Mrs. Mitchell died Thursday, April 17.
Mrs. Mitchell was born December 11, 1913, in Calhoun County to Daisy and Jacob Mitchell. She was educated in the public school systems of Calhoun County, where she excelled in mathematics and spelling. In 1947, Helen joined the Calvary Baptist Church, where she served as Mother of the church. She was a former Sunday School teacher and also a member of the Mount Carmel Baptist Association/Upper Division Women's Auxiliary and the UPS Calvary No. 1933 Lodge.
Mrs. Mitchell loved the land. She farmed her own leased land growing cotton, corn, peanuts, sweet potatoes and peas. She would always rather be outside; she would often say that she felt better outside and that she was getting her exercise by raking her yard and tending to her "kitchen garden." Helen often exchanged her farming expertise with others and conducted a lye soap workshop with the Clemson Extension. During the winter, she enjoyed quilting and sharing time with friends and family around the fireplace in her home.
Miss Helen was a phenomenal, independent woman with a profound sense of right and wrong. She feared no one and nothing. She believed in fair play; she was willing to fight for right and instilled that into her children.
Miss Helen gave birth to nine children, and they adopted another "brother" Marion Walker. Two children, Angeline Thomas and Alfonza (Junior) Mitchell, preceded her in death.
Miss Helen leaves to cherish her fondly: seven children, Lillian (the late Albert) Cain, Orangeburg; Annie L. (Henry) Lavan, Laurelton, N.Y.; Leon (Barbara) Mitchell, Cambria Heights, N.Y.; Vera Mitchell, Bronx, N.Y./St Matthews; Carolyn Mitchell, Morristown, N.J.; Virgina A. Mitchell, New York, N.Y.; and Altheron (Patricia) Mitchell, St Matthews; four siblings: Viola (the late Willie) Lucas, Columbia; Julius (Mattie) Larrymore. South Ozone Park, N.Y.; Zenia (the late Roosevelt) Sasportas, Bronx, N.Y.; and Daniel (Mattie) Larrymore, St Matthews; 14 grandchildren: Belinda Thomas, Kim Roper, Deborah (Russell) Kenton, Terrance (Valarie) Lavan, Sharon Littles, Clifton Orlando (Gina) Thomas, Adrienne (Henry) Jackson, Wayne Roper, Kenneth Thomas, Stacey Thomas, Leta Mitchell, Keith Mitchell, Kevin Mitchell, and Shani Petel Jimeta; two step grandchildren, Melvin and Alvin Mitchell, 32 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors and many other persons whose lives she touched and influences. A very special niece, Mrs. Vivian Hart of St. Matthews.
