Florence Johnson
COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Florence Burn Johnson, 74, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Welsh Neck Baptist Church Cemetery, Society Hill. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to The Caroliniana Society at U.S.C.
Mrs. Johnson, wife of the late Jack Louis Johnson, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005. Born in Society Hill, she was a daughter of the late Frank H. Burn, Sr. and Sarah Treacy Burn. A graduate of Columbia Hospital School of Nursing, she had a 51 year nursing career having practiced at St. Rose Hospital in Hayward, Calif., Highland Hospital in Oakland, Calif., and, most recently, the Bryan Center following her retirement from the Dorn V.A. Hospital. She was a lifetime member of The Caroliniana Society at U.S.C.
Surviving are her children, Michael E. Johnson and his wife, Valarie, Michelle J. Bridge and her husband, Gene, John D. Johnson, and Patricia J. Zander and her husband, David, all of Columbia; brother, Frank H. Burn, Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters, Sarah Martha B. Moore of Columbia and Julia Alice “Vicki” Ham of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Kristian E. Johnson, Brian W. Bridge and his wife, Danielle, Matthew S. Bridge, Kelly A. Zander, and Erin M. Zander. She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Treacy Burn, and stepmother, Miriam H. Burn.
Walter Mae Keller
ELLOREE — Walter Mae Keller, 69, of 144 Salvador Circle, Elloree, S.C., died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at her residence after a brief illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 4, at Fogle-Hungerpiller Funeral Home with burial in Santee Baptist Cemetery. Fogle-Hungerpiller Funeral Home is in charge.
Miss Keller was born in Orangeburg County. She was the daughter of the late Walter L. and Hilda Mae Crim Keller. She was a retired seamstress. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elloree, S.C.
Survivors: 3 sons, George Allen Keller, Elloree, S.C., James David Keller, Elloree, S.C., Eddie Dean Keller, Summerton, S.C.; 1 brother, George Adam Keller, Manning, S.C.; 3 sisters, Mary Ann Herndon, Walterboro, S.C., Josephine Shirley Myers, Atlanta, Georgia, Bonnie Mae Utsey, St. George, S.C.; 5 grandchildren.

Ruth Kelly
BLYTHEWOOD — Services for Ruth Ellen Kelly, 65, 2:30 p.m. today at Round Top Baptist Church. Brown’s Funeral Home, Camden, is in charge. Born in Blythewood to Riley and Ruth L. Brown, she died March 1, 2005. Surviving: spouse, Nathaniel Kelly; children, Valerie Turner, Cynthia Mathis, Vernon, Relginald, Wade Kelly; siblings, Gladys Pretlow, Willie Mae McDaniel, Susie Bently, Alexander Weeks; others.
Eleanor Berryhill
MARION — Eleanor Powers Berryhill died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at the Presbyterian Home in Florence.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at Ebenezer Southern Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Spring Branch Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Smith-Collins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Berryhill was born in Marion, December 21, 1936, a daughter of the late Thomas Cecil and Eunice Lane Powers. She was a 1954 graduate of Marion High School and a 1958 graduate of Coker College. She was a retired educator, having taught in the schools of Ohio and South Carolina. She also served as music director of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Florence.
Eleanor was a faithful member of Ebenezer Southern Methodist Church, where she served in many positions of responsibility, including Sunday School teacher, VBS director, WMS officer and choir member. She also served tirelessly in her community and state, holding numerous offices in organizations including, Friends of Ebenezer Historic Society, Marion Music Club, Parents Without Partners, Temperance Hill Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Florence Little Theater, S.C. Democratic Party, SCEA, NEA and American Heart and Cancer Associations.
Eleanor was an avid bridge player, enjoyed traveling and helping others. At a recent college reunion when asked what was important in her life now, Eleanor wrote, “to enjoy my retirement to the fullest doing all I can for family and friends.”
