Martha McInnis
LAURINBURG, N.C. — Mrs. Martha Claiborne McInnis, 90, of Scotia Village and formerly of Clio died Wednesday, February 16, at Scotia Village.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Carolina Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Clio by the Rev. Thomas Groome.
She is survived by her son, John McInnis, III and his wife, Gail of Clio and her daughter, Claiborne McInnis of Bennettsville; two grandchildren, Beth McInnis of Spartanburg and Haden Milligan of Laurinburg.
She was born February 15, 1915, in Kingstree, S.C., a daughter of the late William C. and Bessie Boyd Claiborne. A graduate of Coker College, “Miss Martha” taught history and Latin in Summerton, Bennettsville, Clio, and Gibson. She was also a former adult Sunday school teacher at Clio Presbyterian Church. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a beloved grandmother.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice of Scotland County, P.O. Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence of John McInnis, 1622 Tatum Hwy., Clio.

Shirley Brooks
COLUMBIA — Services with burial for Shirley Jeffers Brooks, 55, will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Old McGraw Baptist Church, Eastover. Visitation is 1-8 p.m. today at Jones Metropolitan Funeral Home, West Columbia. Born in Lexington County to Andrew Archie and Frenny Brooks, she died February 11, 2005. Surviving are daughters, Alicia Harmon, Lawanda Brooks, Beverly Artiss, Dawn Johnson; 8 grandchildren.
Thomas Turner
MORGANTON, N.C. — Thomas Henry Turner, 48, died Monday, February 14, 2005, in Morganton.
Mr. Turner was born in Kingstree on April 26, 1956, a son of the late William H. Turner, Sr. and Bernice Hardee Turner. He was an accomplished musician. Mr. Turner was a Dallas 481 ironworker and certified nuclear submarine pipe fitter. He was known for his sparkle of life and free spirit. His smile could light up the darkest room. Mr. Turner was a member of Andrews First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include: a son, Waylon Turner, a sister, Sandra Turner; a brother, William Turner; three nieces, Karen Pope, Daniella Howard, and LeeAnn Turner; and a nephew, Will Turner.
Memorial services will be one o’clock Saturday afternoon, February 19, 2005. at the graveside in Andrews Memorial Cemetery in Andrews.

