LORIS — Services for Alice Hardee Carter, 83, widow of William Carter, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Macedonia Baptist Church with committal services in Carter Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Hardwick Funeral Home. Born in Loris to Willie and Margaret Hardee, she died Jan. 15, 2005. Surviving are daughters, Wilma Bullard, Jewell Godfrey; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Margaret Culpepper
COLUMBIA — Service for Margaret White Culpepper, 77, will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Brad Lewis, Brian Lewis and Brandy Lewis; great-grandson, Adam Lewis; nephew, William M. Bennett; and friend, Howard Moody.
Mrs. Culpepper, wife of the late H. W. “Dub” Culpepper, died Friday, January 14, 2005. Born in Nashville, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late William White and Lela Escue White. She fulfilled her childhood dream to be a loving mother. Blessed with five children, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, life was complete. Trusting God to see her through everything in this life to eternity with Him, she bravely and gracefully faced cancer without fear.
A loving and tender soul, she in thanksgiving gave generously to others. Please join us in celebrating life by following her example, giving back to God in thanksgiving for His many blessings, by giving generously to one of her favorite charities: Feed the children or Special Olympics. You are sure to be blessed.
Surviving are sons, Michael W. Culpepper of San Francisco, Calif. and Kenneth H. Culpepper and his wife, Mary, of Charlotte, N.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Don Rothwell of Columbia. Susan and Charles Tyler of Manning and Kathy and Eddie Wingard of Blythewood; brother, William B. white of Columbia; sister, Terri Bennett of Columbia; grandchildren, Brad Lewis and his wife, Amanda, Brian Lewis and his wife, Marcia, Brandy Lewis, Kristine Lopez, Tracy Cardoza, Houston Culpepper, Betsy Tyler, Katie Tyler and Laura Wingard; and great-grandchildren, Adam Lewis, Nocholas Lewis, Kiana Lopez and Danica Lopez.

Surviving are sisters, Pauline Burris, Gloria Self; 11 nieces; one nephew.

LANES — Services for Sam Giles Jr., 84, will be held at 11 a.m. today at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Lanes, with burial in Gordon Cemetery. Henryhand Funeral Home, Kingstree, is in charge. He died Jan. 12, 2005. Born in New Zion to Letha Mae Floyd, he died Jan. 15, 2005. Surviving are wife, Irene Floyd; children, Donald, Jimmy, Roy Floyd, Karen Parker, Janet Gainey; two siblings; 12 grandchildren.
Douglas Grow
COLUMBIA — Service for Douglas Melvin Grow, 46, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Carolina Children’s Home, 3201 Trenholm Rd., Columbia, S.C. 29204. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
Mr. Grow died Friday, January 14, 2005. Born in Dayton, Ohio, he was the son of Robert L. Grow and the late Nancy L. Grow. A 1976 graduate of Belfontaine High School, Belfontaine, Ohio, he served in the U.S. Air Force in telecommunications. He was an avid fisherman and golfer and enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles. He was a member of Columbia Northeast Christian Church.
Surviving are his daughter, Chelsea Renee Grow of Columbia; his wife, Pandora Y. Graham-Grow and step-daughter, Mryriha Ashley Graham of Columbia: his father and step-mother, Robert L. Grow and Dorothy Southern Grow of Chapin; and sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Bob Rawers of Sullivan’s Island. He was formerly married to Geraldine D. Grow. He was predeceased by his sister, Diane C. Grow.

Rev. James Johnston
MYRTLE BEACH — Rev. James W. Johnston 86, died Sunday, January 16, 2005, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
Rev. Johnston was born Jan 10, 1919, in Decatur, GA, a son of the late Will and Oma Williams Johnston.
Rev. Johnston was a retired Methodist Minister serving the S.C. United Methodist Church Conference. Rev. Johnston was called by the Pelion Charge for his first church, he also served as Senior Pastor with Epworth Children’s Home Church, Main Street United Methodist, Mount Pleasant-Pisgah Charge, Saluda Charge, North-Limestone Charge, Ware Shoals-Hodges Charge, Suber Marshall United Methodist Church. He served two terms at Shiloh Methodist and retired from the Ministry at Pond Branch United Methodist Church in 1986. He was a Army Veteran of World War II.
Surviving is his wife of sixty-three years, Florence N. Johnston, a son, Rev. James W. Johnston Jr. and wife Kathy Ann of Greenwood, SC; Three daughters, Rendy Howle and husband Bill of Orlando, FL, Shirley J. Livingston and her husband Don of Webster, NC and Sara J. Melton of Myrtle Beach, SC; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday January 18, 2005 at Pond Branch United Methodist Church in Gilbert, SC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church following the services.
