcas Busbee Hayden and the late Leroy Hayden. He was a self-employed construction worker. He served in the Army.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Howell Hayden; daughter, Candy Hayden of Gaston; sons, Ryan, Chad and T.J. Hayden, all of Gaston; sisters, Rose Norris of Gilbert; Margie Fallaw of Pelion; brother, Anthony Hayden of Swansea; 9 grandchildren.

John Earnhardt
WINNSBORO — A graveside service for John Kesler Earnhardt, 82, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 4th, 2005, in Lebanon Presbyterian Church in America Cemetery, conducted by The Reverend James I. Riley.
Mr. Earnhardt died Wednesday, April 27, 2005. Born January 27, 1923, in Kannapolis, N.C., he had served his country in the United States Army Air Corps and was a member of Lebanon PCA.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Bolick Earnhardt of Ridgeway; sons, Jim Earnhardt of San Jose, California, and Robert Earnhardt of Ft. Pierce, Florida. He was predeceased by a son, John Richard Earnhardt.

Leon Mikell
COLUMBIA — Homegoing Service for Leon Mikell will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home with burial in Serenity Memorial Gardens. Born in St. Matthews to Julius and Ollie McKenzie Mikell, he died April 28, 2005. He had retired from Kilborne Park Baptist Church. Surviving are his children, Gregory and Pilar Mikell; sister, Ernestine Parsons; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
David Cone
CHARLESTON — Mr. David Cone, husband of Lillian Burbage Cone, died Sunday morning in Roper Hospital in Charleston. He was 80.
Mr. Cone was born in Cottageville, January 17, 1925, a son of the late Hampton Cone and Martha Maude Reeves Cone. He attended Carpenter’s Mate School in Melville, RI, and served during WWII as a Carpenter’s Mate 3rd Class with the Command Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB) Squadron of the 7th Fleet stationed in the Tacloban Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. That squadron was the largest MTB squadron in the U.S. Navy’s strategy of “Island Hopping” in the Pacific theater of operations, and was the principle PT boat rendezvous point for the planned invasion of Japan. Mr. Cone received numerous awards including the American Area Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the Philippines Liberation Medal with 2 stars, and the Victory Medal. He was employed at the Charleston Naval Shipyard prior to the war as an apprentice joiner in the woodworking shop, and returned to the shipyard in 1960, where he remained employed until his retirement in 1980 as a wood crafting foreman in Shop 64. Mr. Cone was the “Tiger Team Leader” of the nuclear submarine refit/repair response team. He was a Christian, and served as Deacon at Abundant Life Church on Bees Ferry Road in Charleston.
Surviving, besides his wife of 58 years, are one son, David Charles Lindsie Cone, and wife Sharon, of Columbia, and one daughter, Lessie Cone Bryce, and husband Thomas, of Savannah. There are two grandchildren, Jordan Lindsie Cone, and Lauren Lessie Anne Cone. A sister, Martha Maude Cone Davis of Cottageville also survives Mr. Cone.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 in the chapel of Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, with burial following in the Ackerman Cemetery at Red Oak. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
