Shirley Jean Via, 72, of 790 Windmill Way, Orangeburg, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at Crestview Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Proveaux and Adrian Haigler officiating.
Mrs. Via was born in Harrisburg, Ill., a daughter of the late Luther Riley and Rita Norman Gabriel. She was a retired secretary from Fafnir Bearing Co. Mrs. Via was a member of the Eastern Star Eutaw Chapter 162 and the V.F.W. No. 2779. She attended Crestview Baptist Church. She was the widow of Lloyd Calvin Via.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy “Susie” Carr and husband, Jim, of Orangeburg; stepson, Larry Via and wife, Amy, of Mocksville, N.C., granddaughter, Samantha Carr of Orangeburg; brothers, William (Betty) Gabriel, Murfreesboro, Tenn., Luther (Barbara) Gabriel, Murphy, N.C.; a sister, Juanita Smith of Chino, Calif.; numerous loving family and friends; loving pets, Gypsy and Lucky.

Mary Lee Cain Pearson
Funeral services for Mary Lee Cain Pearson, 91, of 1190 Pearson Road, Manning, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006, at Triumph Church, Davis Station, with Elder Sampson Pearson officiating.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
Mrs. Pearson died Friday, Dec. 1, following a prolonged illness.
She was born Aug. 4, 1916, in Jordan, a daughter of the late Peter and Estelle Brown Cain. She was a member of Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God Church. She was a member of the church choir, Sunday School teacher, Senior Usher Board and the Spring Hill OES No. 263 Eastern Star.
Survivors include four daughters, Helen (Harry) Williams of Baltimore, Lillie (Isaiah) Owens of Mount Vernon, N.Y., Ollie Pearson and Maxine Pearson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one son, Peter (Queenie) Pearson of Brooklyn; two stepdaughters, Thelma (Johnnie) Henderson of Hollywood, Fla., and Patsy Williams of Sumter; three sisters, Ruth C. Nelson, Elmara C. (Angelo) Sharpe and Ellen Johnson; four brothers, Willie Cain, Alvin (Eaddy) Cain, Thomas (Ann) Cain and George Cain; one brother-in-law, Elijah Ragin; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Dixon and Hattie Pearson; 25 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Saturday, Dec. 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Owens Funeral Home, Branchville, and from 5 to 8 p.m. at Triumph Church, Davis Station.

Mrs. Doris Sistrunk, 45, of 4521 St. Matthews Road, St. Matthews, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at her residence following a brief illness.

Private services for Dr. John Blackwell Rembert Sr., 83, of Orangeburg, will be held at a later date.
Dr. Rembert died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, at his home.
He was born March 10, 1923, in Manning to the late Haynes Richardson and Lillian Blackwell Rembert.
The family will be receiving friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the home, 1481 Riverbank Drive, Orangeburg.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or to the American Heart Association.

Vernetha Nimmons-Walker, BAMBERG

Funeral services for Vernetha Nimmons-Walker, 60, of 158 Creekside Drive, Bamberg, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, Bamberg. Burial will be in Bamberg Memory Gardens.
Ms. Walker died Monday, Dec. 11, at her residence.
She was born June 2, 1946, in Bamberg to Luvern Dowling-Nimmons and the late Jessie Nimmons Sr. Vernetha was educated in the public schools of Bamberg County and received her B.S. degree in 1981 from Voorhees College in Denmark. She went on to work 18 hours toward her master’s degree. She joined Orange Grove United Methodist Church at an early age and served on the youth choir and the gospel choir. In 1968 she married John Allen Walker and together they spent their early years in Germany, where he served in the U.S. Army. After John’s discharge from the U.S. Army they moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., and eventually back home to South Carolina. Vernetha worked in various jobs as a teacher in Bamberg School District One and Bamberg Job Corp. Preceding her in death were a daughter, Jenell Walker, and a sister, Gloria Nimmons.
Survivors include a son, Reginald Walker (Natasia) of Columbia; a daughter, Renee Brantley (Frederick) of Columbia; two grandchildren, Dorian and Christian Walker of Columbia; husband, John Allen Walker of Columbia; mother, Luvern Nimmons of Bamberg; two sisters, Catherine Barnwell (Freddie) of Bamberg and Fannie Simmons (Francis) of Columbia; and a brother, Jessie Nimmons Jr. (Mary) of Bamberg.
The family will be greeting friends in the fellowship hall of Orange Grove United Methodist Church, Bamberg after the burial.
Friends may call also call at the home of her mother, Luvern Nimmons, 3161 Orange Grove Road, Bamberg.
Carroll Mortuary of Bamberg will be in charge of the services.

Mrs. June Rhodes, 63, of Rocks Pond, Eutawville, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at Avinger Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. John Scott officiating. Burial will be private.
Mrs. Rhodes was born June 19, 1943, in Valdosta, Ga., a daughter of the late Kermit F. Oliver and Dariel Maude White Oliver. She was housekeeping supervisor at Rocks Pond, and will be remembered as someone that was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Survivors include her husband, Alfred J. Rhodes Jr. of the home; daughters, Michelle Revels of Eutawville and Lynn Gibbs of Canton, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at the funeral home.
