MURRAY JOHNSON
Funeral services for Murray Junior Johnson, 72, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2005, at the Clyde Church of God. The Revs. Don Childers and Charles McLendon officiated with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnson died Thursday, July 14. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Murray M. and Comella Hall Johnson. He was retired from DuPont in Camden with 41 years of service and was active in the DuPont Breakfast Club which met once a month. He enjoyed playing golf, going to baseball games, watching NASCAR races, and loved his family.
Surviving are his wife, Rose Socha Johnson of Hartsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Terry L. and Sheila Johnson, Robbin A. and Vicki Johnson, all of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Jane J. and Robert Wallace of Hartsville; sister, Betty J. Hewitt of Hartsville; stepson, James L. Matthews of Florence; stepdaughters, Cheryl M. Russo, Deborah L. Matthews, Dawn M. Matthews, all of Florence, and Ashley L. Matthews of Columbia; grandchildren, Angie Gainey, Tonya Spell, Tara Kirkland, Terry Johnson, Jr., Christopher Wallace, Ashley Wallace, Nicklaus Johnson, Heather Matthews, Holly Matthews, Jessica Matthews, Justin Matthews, Payton Russo, Darby Russo, Thomas Russo; six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Murray Randall “Randy” Johnson; sisters, Marie Engel, Annie Mae Watkins, and Edith Huggins; brothers, James Johnson and Corbett Johnson.
CLEM McQUAIG, JR.
Funeral services for Clem Edward McQuaig Jr., 77, were held Monday, July 18, 2005, in the T.C. Kistler Memorial Chapel. Interment followed at Mechanicsville Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. McQuaig died Saturday, July 16. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Clem Edward and Mamie Moody McQuaig. Mr. McQuaig was a member of the Free Will Baptist Bible Church and the adult Sunday school class. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. Mr. Ed was known to give away candy at church earning him the nickname “Candy Man.” He also enjoyed giving out bananas at all the local nursing homes.
Mr. McQuaig was predeceased by his sister, Elma Coleman, and his brother, Dewey McQuaig.
Survivors include three daughters, Joyce (Billy) Perhealth, Ann (Richard) Rainwater, both of Wallace, and Renee (Danny) Bethea of Cheraw; one sister, Edna M. Melton of Hartsville; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
THELBERT SARVIS
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Thelbert O. E. Sarvis, 74, will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 20, 2005, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery.
Mr. Sarvis died Monday, July 18. He was born in Horry County, son of the late Doc Benjamin and Madge Elizabeth Jones Sarvis. He was married
to the late Connie Johnson Sarvis. He was retired from ESAB and enjoyed fishing and cooking. Mr. Sarvis was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are two sons, Ronnie Mitchell Sarvis of Wilmington, N.C., and Michael (Donna) Alford of Leeds, Ala.; two daughters, Dianne (William) Strawn and Jean (Ray) Peele, both of Darlington; six grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren; brother, Michael Wayne Sarvis of Thomasville, N.C.; and sisters, Betty Ann Fowler of Tabor City, N.C., and JoDean Sarvis Causey of High Point, N.C.
GARNER JONES
DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Garner Jones, 53, will be held at 4 p.m. today, July 20, 2005, at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church with interment following in Grove Hill cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Jones died Monday, July 17, at his home after an extended illness. He was born in Florence County, son of Katherine Harris Jones and the late Chafee Jones Jr. He was a 1971 graduate of St. John’s High School and attended Francis Marion University. He served his country with the United States Air Force in Okinawa, Japan and retired from Wellman Industries after 28 years. Garner was an extremely loyal Clemson fan. He loved his Tigers and he enjoyed picking at all of his Gamecock friends. He knew all about Clemson’s recruiting class and was really tickled when Tommy Bowden called him in his hospital room on July 10, 2005. He will be missed by many friends and family members. He was a member of IPTAY for 16 years and was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Florence, are his wife of 18 years, Michelle Anderson Jones of the home; his special father-in-law and mother-in-law, Malvin and Marilyn Anderson of Timmonsville; one sister, Lillian (Swint) Brunson of Darlington; two brothers, Chafee (Venita) Jones III of Darlington and Wilie (Maria) Jones of Florence; four nephews, Chad (Brandi) Jones, Hugh Brunson, James (Sandi) Brunson and William Brunson, all of Darlington; four nieces, Renee (Todd) Barrineau of Charlotte, N.C., Crystal (Jamie) Stanley, Eleni Jones and Alexandra Jones, all of Florence; one grandniece, Sierra A. Jones of Florence; and two grandnephews, Miles and Hayden Barrineau of Charlotte, N.C.
The family would like to thank the sixth floor staff at McLeod Regional Medical Center for their loving care and his doctors who gave him extra special care: Dr. Rajesh Bajaj and Dr. Deepak Chowdhary of McLeod and Dr. Angello Lin of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

