Mrs. Bertha Lee Fludd Gilyard
Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Lee Fludd Gilyard, 81, of 1780 Irvin Street, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 29, 2007, in the Felderville AME Church, Highway 176, Santee, with the Rev. Reginald C. Morton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Linsi Houser, Brandon Houser, Travis Fox, Jeremee Haynes, Gregory Outlaw and Jerry Haynes.
Mrs. Gilyard died Wednesday, October 24, at the Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born July 6, 1926, to the late William and Cecelia Ann William Fludd. Her seven siblings and two of her great-granddaughters preceded her in death.
She was educated at the Island School in the Providence community. She was a member of the school's basketball team. Later, she received her GED by attending an Orangeburg adult education program. She retired from Utica Tool Company. She spent many years volunteering at Orangeburg Calhoun Allendale and Bamberg Agency (OCAB). At an early age, she joined Felderville AME Church in Santee. During her membership, she received Christ and was affiliated with many organizations including president of the Senior Chior, president of the Women's Missionary Society, Usher Board, Class Leader, Steward, Pastor Aide Board, Junior Choir, Youth Choir, delegate to many AME Central Conferences and she received many church awards for her service.
She leaves to mourn a husband of 59 years, Samuel Gilyard of the home; four daughters, Evangelist Annie Ruth Gilyard Amaker, Barbara Jean Gilyard (Johnnie Lee) Houser, Geraldine Gilyard Outlaw, and Sandra Dee Gilyard (Bobby) Sumpter, all of Orangeburg; 10 grandchildren, Twaina Amaker (Randall) Harris, Vicki Amaker Haynes, Bertina Outlaw, Linsi Houser, Sharmain Outlaw, Brittany Sumpter, Brandon Houser, Erika Sumpter, Travis Fox, and Jasmine Fox; six great-grandchildren, Jeremee Haynes, Deon Haynes, Justin Haynes, Jaylan Riggins, Octavious Riggins, and Olivia Brown; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, at Bethea's Funeral Home. At other times, friends may call or visit the residence, 1780 Irvin Street, Orangeburg.
Virginia Simmons
Virginia Simmons, of 905 Dukes Street, St. George Nursing Home, St. George, died October 27, 2007, at Trident Hospital.
Funeral services will be announced by Ling Funeral Home of St. George.
Col. James C. Smith
Col. James C. Smith, USAF, (Retired), 91 of Wayne, W.Va., passed away at his residence on Saturday October 27, 2007.
Rev. Leo Gibson, Pastor Hamlet Don Smith, and Rev. Keith Allen Hall will conduct funeral services on Monday at 11:00 am at the Reger Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at the Smith Family Cemetery, Buffalo Creek Road. Grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Col. Smith was born on May 4, 1916, in Centerville, W.Va., the son of the late Hamlet and Caroline Virginia Hutchinson Smith.
In addition to his parents, two daughters preceded him in death: Peggy Elaine Moore and Marjorie Lynn Hall, one grandson: James Wallace Ferman, seven brothers: Clifford, Pascal, Sankie, Golden, Ernest, Walter Lee, and Merril Smith. One sister: Nellie Haynie.
Col. Smith entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in June 1942 as a private and graduated from the Air Force Cadet Program as a 2nd Lt. in March 1943.
Served in North African Theater of operations during WWII and Korea during the Korean Conflict for 18 months. Decorated with the Bronze Star, Air Force Commendation medal with three oak leaf clusters, Presidential Unit Citation, European Africa Middle East campaign ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal, Reserve Officers Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Korean Campaign Ribbon with 7 battle stars, National Defense Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the United Nations Ribbon.
Served in Alaska, Caribbean, Korea, Europe in Germany and Italy.
Promoted to Colonel in Regular Air Force in 1963. Retired May 1967 while serving in the Pentagon. Graduated from the University of Maryland with high honors with a Bachelor of Science degree.
He was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church and a member of the U.S. Air Force Association.
Survivors include a son and daughter in law: Michael J.F. Smith and Pat White of Richmond, Va.
Two daughters and son in law: Suanne Ferman of Wayne, W.Va. and Sharon Lee and Sinkler Boone of Orangeburg, S.C.
Ten grandchildren, seventeen great-grand children and one great-great-grand child.
One brother and sister in law: Clair Shadwell and Myrtle Smith of Huntington, W.Va.
A special thanks to nephew Gary Valee Smith and Dennis and Patty of Hospice.
Friends may call from 5-7 pm Sunday and 10:00 am until service time at the Reger Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington.
