Dyson, Mary Linda
MANNING – Mary Linda Dyson, 57, died Monday, February 9, 2009, at her home.
Born September 2, 1951, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Abie and Mary Crews Dyson. She was of the Baptist faith, and attended Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are a son, Ivy Dargon Beard of Manning; three sisters, Carol Moseley and her husband David, Ruth Graham and her husband Watson, and Gayle Pritchard and her husband Dewey, all of Manning; three brothers, Edward Dyson and his wife Mary of Manning, Robert Dyson and his wife Betty of Sumter, and Abie Dyson Jr. and his wife LeAnn of Manning.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Dyson.
Graveside services were held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2009, in the June Burn cemetery, with the Rev. Morris Smith officiating.

Frierson, Tanner F.
MANNING – Tanner Frierson Frierson, 91, widow of Clarence Leroy Frierson, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009 in Lexington Medical Center.
Born February 14, 1917, in Manning, she was the daughter of Author and Magdalene Guess Frierson, and was a member of Manning Second Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Noonie Lee Hodge of Manning, Cindy Myers of Goose Creek, and Dianne F. Taylor of Lexington; four sisters, Lee White of Manning, Becky Rolland of Alcolu, Pansy Frierson of Georgia, and Lethea Fleming of Manning; a brother, Eddie Frierson of Sumter; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three daughters, Judy Loretta Avant, Shirley Childers, and Lillian DuBose.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday in Manning Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. Pec Chatham officiating. Burial was in Manning cemetery.

Gibbons, Ed
MANNING – Edward Guy “Ed” Gibbons, Jr., 46, husband of Lisa Liscio Gibbons, died Sunday, February 1, 2009.
Born March 18, 1962, in Sumter, he was the son of Edward Guy “Slick” and Kay McFaddin Gibbons. He was a businessman, owner of Ed Gibbons Enterprise and Action Auto and Boat Sales, worked in the family business (Clarendon Auto Parts), and was owner of Ed Gibbons Racing. Ed had been racing for over thirty years, and was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of Manning; parents of Manning; two sons, Edward Guy “Gib” Gibbons III of Orlando, FL and Kerry Lynn Gibbons of Manning; a sister, Gina Wilson and her husband Joe of Manning; nieces and nephews, Celia, Olivia, Macey and Joe Wilson, Corey, Chase and Summer Corbett, and Thomas Stoia.
Graveside services were held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2009, in Clarendon Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Debra Quilling Smith officiating. Pallbearers were Mickey Plowden, Shawn Whittle, Billy Cagle, Paul Newman, Robbie Lane, Curt Lee, Dee Haddock, and Mike Thomas.

Hodge, Travis
GREELEYVILLE - Mary Travis Eaddy Hodge, 74, widow of Scott Harvin Hodge, Sr., died Monday, February 23, 2009, at her home in Greeleyville.
Born October 7, 1934, in Greeleyville, she was a daughter of the late John Wilford and Senora Melvina Cox Eaddy. She was a homemaker, a retired seamstress, and member of Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church in Manning.
Surviving are four sons, Scott Harvin Hodge, Jr., Tony Hodge, Donald (Diane) Hodge, and Todd (Tammy) Hodge, all of Greeleyville; one daughter, Polly (Jerry) Welch of Manning; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; two brothers, G.R. Eaddy of Kingstree and Trise Eaddy of Greeleyville; four sisters, Margurette Tobias of Manning, Genevieve Richburg of Greeleyville, Patricia Tisdale of Kingstree, and Rita Eaddy of Columbia.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2009, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. Ed Watson, Donald Duncan, and Charlie Salter officiating. Burial will follow in Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence, 20 Cod Lane, Greeleyville.

Kinley, Edna Ryals
MANNING – Edna Ryals Kinley, 81, widow of James C. Kinley, died Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter.
Born June 28, 1927, in Upatoi, GA, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Claudia Lawrence Ryals. She was of the Presbyterian faith.
Surviving are a daughter, Ann Abernathy of Pelion; a son, Michael Kinley of Manning; a sister, Frances Coker of Columbus, GA; two brothers, Rufus Ryals of Pavo, GA, and Franklin Ryals of Columbia, SC; a grandson, Clint Kinley; a granddaughter, Amanda Kinley McDonald; and five great grandchildren, Andrew Kinley, Ceria Kinley, Madison Kinley, Evelyn McDonald, and Dexter McDonald.
Graveside services were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2009 at Greenlawn cemetery in Columbia, with the Rev. Garland Hart officiating.