WALTER C. SHAW
McBEE — Funeral services for Walter C. (WC) Shaw, 68, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2005, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home in Hartsville. The Rev. Gary Compton will officiate. Burial will be in the McBee cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, July 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Shaw, who died Tuesday, July 19, was born in Chesterfield County, a son of Lee Shaw and the late Maude Campbell Shaw. He was an active member of Hebron United Methodist Church in McBee, a retired electrician, and was employed by Nepera Chemical Co. in Harriman, N.Y., for 25 years.
Surviving are his wife: Virginia (Ginny) Vroom Shaw, McBee; two sons and daughters-in-law. Bruce and Diana Shaw of White Lake, N.Y., Mark and Brenda Shaw of McBee; four grandchildren, Jamie Shaw of Williamsburg, Va., David and his wife Allison Shaw of Pine Bush, N.Y., Eryn Shaw of Walden, N.Y., Chelsea Shaw of McBee; sister brother-in-law, Marilea and C.J. Collins of Wake Forest, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.

ALPHONSO McLEOD
Memorial services for Alphonso “Muddy Water” McLeod will be held 4 p.m. today, July 22, 2005, at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Bishop Joe Louis Robinson will officiate the service.
Mr. McLeod died at his residence on Tuesday, July 19, after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, the son of Mary McLeod Brown. He was raised by his grandparents, Queen and Corine McLeod. He was educated in the public schools of the county and graduated from Butler High School in 1972.
Surviving to cherish his loving memory are his wife, Bernadette F. McLeod of Hartsville; one son, Lamont Andre’ (Angie Ceasar) McLeod; one daughter, Bernadette Shonte’ (Marlowe) Forte’, both of Hartsville; one sister, Carolyn McLeod of Sanford, N.C.; one brother, Johnny Murphy of Baltimore, Md.; his extra special friends, Stevie an Sylvia “Bert” Rogers of Lydia; six granddaughters; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and very dear friends.
AARON M. MARLOWE
Memorial services for Aaron M. Marlowe, 68, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2005, at Bethel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Barbara Segars and Larry Brown will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends tonight, July 22, at the residence, 106 Walton St., Bethune.

Mr. Marlowe died Wednesday, July 20. Born in Blythewood, he was a son of the late Aaron M. and Allie Janelle Chapman Marlowe. He graduated from University High School in Columbia and attended the University of South Carolina. He retired in 1985 after 25 years of service as a purchasing agent at Horsman Doll in Cayce.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Ann Gardner Marlowe of Bethune; brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and JoAnn Marlowe of Napa Valley, Calif.; many wonderful relatives including his aunts, cousins, many special friends and a long time friend, Mrs. Ethel Eargle of Columbia.
MARY “NELL” COX
FORENCE–Funeral services for Mary Anell “Nell” Smith Cox, 49, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2005, in the Pisgah United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Terry Martin, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Cox died Thursday, July 21. She was born in Astoria, Ore. She was the daughter of Kate Hoffmeyer Ingram and the late Everette Vernon Smith Sr. She was instrumental in the formation of the softball program at Lake City High School and later became the head coach for the Darlington High School Lady Falcons softball team. Mrs. Cox worked for the Darlington County School District as an education interpreter for the deaf. She had also worked for the Department of Social Services with abused and abandoned children.
She was a devoted mother, wife and coach. In her spare time she enjoyed bowling. Mrs. Cox was predeceased by her husband, Darryl Cox and was a member of the Pisgah United Methodist Church.
Survivors in addition to her mother are one son, Darryl Lane Cox Jr. of Florence; one daughter, Tina (Dean) Teal of Summerville; four brothers, Thomas O. (Mary) Smith of Summerville, Everette V. (Sonya) Smith of Florence, Edward P. Smith of Lockport, NY and David A. (Laura) Weaver of Hampton, Va.; four sisters, Augusta Smith of Alaska, Melinda Kirven, Tracy (Jerry) Christmas, and Virginia Lewis, all of Florence; one grandchild, Nora Frances Teal of Summerville.
Pallbearers will be Jason Smith, Matthew Kirven, Jerry Christmas Jr., Will Lewis, Ryan Lewis and Hunter Hoffmeyer.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Junior Varsity and Varsity Lady Falcons softball teams.

