Jonathan Coyle, 70, of 215 Club Acres Boulevard, Orangeburg, South Carolina, died Monday, December 11, 2006, at his home.
There will be no prior calling hours. A private family memorial service will be held Friday, December 15 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of The Episcopal Church of The Redeemer.
Mr. Coyle was born July 20, 1936, in Hanover, New Hampshire, the son of Alma Elizabeth Batten Coyle and Dr. John Alfred Coyle. He grew up in Norwich, Vermont. He was a graduate of Norwich University.
He served in the Army for three years; at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, in The Engineering Research and Development Laboratory, in Greenland, in Polar Research and Development with The Corp of Engineers, and at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, as a fixed-wing aviator.
Mr. Coyle was an area and a division engineer with E. I. DuPont. He joined Applied Engineering as a project engineer, retiring as senior vice president and part-owner in 1994. He was a member of Sertoma and The Rotary Club, served on the Orangeburg Tech and Boy Scout advisory boards, and was a member of The Episcopal Church of The Redeemer.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Judith Webb Coyle of Orangeburg, two sons, John Wilder Coyle of Orangeburg and Patrick Lee Coyle of Atlanta, and a brother, Dr. Peter Coyle of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to The Episcopal Church of The Redeemer.

Rev. Essro O’Neal, of Augusta, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at Heartland Hospice in Augusta.

Burness Watson ‘Birdie’ O’Cain, SUMTER

Burness Watson “Birdie” O'Cain, 91, husband of 56 years to Hazel Beacham O"Cain, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Stephen Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg.
Active pallbearers will be Burke Watson, Bobby Rabon, Eddie Porter, Gene Patterson, Horace Curtis and Sammy LeNoir. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Sumter Optimist Club.
Born in Orangeburg, Mr. O’Cain was a son of the late Walter Hydrick O'Cain and the late Dolly Inabinet O"Cain. Mr. O'Cain was a graduate of the Orangeburg Business School and was employed by Boy Scouts of America from 1948-1980, when he retired as district representative and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver award.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he previously served as a Sunday School teacher, member of the Board of Trustees, the Administrative Board and as chairman of the Visitation Committee. He was a member of the Sumter Optimist Club, where he served as a former president and lieutenant governor. He was a former chairman of the Optimist Pinewood Derby and was chosen as the 1983 Optimist of the Year.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter L. O#, Cain and a sister, Dolly O'Cain Byers.
Survivors include his wife of Sumter; a son, Burness W. “Burney” O'Cain, Jr. of Charleston; and a sister, Mary O'Cain Felkel of Orangeburg.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150, or to the Boy Scouts of America Pee Dee Area Council.

Jerome N. Lockard, of 430 Corina St., Orangeburg, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg after a brief illness.

Funeral services for Norman Reed Hampton Sr., 52, of 950 Oaklane Drive, Orangeburg, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec.12, 2006, at Glover’s Funeral Home Chapel of Orangeburg, with the Rev. F. B. Stroman officiating. Burial will be in the Belleville Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg.
Active pallbearers will be cousins and friends of the family.
Mr. Hampton Sr. died Thursday, Dec. 7, at the residence of his son following an extended illness.
He was born Aug. 25, 1954, in Orangeburg County, a son of Mabel Reed Hampton and the late Rodgers Hampton Sr. At an early age, he affiliated himself with the Olive Grove Baptist Church. He served as a Junior Deacon, a church clerk and was a member of the Olive Grove Masonic Lodge No. 477.
He attended public schools of Orangeburg County and was 1972 graduate of O.W. High School. He retired from Palmetto Sash and Door and was employed with Hamptons’ Heating and Air until his health failed.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Simpson Hampton; his mother, Mabel Reed Hampton; two children, his devoted caregivers, Norman (Marie) Hampton Jr. of the home, Lashonda Hampton of Aiken; one stepson, Virgil Simpson of Aiken; four sisters, Doris (Franklin) Simpson of Cordova, Mary (Ronald) Brown, Beverly Price, and Roberta (Hayward) Seegars, all of Orangeburg; two brothers, Rodgers Hampton of Orangeburg, and Nelson Lamars Hampton of Bennettsville; four aunts, and one uncle, Jessie M. Hampton and Virgina Reed of Orangeburg, Frizell Reed of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Georgia Mae (Lacie) Powell of Cincinnati, Ohio; four grandchildren of the home, Kachez, Jeremiah, Jordan, and Joshua; five additional grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Lonnie Flood, 82, of 565 Enterprise St., Orangeburg, will be held at noon Monday, December 11, 2006, at St. Paul Baptist Church, with the Rev. Chausey Priester officiating. Burial will be in Orangeburg Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons and Trustees.
Mr. Flood died Monday, December 4, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg after an extended illness.
He was born December 19, 1920, in Orangeburg, a son of the late Jessie and Sallie Flood. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He attended the public schools of Orangeburg and was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church. He retired from the Orangeburg Cotton Mill and later the Orangeburg Sanitation Department. His wife, Mrs. Lela Brown and two daughters, Mrs. Gail Miller and Mary Louise Flood, preceded him in death.
Survivors include five grandchildren, Patricia Ann Flood, William Flood, Antonia Flood, Gary Flood and Olivia Flood; two great-grandchildren, Dimarus Flood and Dontre Flood; sister-in-law, Mary Dwight; two special nephews, Deselle and Odell Flood; and two special nieces, Elaine and Mary Flood.
Friends may call at the Newton Funeral Home of Orangeburg between 1 and 7 p.m. Sunday, December 10. At other times, friends may call at the home of Patricia Flood, 565 Enterprise St., and at the home of his nephew, Odell Flood, 183 Lindale St.
