MARSHALL DENNIS
Marshall Dennis, 55, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.
Born in Sumter County on Nov. 9, 1953, he was a son of Evelina Nelson Dennis and the late Michael Dennis.
The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 3850 Spencer Road, Rembert.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.
ATTIE J. MING
ATHENS, Ala. -- The funeral for Attie Johnson Ming, 81, of Athens, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Athens sanctuary. Dr. Edwin Jenkins and Joe Teal officiated.
Visitation was held at First Baptist Church Athens sanctuary from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Burial followed in Roselawn cemetery.
Mrs. Ming died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at the Cardiac Care Unit of Huntsville Hospital.
Mrs. Ming was born March 24, 1927, to Murray and Attie Johnson in Sumter. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens, taught Sunday school and volunteered for various positions in the church for many years including church secretary. She worked as a secretary for Dr. Bill Mitchell, superintendent for Athens City Schools, and secretary at West Athens Elementary for Principal James L. Cowart. After a 26-year absence from working toward her college degree while raising three children, Mrs. Ming graduated from Athens State University's School of Education with honors in 1979. She also worked for Calhoun Community College before retiring to spend more time with her husband, family, church, and friends, including the publishing of a cookbook entitled "Four Cups of History, " a collection of southern recipes from family and friends.
Mrs. Ming was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Allen Ming.
Survivors include daughters Marsha Ming White and husband, Alabama State Rep. Henry A. White, of Athens, and Missy Ming Smith and husband, Judge C. Lynwood Smith, of Huntsville, Ala.; son, Bill Ming and wife, Susan Newby Ming, of Athens; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Brothers and sisters are Don Johnson, Dale Johnson, Cliff Johnson and Mary Johnson Flowers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Attie J. Ming scholarship, Athens State University Foundation, P.O. Box 70, Athens, AL 35612.

James Alvin Corbett entered eternal rest on March 15, 2009, in Charlotte, N.C.

CHARLES HUE RAGIN
Charles Hue "Shimmy" Ragin's soul took flight to eternal rest on Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 28, 1954, in Sumter County, a son of the late Joseph "Charlie" and Christine Andrews Ragin. He attended the public schools of Sumter County. "Shimmy, " as he was affectionately known, was a hard worker and was willing to lend a helping hand whenever he could. He was employed at Martin Color Fi, with his most recent employment being at Anderson Transportation.
His memory will be forever cherished by his loved ones: a daughter, Nikki L. Williams of Sumter; a grandchild, Alaysia Grady of Sumter; two sisters, Ruth Mae Wilson of Sumter and Geneva "Gen" Bush of Bronx, N.Y.; five brothers, Emmanuel "Pee Wee" Ragin of Sumter, Ezekiel "Zeke" (Ann) Ragin of Bronx, Johnny "Oot" (Ruthie) Ragin of Florence, Wilbur "Butter" (Fayon) Ragin of Baltimore, Md., and Vernell Ragin of Hartford, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Ragin of Sumter; a brother-in-law, George Willis of Columbia; an uncle, James Ragin of Umatilla, Fla.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends that are deeply grieved by his untimely passing.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ida Lily Ragin Willis and Patricia Ragin; and three brothers, Charlie "Sonny" Ragin, William "Red" Ragin and Weldon Ragin.
Funeral services for Mr. Ragin will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Leon Winn, presiding, assisted by the Rev. Clinton Ceasar, Minister Emma Jones and Apostle Larry Carter, eulogist.
The family will leave the home at 1:15 p.m.
Burial will take place in Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

ROBERT MOISE
CHARLESTON -- Entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 16, 2009, Robert Blanding Moise, of Sumter and Charleston, widower of Ethel Claire McCutchen Moise, formerly of Sumter and Bishopville.
Mr. Moise was a 1943 graduate of Clemson College. He was a company commander; a member of the Pershing Rifles precision drill platoon; sports editor of The Tiger; and captain of the Clemson varsity basketball team. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater in the Marshall Island and attaining the rank of first lieutenant by war's end. He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves at Shaw Air Force Base, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was an early member of The Fortnightly Club of Sumter and was a writer for The Sumter Daily Item with a column, "Not That It Matters." He was an active part of the Sumter civic and business community, serving as a member of the Sumter Optimist Club and president of the Sumter County Historical Society, the Central Elementary School PTA and the Sumter County Zoning Board. He was a partner with his brother, Francis Marion Moise Jr., until his retirement in Moise Insurance Services and Moise Real Estate of Sumter.
Mr. Moise was born Dec. 21, 1921, in Sumter, a son of the late Francis Marion Moise and Ella Pauline Blanding Moise.
He was predeceased by brothers, McFaddin Moise and Francis Marion Moise Jr.; and a sister, Pauline McFaddin Moise Harritt.
His two surviving brothers are James DeLeon Moise of Stateburg and Francis David Moise of Dallas; and he is survived by his children, Ben and Anne Moise, Scott Moise and Bailey Crump of Charleston, Warren and Lucie Moise of Mount Pleasant, Michael and Teresa Moise of Loris and Claire Moise and Bill Thorpe of Columbia. Mr. Moise had five grandchildren, Melissa McLeod of St. Matthews, Sarah Moise Young of San Francisco, Michael Moise Jr. of Orinda, Calif., David Crump of Charleston and Bracey Moise of Mount Pleasant; and three great-grandchildren, Margaret Anne and Sarah Elizabeth McLeod of St. Matthews and Michael Andrew Moise of Orinda.
Services will be graveside at 1 p.m. Thursday at the the Bishopville Presbyterian Church cemetery, 215 S. Main St., Bishopville, with Dr. Timothy Osment, pastor of Loris Presbyterian Church, officiating.