Eleanor was an inspiration to all as she valiantly fought the ravages of Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Surviving Mrs. Berryhill are a son, Robert William Berryhill, Jr. of California; and 2 sisters, Mrs. Opal Ward and her husband Cecil of Florence and Mrs. Miriam Jordan and her husband Wilburn of Columbia.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 til 8 p.m. at Smith-Collins Funeral Home.
Lucille Smith
MARTIN — Services with burial for Lucille Anderson Smith, 89, widow of Ernest Smith, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, Millette. Cave Funeral Service is in charge. Born to Nick and Lelia Moton Anderson, she died March 2, 2005. Surviving are children, Willie Ruth Drayton, Marie, Francena Brodus, Alice Williams, Frances Allen, Gertrude Holly, Frank and Donald Smith.
Mary Savage
CARLISLE — Services with burial for Mary Elizabeth Savage, 73, are 2 p.m. Saturday at Jeter Chapel AME Church, where she was a member. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home, Union, is in charge. Born in Union Co. to Willie and Alberta Smith, she died Feb. 28, 2005. Surviving are husband, James Savage; children, Floyd, Gary, Dwight, Ricky, Coryie, Temika, Ora Savage, Ernestine Sims, Jackie Hardy, Mary Fogle.
Aurelia Kelly
COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Aurelia Starks Kelly, of 121 Solomon St., will be held at noon Saturday at Roundtop Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 6 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel.
Mrs. Kelly died Wednesday, March 2, 2005. Born in Ridgeway, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Mary Squirewell Starks. She was a member of Roundtop Baptist Church, Deaconess Board and Easter Star (Cleopatra) #240.
Surviving are her daughters, Juanita K. (Sam) Henry and Jacqueline D. Kelly; son, Nathan D. Kelly; sisters, Mamie Belton, Josie Trapp and Gussie Harris; brother, David Starks; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Ernest Allen
FLORENCE — Ernest Sterling Allen, 93, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2005, after a brief illness. He was a son of W. Melvin Allen and Belle Turner Allen. Mr. Allen was an engineer with Seaboard Coastline Railroad for 40 years. He also had farming, cattle-breeding and real estate interests.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, the Golden Age Club, and the Senior Citizen Club. He was a Mason (life member of Amity Lodge) and a member of B.O.L.E.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Edith Wilson Allen; two sons, Ernest Ray (Anita) Allen of Aiken, SC, Dr. Sterling (Jane) Allen of Anderson, SC; and daughter, Debra (Mike) Shelton of Hickory, NC; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Clarence, Ocie and W. Melvin Allen, Jr.; and three sisters, Ora Gause, Evelyn Turner, and Adamae Hill.
A memorial service will be 3:30 p.m., Friday, March 4, 2005, at Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel with visitation immediately following services.

Rebekah Banks
KERSHAW — Mrs. Rebekah Winson Catoe Banks, 89, joined her loving departed husband, Robert Floyd Banks, on March 2, 2005. Mrs. Banks was born April 14, 1915, in Kershaw, a daughter of the late Willie Riley Catoe and Josie Blackmon Catoe. Mrs. Banks devotedly taught her community’s friends and families in Lancaster County Schools for 47 years. She also cherished her many years of service to leading and teaching the Midway Baptist Church Adult Ladies Sunday School Class. Her church family remained especially close to her heart. Mrs. Banks completed her undergraduate work at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC. She furthered her education at the University of South Carolina in Columbia and received a MS in Education. Her lifelong achievements included being a member of the Eastern Star Chapter #93. Mrs. Banks is also remembered for recognition at the South Carolina State Fair on behalf of her flowers and baking legacy.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 5, 2005, at 3 p.m. from the Midway Baptist Church by the Rev. Randall Runion and the Rev. Donald McManus. Burial will be in the Midway Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Banks is survived by a son, William Robert “Bob” Banks, Ph.D. and his wife Krispin of Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. Thelma Hilton and her husband Laban of Bamberg and Mrs. Dorcas C. McLean of Fayetteville; two grandchildren, William Robert Banks, Jr. and his wife Michele of Cary, NC and Juliet Banks Larson and her husband Scott of Lantana, TX; and a great-grandchild, Victoria Michele Banks.
