Funeral services for Harry A Yoder, 88, of Blackville, SC will be held two p.m., Sunday, March 15 at Calvary Fellowship Mennonite Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, March 14 from six to eight p.m. at Calvary Fellowship Mennonite Church. Mr. Yoder entered into rest, Friday March 13, 2009.
Born in Holmes County, OH he was a son of the late Albert Yoder and Mattie Weaver Yoder. Mr. Yoder moved to Blackville, SC in 1967 where he farmed and worked as a carpenter. He was a member of Calvary Fellowship Mennonite Church.
Survivors include his sons, Robert (Elsie) Yoder, Harry Edward Yoder; daughters, Anna (Mose) Kaufman, Ruth (Godofredo) Cruz, Miriam (Kore) Yoder; brother, Wayne Yoder; sister, Susie Miller; 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Weaver Yoder, a daughter, Mattie Yoder and an infant son.

Funeral services for Corrie Rosier Ross Primrose, 88, of Blackville, SC will be held three p.m., Monday, March 16 at Blackville First Baptist Church with Dr. Thomas Terry and Rev. Russ Reed officiating. The family will receive friends from two p.m. until the time of the service Monday in the fellowship hall at the church. The family greatly appreciates the exceptional care provided by the staff at Laurel Baye Health Care of Williston. Mrs. Primrose died on Saturday, March 14, 2009.
Born in Barnwell County, she was a daughter of the late Joe Rosier and Dony Gilliam Rosier. She was first married to the late J.B. Ross and was the widow of William Primrose. She was a member of Blackville First Baptist Church and the Naomi Sunday School class. She was a seamstress for the Palm Beach Company, co-owned and operated Ross Restaurant in Blackville for a number of years and was a sales clerk at Stafford’s Department Store.
Survivors include sons, Stanley (Linda) Ross of Blackville, Bill (Jenny) Ross of Lexington, son-in-law, Burl Fauchier of Barnwell, sister-in-law, Minnie Rosier Hallman, nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara R. Fauchier, sister, Mamie Rosier Dyches; brothers, Leo, Blease, Leon, and Joe Rosier.

Graveside funeral services for Roland Wakefield, 73, of Williston, SC will be held eleven a.m., Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at The Williston Cemetery with Dr. David Richardson and Rev. Chip Reeves officiating. The family has requested that memorial contributions may be sent to Williston Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 151, Williston, SC 29853. Mr. Wakefield died Saturday, March 7, 2009.
Born in Cullman County, AL, he was a son of Blanche Wolfe Wakefield and the late William Belton Wakefield. He was a deacon and member of Williston First Baptist Church having served in various capacities within the church until his health declined. Mr. Wakefield attended USC-A and Aiken Technical College. He was a safety engineer at SRP and retired from Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF). He was a member of The Williston Lions Club where he held various offices over the years, was Lion of the Year in 1973 and was a member of the US Army Reserve, Williston Unit. Mr. Wakefield was a big fan and supporter of the Williston-Elko Blue Devils and was an avid fisherman on the Edisto River.
Survivors include his mother of Jasper, AL; his wife, Janice Martin Wakefield of the home; brother, Lavon (Montez) Wakefield of Jasper, AL; sisters-in-law, Fran Copeland Wakefield, of Jasper, AL; Donna (Bill) Martin Farr of North Augusta, Miriam Martin Mills of West Columbia, nephews, Ladon, Brian, Stanley Wakefield of Birmingham, AL; Christopher Wakefield of Jasper, AL, James Daniel (Holly) Holloway of Evans, GA and nieces, Amanda Wakefield Faught of Jasper, AL, Ashley Farr (Adam) Harris of Martinez, GA. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Wakefield and a brother, Don Wakefield.

Funeral services for Dorothy Keel Owens, 89, of Williston, will be held three p.m., Friday, March 6 at Elko Baptist Church with burial in the Blackville Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from two p.m. until the time of service in the Elko Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Mrs. Owens entered her eternal home in heaven on Wednesday, March 4, 2009.
Born in Barnwell County, she was a daughter of the late Solomon John Keel and Belle Hair Keel. Family, friends and loved ones affectionately knew her as “Mimi”. She was a homemaker and a talented seamstress. She formerly employed with Singer Sewing Machine store in Barnwell for many years and the US Post Office in Elko, SC. She also served as the pianist for Elko Baptist Church and several area community churches. She was a member of Elko Baptist Church and the Clara Hitt Sunday School. She always held a deep concern for those serving in our mission fields here and abroad.
Survivors include her daughter, Faye (Skeet) Birt of Barnwell; son, Pat (Melvena) Owens of James Island, SC; grandchildren, Terri (John) Reeley of Lexington, Angela (Andy) Williams of Barnwell, Jeff (Jan) Birt of Williston, Dawn (Tim) Ochal, Las Vegas, NV, Curtis Owens of James Island, Sheila Renee Owens of James Island, Crystal (Scott) Dunaway of Fort Mill, SC; 13 great grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Norman Owens and grandsons, Patrick LaDon Owens and Tony Lanier Birt.