NORRIS E. SUTTON II
Norris Edward Sutton II, 49, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
He was born April 16, 1959, in Sumter, son of Thelma Grant Sutton and the late Norris Sutton Sr.
The family will receive friends at the home, 214 W. Oakland Ave.

MAMIE S. BLACKWELL
Mrs. Mamie Smith Blackwell, wife of John K. Blackwell, died Sunday March 15, 2009, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia. She was the daughter of the late James and Annie Smith. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
She was a licensed cosmetologist and a retired employee of Richland County District One Transportation Department.
Survivors are her husband, John K. Blackwell; one daughter, Alessandra (Russell) Staley; one son, John K. Blackwell Jr.; four sisters, Zinnie Dantzler, Dorothy Rivers, Jennie Johnson and Gloria Williams; five grandchildren and a mother-in-law, Pauline G. Blackwell.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem Baptist Church (CP) with burial in Memorial Gardens.

MICHAEL L. SIMON
Michael "Mike" Levern Simon, 45, died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at his residence in Sumter.
Born in Sumter County, he was the seventh of eight children born to Ruby M. Billie Simon and the late Amos Simon Jr. He attended the public schools of Sumter County and later was a self-employed landscaper.
Surviving are his mother, Ruby M. Billie Simon of the home; three sisters, Evelyn (Henry) McFadden, Juanita Simon and Martha A. McDuffie, all of Sumter; three brothers, James (Robbie) Simon of Houston, Texas, Larry Simon and Steve A. (Teresa) Simon, both of Sumter; three aunts, Mattie L. (Jake) Howard, Ruby J. Billie and Edith Billie of Sumter; one uncle, Walter Simon of Sumter; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Congruity Presbyterian Church, USA with the Rev. Randolph Green, eulogist, assisted by Minister Alfreda Johnson, the Rev. James Carter Jr. and the Rev. Ranzy McFadden Jr. Interment will follow in the Billie Church cemetery.
Mr. Simon will be placed in the church for viewing at 10 a.m. until the hour of service.
The public may view Mr. Simon from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. today at the Palmer Memorial Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the Simon residence, 3650 Congruity Road.
Those wishing to depart with the processional should arrive at the Simon residence no later than 10 a.m. Saturday.

IDA MAE C. McCAIN
Ida Mae Chennault McCain, widow of James T. McCain Sr., died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Tignall, Ga., she was the third of four children born to the late John and Rhoda Ashmore Chennault. Mrs. McCain earned a bachelor of arts degree in education from Morris College and graduated in the Class of 1935. She completed further studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. She taught in the District 17 public school system for more than 40 years. Her passion for teaching touched the lives of many students at Bates, Savage Glover and Millwood elementary schools. She was a former principal at Savage Glover School. She was a faithful member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities including women's ministry, church school ministry and the golden age fellowship ministry. In her spare time, she was an avid bridge player and was a member of the Bridgettes, The Retirees Morning Club and the Ace of Spades Club. She was known for her beautiful yard, with its famous azaleas, which were featured in The Item on numerous occasions. She took great pride in being a member of the Green Thumb Garden Club.
In addition to her parents and husband of 68 years, she was preceded in death by three siblings, Paul Chennault, Silas Chennault and Mattie Channault Lofton.
Surviving are two daughters, Arnetta M. Ellison and Joyce (Donald) McCain-Doty, both of Chicago, Ill.; a son, James T. McCain Jr. of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Brent D. Pogue of San Francisco, Calif., Brenda J. Pogue of Chicago and James T. McCain III and Jordan A. James-McCain, both of Atlanta; a niece, Deloris Williams of Aurora, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Marguerite McCain of Sumter; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 325 W. Fulton St., Sumter, with the pastor, the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame, officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
Mrs. McCain will be placed in the church at noon for public viewing until the hour of service.
The public may view Mrs. McCain after 5 p.m. Sunday at Palmer Memorial Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Palmer Memorial Chapel and at other times, 317 W. Bartlette St., Sumter.

Gregory Alonzo Wright aka Osiris Kafu, 52, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at his home.
Born July 8, 1956, in Norfolk, Va., he was a son of Flossie Wright-Littles.

Emanual Lorenzo Blanding, 23, husband of Ebony Smith Blanding, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, in Watertown, N.Y.
Born Feb. 27, 1986, in Sumter County, he was a son of Matthew Blanding Sr. and Tonya Mack-Canty.