WILLIE JAMES BELL
Funeral services for Willie James (Bill) Bell, 77, formerly of Honea Path, were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2005, at Pruitt Funeral Home with the Rev. Charlie Driggers officiating. Mr. Bell died Thursday, July 21, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Willie and Lillie Mae Motes Bell. He was the retired owner of Bill’s Best Buys and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are four brothers, Gene Bell, John Bell and Charles Bell, all of Honea Path, and Sammie Bell of Bishopville; two sisters, Nora Davis of Honea Path, and Ethel Malone of Niceville, Fla; numerous nieces and nephews; wife, Margaret Knowles of Hartsville. He was predeceased by one brother, Harold Babb Bell, and by one sister, Lula Mae Vaughn.
ELIZABETH (LIB) McMILLAN
JEFFERSON — Funeral services for Elizabeth (Lib) M. McMillan were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 24, 2005, at Jefferson Methodist Church, directed by Sutton Funeral Home of Pageland. Mrs. McMillan died Saturday, July 23. She was born April 16, 1911, in Hartsville, to the late Carl Theodore Miller and Jennie DuBose Miller. She was the widow of the late Johnnie McMillan. Mrs. McMillan was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a very Christian lady and was a devoted member of Jefferson Methodist Church for 70 years where she also taught Sunday School for more than 50 years.
Surviving are her sons and their wives, John Alex and Grace McMillan and Derry and Sue McMillan of Jefferson; grandsons, Richard, Bill and Keith McMillan; a very special and devoted granddaughter, Lori Middleton of Jefferson; nine great-grandchildren; and special care givers Elese Simpson and Becky Mills.
Mrs. McMillan was predeceased by her siblings, James, Earnest and C.T. Miller, Annie Festerman, Marguerite Rhodes and Jennie Smith.
JOHN WILTON CARTER
LAMAR — Services for John Wilton Carter, 90, will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the Lamar chapel of Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Carter died Monday, July 25, after a brief illness. Born in Lee County on Feb. 16, 1915, he was the son of the late Walter Lawrence Carter and Lila Marie Copeland Carter.
Mr. Carter was a member of Lamar First Baptist Church for 75 years, where he held numerous positions. He was a charter member of the Lamar Civitan Club, a Mason, and a member of Woodman of the World. He was an avid supporter of Clemson football and a member of IPTAY for more than 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Claude de Cherigny Carter; daughter, Cheree’ Carter of Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn C. and Paul Stewart of Florence; and grandson, Stephen Paul Stewart of Raleigh, N.C. He is also survived by three sisters, Virginia C. Fitzgerald of Raleigh, N.C., Elizabeth C. Ayers of Florence and Evelyn (Rivers) Scarborough of Lamar; a sister-in-law, Edelle K. Carter of Florence, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom were very special to him.
Mr. Carter was predeceased by two brothers, Walter Earl Carter and Willie James Carter.

EVELYN S. LANGSTON

Mrs. Langston died Sunday, July 24, at her home after a long illness. She was born in Florence, a daughter of the late Theo and Austin Sansbury. She attended school in Timmonsville and was a retired employee of Belk Department Store. Mrs. Langston was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Phillip’s Bible Class and the Anne Herbert Circle. She was a very devoted, loving wife and mother.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Adrian H. Langston of the home; a daughter, Susan L. Timmons of Florence; two grandchildren, Christopher M. Timmons and Summer L. Timmons, both of Florence; a sister, Emma Lou (Charles) Brown of West Columbia; a brother, Louis (Dorothy) Sansbury of Timmonsville and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Smith died Monday, July 25. He was born in Darlington County, son of Jack and Martha King Smith. He was a graduate of Hartsville High School and was a maintenance supervisor with North American Container. He was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church and attended Lamar United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to his parents of Hartsville, are his wife, Kathy McDonald Smith of Lamar; two sons, Garrett Smith and Robert Smith of the home; two brothers, Dempsey (Fran) Smith of Tennessee and Jimmy (Tammy) Smith of Darlington; mother-in-law, Mary McDonald of Lamar; brother-in-law, Buster McDonald of Lamar; sisters-in-law, Jane (Ted) Byrd and Becky Wood, all of Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
