COLUMBIA: Dorothy Bynum Shuman, 91, of Columbia, died Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at National Health Care-Parklane. Born July 21, 1916, near Eastover, SC, she was the youngest child of the late Drury M. and Mary Sires Bynum. She was a member of St. Martin's in the Fields Episcopal Church. She was a very caring person during her illness.

Bryan officiating. Interment will follow in Killian Baptist Church Cemetery, Killian, SC. Serving as pallbearers will be Fred Kaigler, Charlie Butler, Wayne Rogers, Danny Gaffney, Paul Hook, and John "Runt" Hook. Joseph Nathaniel Rogers
Funeral services for Joseph Nathaniel Rogers, 78, of 1105 Bargain Drive, Cross, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at Zion United Methodist Church in Cross, with the Rev. Wendell W. Sumter officiating. Burial will be in the Jehovah Eadytown Cemetery in Cross.
Mr. Rogers died Sunday, Jan. 18.
He was born in Cross, the son of the late Rev. Joseph Rogers and Mrs. Emma Richburg Rogers. He attended the public schools of Cross and was a member of Bethel Methodist Church. He moved away, first to Florida, then to New York City before finally settling in Orange, N.J. before his retirement and return to Cross. He was employed at the Greater New York Meat Packing Company and later founded his construction company, "Poor Nate."
For 30 years, Nathan was an active member of St. Luke AME Church in Newark, N.J., and was a faithful, dedicated member. Upon his return to Cross, he joined Zion and was an active member of the Male Chorus and United Methodist Men. He was a life member of the NAACP and was a founding member of the Rogers-Eadie Family Reunion.
Nathan was preceded in death by a son, Alfreddie Scott Rogers; two sisters, Mrs. Annabelle Howell and Mrs. Emmaline Simmons and one brother, Francis Rogers.
His survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Agnes Mae Brown Rogers of the home; three daughters, Rose Marie (Bernard) Jefferson of Orange, N.J., Barbara Crawford of Columbia and Veronica (Marty) Mayes of Hillsborough, N.J.; four sons, Joseph (Belinda) of Shelton, Conn., John Leonard of Irvington, N.J., Kevin of New Brunswick, N.J. and Nathaniel (Tammy) of Springfield, N.J.; one sister, Mrs. Henrietta Nesbitt of Tuscon, Ariz.; one brother, the Rev. Garfield (Margie) Rogers of Cross; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family members, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Viewing will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. at Shuler-Marshall Funeral Home of Holly Hill and from 12 to 1 p.m. Saturday, at Zion United Methodist Church. There will be no viewing at the end of the service.

Deloris Whetstone Gleaton
Deloris Whetstone Gleaton, 79, of 4398 St. Matthews Road, Orangeburg, died Sunday morning, March 16, 2008, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, in the New Hope Baptist Church in Orangeburg, with the Rev. Anthony Hughes, the Rev. Dallas Redding, the Rev. Mike Watson and the Rev. Justin Eshleman officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg, directed by Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. of Orangeburg.
The casket will be placed in the church one hour before the service.
Active pallbearers will be Jason Dudarrenke, Phillip Cave, David Dickerson, Johnny Bell, Bobby Bell, Bernie Medley, Mike Williams, J.W. Young and Jodi Atkins.
Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of Mount Carmel Baptist Church and Deacons of New Hope Baptist Church.
Mrs. Gleaton was born June 25, 1928, in Orangeburg, a daughter of the late James W. Whetstone and the late Edna Blackmon Whetstone. She was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Oates and by two brothers, Vance Whetstone and James Whetstone.
Survivors include her husband, H. B. Gleaton of the home in Jamison; two daughters, Bonnie Rogers and her husband, Danny of Florence, and Lind Taylor of Florence; one son, Jerry Oates and his wife, Misty of Orangeburg; stepdaughter, Ann Black of Lexington; sons, Donald Gleaton of Lexington and Larry Gleaton and his wife, Karma of Blythewood; four sisters, Beatrice Brooks and Hattie Brown, all of Cayce, Billie Carter and her husband, Thomas of Orangeburg, Gwen Calcutt of Orangeburg; sister-in-law, Mary Whetstone of Orangeburg; brother, Morrison Whetstone and his wife, Lurene of Orangeburg; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Adell W. Collins
Mrs. Adell W. Collins, 76, of 6850 Johnston Ave., Reevesville, died Friday, March 14, 2008, at the Trident Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was a lady of faith.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 17, in the Reevesville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joey Branch and the Rev. Bobby Etheridge officiating, with Eastern Star Rites. Burial will follow in the Old St. George Church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bert Ethridge, D.J. Broderick, Robby Sanders, Donny Sanders, Chad Collins and Charles Baker.
Mrs. Collins was born October 27, 1931, in Reevesville, a daughter of the late William Addison Walters and Viola Lee Hartzog Walters. She was a graduate of St. George High School and Colleton Hospital Nursing Program. She was a retired LPN with the Home Health Services at Dorchester County Health Department. She was a member of the Reevesville Baptist Church; she held a dual membership with the St. George Eastern Star Chapter #166 and the Harmony Hope #229 in Barnwell and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary EL BAB Shrine Club. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Earle K. Williams.
Survivors include her husband, L.C. Collins of Reevesville; three daughters, Kathy (Ricky) Gleaton of Reevesville, Nancy Williams of Cordova and Polly Sanders of Barnwell; three sons, W.C. (Emily) Collins, Danny (Bonnie) Collins, both of Barnwell and Benny (Melanie) Collins of Williston; two brothers, David L. "Bub" (Georgia) Walters and Ernest (Ann) Walters, both of Reevesville; her aunt, Fannie Hartzog of St. George; grandchildren, Chris Williams of the home, Renee (Bert) Ethridge, Cissy Gleaton, Angela (D.J.) Funeral services for Lamar Edwin Chase, 17, of 127 Winter Creek Road, Bowman, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Arthur Goforth, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.
Lamar Edwin Chase entered into eternal rest on Jan. 20, in Bowman.
He was born Feb. 19, 1991, a son of Mark Edwin Chase and Jessica E. Williams. He attended the public schools of Orangeburg County and was a current senior at Bowman-Bethune High. He was employed at McDonald's in Bowman. He was a faithful attendee of Mount Zion Church in Bowman.
Survivors include his parents, Mark Edwin Chase and Jessica E. Williams; grandfather, Thomas Williams of Queens, N.Y.; grandmother, Elizabeth Chase of Newburgh, N.Y.; aunts, Alvita Williams of Queens, N.Y., Cheryl Ann Williams of Bowman, Sylvia Williams of St. George, Barbara Hutchinson of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Paula Chase of Newburgh, N.Y.; uncles, Anthony Williams, Erroll Williams of Queens, N.Y., and Kevin Chase of Newburgh, N.Y.