The family will receive friends from six to eight p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Wood died on Wednesday, March 4, 2009.
Born in Barnwell County, he was a son of the late Norman Preston Wood Sr. and Lillie Mae Padgett Wood and was married to the late Bronell Driggers Wood. He was a machinist having retired from Square D Company in Columbia and E C & M in St. Matthews.
Survivors include a son, Gene A. Wood, Jr., of Blythewood; daughters and son-in-law, Natalie W. and David Sasser of Sneads Ferry, NC and Wanda W. and Joseph Carney of Sumter; sister Nell Wood Carrigg of Darlington; brother Norman “Buddy” Wood Jr., of Texas; grandchildren, Joseph Hunter Wood and Savana Grace Harvey. He was preceded in death by sisters Ruby Maude Axson and Oleta Garrick.

Born in Elko, SC, she was a daughter of the late John Pleasant Jones and Addie Mae Britt Jones. She was a homemaker and was married to the late Weston G. Carroll. She was a member of Williston First Baptist Church where she was a member of WMU.
Survivors include a daughter Barbara Faye Carroll Shaffer and her husband Steve of Columbia; a son, George Aubrey Carroll of Williston; grandchildren, Brandt (Jeannie) Shaffer, Scott (Misty) Shaffer, Wayne Carroll, Randy Carroll, Mark (Eloise) Carroll; great grandchildren, Kevin, Kimberly (Randy), Stewart (Kelly), Austin, Cameron, Parker, Sadie, Sydnie Alana and Cass Weston. Mary Alma Sons Bolin, 91, of Salley, a devout Christian and believer in God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 20, 2011. Funeral services will be held two p.m., Saturday, January 22, 2011 at the Salley Baptist Church with Rev. Phillip Proveau officiating. Burial will be in the Salley Oakview Cemetery. Born in Leesville, SC, she was a daughter of the late Henry Edwards Sons and Maybelle Allewine Sons and was married to the late Daniel Benjamin Bolin. She was a seamstress having retired from Salley Manufacturing Company, was a member of Salley Baptist Church for 65 years and was a member of the TEL Sunday School Class. A loving and caring mother, kind and gentle who tended the sick and needy and never met a stranger and she loved all the people in her hometown of Salley. She will be missed.

Born in Williston, SC, she was a daughter of the late Matthew Smith Lott and Olive Porter Lott and was married to the late James Brantley Kitchings, Jr. She attended Columbia Business School and retired from the Richland County Solicitor’s Office having worked for more than 20 years.

(Ron) Hackney of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; a son, James R. “Jim” (Julie) Kitchings of Tennille, GA; sisters, Patty (Ted) Craig, June (Don) Bolton, Jo (Larry) Fail; grandchildren, Tricia Campbell Ross, Brantley W. Richard Ashley McCreary, Jr.