Jettie Loadholt
Jettie Loadholt, 96, of the Bamberg County Nursing Center, died Saturday, October 27, 2007, in the Bamberg County Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be announced by Carroll Mortuary of Bamberg.

Mrs. Loretta H. Dawkins
Funeral services for Mrs. Loretta H. Dawkins of 2323 Belleville Road, will be held at 12 p.m. October 29, 2007, in the Williams Chapel AME Church, with the Rev. Cesar Richburg officiating. Burial will be in the Belleville Memorial Gardens.
The casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m.
Mrs. Dawkins died October 25, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.
Alice Loretta H. Dawkins was born in Aiken, the daughter of Alice Hearn and George Harper. She was one of five children. Loretta attended Aiken County Public Schools. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech Pathology from South Carolina State College. Two of her accomplishments while in attendance at SCSU included reigning as First Attendent to Miss South Carolina State College and her thespian performances as part of the theater arts community at the college.
She met and married Lamar Dawkins Sr. and to this union three children were born, Lisa, Lamar Jr. and Lauren. Loretta was a very devoted, supportive and selfless wife, mother, and homemaker. She and her husband, Lamar owned and operated several businesses in the Orangeburg Community. She was a member of Williams Chapel AME Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Kappa Silhouettes, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and the South Carolina State University National Alumni Association, among other activities. Loretta enjoyed spending quality time with family, cooking, and reading.
She leaves to cherish a life of special memories, her husband of 46 years, Lamar Dawkins Sr.; two daughters, Lisa Dawkins and Lauren Dawkins Quick; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Lamar Dawkins Jr. and Enid B. Dawkins; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Pennye D. Hamilton and Dr. Charles Hamilton; five grandchildren, Leslie, Taylor, David Jr., Lamar III (Trey) and Jalen; her beloved sister, Algilene H. Hubbard and brother-in-law, Nathaniel Hubbard; her beloved brothers, William Proctor and Walter Proctor and sisters-in-law, Gerturde Proctor and Jean Proctor; sister-in-law, Virginia D. Pickard; brother-in-law, R. Perrin Dawkins; a beloved aunt and uncle, Clarice and Yeadon McCleary Sr.; six nieces, nine nephews, and a host of very dear relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, at Williams Chapel AME Church, Delta Sigma Theta/Omega Omega Service.

Mrs. Helen F. Whitmire
Mrs. Helen Furr Whitmire, 78, wife of William Edward "Bill" Whitmire, died Saturday in a North Charleston Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, in the chapel of Avinger Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dale Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the Eutawville Cemetery.
Mrs. Whitmire was born in Pineville, N.C. a daughter of the late Albert Furr and Ada Dry Furr. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, a member of the Daughters of the Nile and a member of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Whitmire was a retired cosmetologist.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a daughter, Jacquelyn Diane Singletary of Jacksonville, Fla.; son, William Archie Whitmire of Aiken; sister, Laura Merrett of Charlotte; brothers, James L. Furr of Fort Mill and Ray Albert Furr of Charlotte; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Master Alkeem Nukey Jamison
Funeral services for Master Alkeem "Nukey" Jamison, 4, of 426 Glenfield, Apt. D-13, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 29, 2007, in the Warren Chapel Baptist Church in Orangeburg, with the Rev. Willard Sabb officiating. Burial will be in the Belleville Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
Active pallbearers will be Kevin Frazier, Maurice Frazier, David Frazier, Lorenzo Frazier, Biship Ellison, and John Thompson.
Master Jamison died October 24, at Palmetto Health Richland following an extended illness.
He was born in Orangeburg, February 6, 2003, to Bonita Frazier and Alfonda Jamison. He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Dorothy Lee and great-grandparents, Donald and Brenda Frazier; and grandmother, Delisa R. Stroman.
Survivors include his mother, Bonita Frazier of the home; father, Algonda Jamison of Orangeburg; two sisters, Kenyra Frazier of the home, Alana Jamison of Orangeburg; two brothers, Allen Jamison, Alfonda Jamison Jr. of Orangeburg; maternal grandparents, Curtis (Claudia) Montgomery, Alexander (Dorothy) Hughes, all of Orangeburg; paternal grandparents, Betty J. Jamison and Vernon Thompson, all of Orangeburg; six aunts; six uncles; god mother, Vanessa Felder; god sisters, Marstasis Daniels, Aaliyah Hartwell, Quinnesha Feder; three special cousins, Brandon P. Frazier, Kevion Frazier, Carlos Shuler; special aunt, Shanice Stroman of Manhattan, N.Y. and a host of relatives and friends.