Charles Vieth
NORTH CHARLESTON — The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vieth are invited to attend the Funeral Service of the former, 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. He was born February 10, 1923, in Aiken, SC to the late Charles Vieth and Bertha R. Vieth. Mr. Vieth was a retired sheet metal Mechanic with the Charleston Naval Shipyard, he is a member of the sheet metal workers international association local #549 at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, he is also a former member of the Yeamans Hall, Stone River and the Berkeley Country Club’s and is a member of Cooper River Baptist Church. He served in the United States Navy and the reserves. He is survived by his wife Nan Kathryn Vieth, a daughter Dean Bonneville (Jim) of Columbia, two sons Eddie Vieth (Sherry) of Navarre Fla, Tommy Vieth of Myrtle Beach, four Grandchildren, Michelle Watkins (Chris) of Lugoff, Richard Bonneville (Leah) of Camden, Suzie Lewis (Jonathan) Chesapeake VA, Chuck Vieth (Tonya) of Ft. Ruby Tolbert
COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Mrs. Ruby Barber Tolbert, 78, of Columbia, will be held 12:30 o’clock Friday afternoon, February 18, 2005, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, conducted by The Rev. Owen Tucker. The family will receive friends from 11:30 until 12:30 o’clock prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Mrs. Tolbert, widow of Albert H. Tolbert, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005. Born in Columbia, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Sam W. and Cora Rabon Barber. She was retired from the Department of Army, Fort Jackson. Mrs. Tolbert served as a volunteer with Providence Hospital and was a member of Peterson Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter and son, Diane Gossett Clark and William Russell Gossett; five grandchildren, Dawn Clark, Tara Clark, Jackie Rivers, Barbara Arehart and Bill Gossett all of Columbia. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren and a sister, Edna B. Snipes of Columbia. Mrs. Tolbert was preceded in death by five sisters and her first husband, James R. Gossett.
Geneva Taylor
GREAT FALLS — Mrs. Geneva Mangum Taylor, 79, of 116 Hollybrook Drive, Great Falls, SC, wife of Mr. James F. Taylor, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005, in Springs Memorial Hospital, Lancaster, SC. Service will be 2:00 Friday, February 18, 2005, at Trinity Baptist Church, Great Falls, SC, with interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Great Falls, SC. Officiating ministers will be Rev. Brian Hovis and Rev. Marion Dry. Mrs. Taylor was born in Kershaw County, SC, August 22, 1925, to Bundy E. Mangum (deceased) and Annie (Munn) Mangrum (deceased). She was formerly employed with J.P. Stevens Company and later worked and retired from Belk Department Stores in Winnsboro, SC. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and a graduate of Kershaw County Schools. Jean Tidwell
LEXINGTON — Services for Jean P. Tidwell, 66, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 18, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel with interment to follow in Tidwell Family Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
Mrs. Tidwell died Tuesday, February 15, 2005. Born in Lapeer, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Carl H. and Helen Reincke Parker. Mrs. Tidwell was a former Minister of Hosana Missionary Gospel Church.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene Tidwell, Sr.; son Eugene Tidwell, Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Peggy T. and Sammy Williams; grandchildren, Samantha, Sabrina and Victoria Williams, all of Lexington; and sister, Jane Christopher of Little York, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her son, Mark A. Tidwell and sister, Helen June Ardis.
Annie Glymph
COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Annie Ruth Savage Glymph, of 516 W. Campanella Drive, will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Northminster Presbyterian Church, with burial in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 7 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel.
Mrs. Glymph died Monday, February 14, 2005. Born in Union County, she was the daughter of the late Jessie Jeter and Betsy Savage Thompson. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her children, Patricia G. Williams, Dr. Thavolia Glymph, John L., James, Roslyn Bland, Vivian R. Glymph and Cheryl G. Boyd; 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Violet Ponds
BAMBERG — Violet Margaret Ponds, 83, of 198 Lacey St., Bamberg, SC, died Feb. 16, 2005, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Villa Breeland Ponds. She was born Jan. 18, 1922, in Ashton, SC. She was the Pianist for her Sunday School Class and was a member of the Bertha Herndon Circle. She volunteered as a Bamberg Hospice worker and with Meals on Wheels.
Miss Ponds graduated from Winthrop College with a B.S. degree in Biology and from the University of North Carolina with a Master’s degree in Health Education. Formerly, she was a Science School Teacher and Principal for several years. Later she became Associate Director of the Mental Health program in Guilford County in High Point, North Carolina for 16 years. After an early retirement she returned to South Carolina.
Survivors include three sisters: Miriam Kinard of Bamberg, SC, Evelyn Fowler of Lodge, SC, and “Ginger” Anne Mackenzie of Goose Creek, and one Brother Joe J. Ponds of Ashton, SC, and several Nieces and Nephews.
The Funeral will be Friday 02-18-05 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Bamberg, SC, with Dr. Webb Belangia officiating. Burial will be in the Ashton Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday 02-17-05 from 6-8 p.m. at Cooner Funeral Home, Bamberg, SC. Family will receive friends and family at the home of Miriam Kinard 11195 Heritage Highway, Bamberg, SC.

Edward Cushman
AIKEN — Mr. Edward Charles Cushman, Jr., 86, of Aiken, died Tuesday, February 16, 2005, in the Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 4 P.M. Friday, at First Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. Fred Andrea, III will officiate. Interment will follow in Bethany Cemetery.
Mr. Cushman was born Sept. 21, 1918 at Aiken, son of Edward C. Sr. and Mary Nagel Swearingen Cushman.
He married Ruth Lecil Drummond of Jenkinsville on Sept. 15, 1943. They had two children, Ruth Lecil (Tinks) Roberts and Mary Nagel Cushman, both of Columbia, and a grandson, Richard Edward Harden.
Mr. Cushman graduated from Aiken High School in 1935 as class valedictorian, senior class president and president of the student body. In 1939 he graduated from Furman University. At Furman he was listed as Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and was president of the student legislature and business manager of the student newspaper, The Hornet.
He graduated from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1942, and was awarded his diploma in absentia (he was serving in the military in the Southwest Pacific Theater). At USC he had served as editor of the yearbook of the Selden Society. He did postgraduate studies in public finance and taxation at USC in 1947-48.
On July 7, 1942, he transferred from the US Marine Corps Reserve and was awarded a commission as a regular officer in the United States Marine Corps. He was a veteran of the invasion and subjugation of Guadalcanal, 11th Regiment, First Marine Division; and a veteran of the invasion and subjugation of Iwo Jima, 13th Regiment, Fifth Marine Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star, with Combat V, for service in action in Iwo Lima.