Mr. Richard Ashley McCreary, Jr., 97, of Columbia, SC died Saturday evening Jan. 1, 2011. He was born in N. Augusta, SC 12/30/1913. He was the son of the late Richard Ashley McCreary, Sr. and Loulie Holley McCreary. He was the husband of the late Viola North McCreary.
Growing up in Columbia, his passion was baseball. He pitched for the first Columbia Post 6 Legion team under Coach Rhame. He along with Kirby Higby went to Houston Texas to play in the first night Legion baseball championship in 1931. He later became the baseball coach for Legion Post 55 for many years. He also was a proficient golfer and handball player. He played handball at the downtown YMCA for many years where he teamed with Dom Fusci and traveled the southeast. For 4 straight years they were the handball champions for North and South Carolina, a feat that has been unequaled in YMCA play to this day.
His early working career was at Hartley Grocery Company and from there he went to work with his mentor, the honorable late Lester L. Bates, Sr. with Capitol Life Insurance which was sold to United Insurance, from which he retired. During that time he was a manager for golf’s great trick shot artist, the late Joe Kirkwood. Above all he loved the Lord Jesus Christ and his family. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia since early childhood and had many close friends in the church.
He is survived by his three daughters Gloria McCreary Fiorini of Sumter, SC, Miriam McCreary Knight (Pete D’Amico) of Sacramento, Calif. and Shirley McCreary Johnson of Sumter, SC. His grandchildren are: Sam Fiorini, Jr. and Rick Fiorini of Columbia, SC, Ron Fiorini (Karen) and Ken Fiorini (Kendal) of Raleigh, NC., Vicki Knight Johnson (Jerry), Lynn Knight Amaro (Greg), Wendy Knight Hatt (Kevin) of Sacramento, Calif., Alan Knight, Jr. of Columbia, SC and Deborah Denise Knight (Sabour) Lowe of San Diego, Calif. Richard is survived by one sister Dorothy McCreary Clayton and her husband Tom Clayton of Snellville, Ga. He was predeceased by two sisters Juliet McCreary Refo and Virginia McCreary.
His great grandchildren are Heather Fiorini of Columbia, SC, Chantel Lopez (Brandon), John Gundersen, Jr. (Melissa), Christina Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, Dianna Johnson Weishar, Javier Rodriguez, Gabriel Rodgriguez and Brittanie Hatt of Sacramento, Calif., Nicholas Fiorini, Morgan Fiorini, Cameron Fiorini and Alexis Fiorini of Raleigh, NC., Ubaid Allah Zarie, Shayma Zarie, Sarah Zarie, Hedayah Zarie, Jumanah Zarie, Tasneem Zarie, Joshua Knight, Fallon Knight and Christie Brakefield.
His great, great grandchildren are: Kayia Lopez, Klohie Lopez, Jaden Rodriguez, Julian Rodriguez, Jana Zarie and Juwanah Zarie.
Funeral Services will be held at First Baptist Church – Boyce Chapel, 1306 Hampton St. in downtown Columbia at 11:30 AM on Saturday Jan. 8th, 2011. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 10:30 AM. The Rev. Dennis Banks will officiate.
The internment will be held in the Williston Cemetery, Williston, SC. Active pallbearers will be Ken Fiorini, Rick Fiorini, Ron Fiorini, Sam Forini, Jr., John Green and Alan Knight, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Jordan Men’s Sunday School Class.
Elsie Gyles Pettebone

Elsie Gyles Pettebone, a long time resident of Blackville, SC and formerly of Annapolis, MD passed away in the early morning of Monday, January 10, 2011 at the Tate Chesapeake Hospice House in Linthicum, MD, at the age of 86, due to bladder cancer and kidney failure.
Elsie was born on September 16, 1924 in Siler City, North Carolina and was the youngest daughter of the late Dr. Ronald Corbin Gyles and Valeria (Still) Gyles. Elsie was married to John Elliott Pettebone for 53 years, until his death in the late 1990’s. Both Mr. and Mrs. Pettebone spent their life in Annapolis, MD as active members of College Avenue Baptist Church where Mrs. Pettebone became the youngest President of the Women’s Missionary Union. After they moved to Blackville, SC in 1985 she became very active in the First Baptist Church of Blackville and in the Blackville Garden Club. Prior to her move to Blackville, Mrs. Pettebone spent 22 years in management at the Central Garage for the Anne Arundel County Government. She is survived by her son, John E. Pettebone and his wife, Bonnie of Odenton MD and her daughter, Kathye Pettebone Long and her, husband Gene of Severna Park MD.
Services will be held two p.m., Monday, January 17, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Blackville with burial in the Blackville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m.until time of the service at the church. The Rev. Ken Frederick and Dr.Thomas Terry officiating. Pallbearers will be Richard Creech, Jim Fickling, Monroe Lott, Jennings Martin, Herman Still and Mike Sullivan.

Born in Aiken County, he was a son of the late Alton Winston Williams, Sr. and Edna Louise Brabham Williams. He graduated from Newberry College with a Bachelor degree in Business Administration. He was a US Army Veteran having served during the Vietnam War. Winston was a charter member of New Testament Baptist Church and attended Fellowship of Truth Baptist Church. He formerly owned and operated Winco Hardware in Graniteville and retired from Maner Builders Supply in 2009 where he worked for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Connie Harbin Williams; a son, Daniel W. (Shanna) Williams, Wiley Hadden; a daughter, Andrea M. Williams; grandchildren, Ansley M. Williams, Mari Cavagna, Shelby Hadden, Joey Hadden; and a special pet companion, Juliette. He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy A. Williams, Sr.