SUMTER – Martha Ellen Kinsey, 95, died Wednesday, February 4, 2009, in Tuomey Healthcare System.
Born February 24, 1913, in Caroline Alberta, Canada, she was the daughter of Edward and Florence Edith Haughton Boothby. She was a retired restaurant hostess, and a resident of McElveen Manor.
Surviving are a son, Robert A. Kinsey, Jr. and his wife Sandra of Sumter.
A graveside service was held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, February 6, 2009 in Sunset Memory Gardens in Charlotte, NC.
Mann, William Eugene "Billy"
MANNING - William Eugene "Billy" Mann, 68, died Thursday, February 26, 2009, at Loris Community Hospital.
Born September 18, 1940 in Sumter, he was a son of the late James S. and Willie Mae James Mann. He worked in the manufactured housing industry and was a US Army veteran.
Surviving are two sisters, Shirley Mann of Manning and Janet Mann of Woodstock, Georgia; and one brother, James Mann, Jr. of Sumter.

Singletary, Margaret Juanita
SUMTER – Margaret Juanita Singletary, 86, widow of Rollie K. Singletary, died Monday, February 2, 2009, in Sumter Health and Rehab.
Born June 17, 1922, in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Edgar Plowden and Frances Tomlinson Epps. She was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Emma Jean Charles of Sumter; three sons, Douglas Hardy of Lake City, Francis Belk of Sylvania, GA, and Allen Hardy of Sumter; and a brother, Douglas Epps of New Zion; and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, James T. “Johnny” Hardy; a sister, Ruth Woods; and three brothers, Guy, Mack and Hugh Epps.
A graveside service was held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 5, 2009, in Midway Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Smith, James Archer III
SUMMERTON – Ret. LTC James Archer Smith III, 66, husband of Linda Marquis Smith, died Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born February 17, 1943, in Coral Gables, FL, he was the son of the late James Archer Smith, Jr. and the late Florence Roberts Smith. He was a United States Army retired LTC, having served his country for twenty-three years. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama, where he played football for Bear Bryant.
Surviving are his wife of Summerton; a daughter, Susan L. Smith of Fayetteville; two stepbrothers, Randy Smith and Ross Smith, both of Washington; and a sister, Beverly Vetter of Parker, CO.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2009, in Lake Marion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Kennedy officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Smith, Robert Wesley Jr.
SUMTER – Robert Wesley “Bob” Smith, Jr., 59, husband of Alma Hodge Smith, died Friday, February 13, 2009, at his home.
Born March 11, 1949, in Sumter, he was the son of Rose Cole Smith and the late Robert Wesley Smith Sr. He was a retired truckdriver, a United States Army veteran of the Viet Nam War, having served three tours of duty in Viet Nam, and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife of Sumter; his mother of Sumter; a son, Robert Wesley Smith III of Bainbridge, GA; two stepsons, Hansel Hodge and his wife Sam of Alcolu, and Mark D. Hodge of Sumter; three grandsons, Wallace “Buddy” Hodge and Orry Hodge of Alcolu, and Mark Douglas Hodge Jr. of the home; a granddaughter, Kelcey McAlister of Hodges; two brothers, Richard Smith and his wife Peggy, and William Smith and his wife Debbie, all of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marsha Smith Skey.
Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 15, 2009, at Providence Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Harold Greene officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Comrades of the Sumter VFW.

Stone, Ruth A.
MANNING – Ruth Aline Rhame Stone, 91, widow of George S. Stone, died Monday, February 2, 2009, in Sumter Health & Rehab.
Born November 3, 1917, in Silver, she was the daughter of the late Frank Davis and Camilla Floride Cannon Rhame, and was first married
to Caston D. Ingram. Mrs. Stone was a member of Home Branch Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher. She was an associate member of St. James Lutheran Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Deborah Alford and her husband Mike of Sumter; two sons, Charles C. “Buck” Ingram and his wife Carol of Sumter, and George M. Stone and his wife Sylvia of Camden; two brothers, Woodrow A. Rhame of Manning, and Warren D. Rhame of Sumter; five grandchildren, Charles C. Ingram, Jr. and his wife Sandy, Christopher Dale Ingram and his wife Terri, Craig Gamble and his wife Noelle, Steven James Alford, and Meredith Alford West and her husband Michael; and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at Home Branch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert W. Haynes officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Chuck Ingram, Chris Ingram, Craig Ingram, James Alford, Mike Rhame, and Michael West. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Home Branch Baptist Church.

Walker, Thomas Irby
SUMMERTON - Thomas Irby Walker, 79, beloved husband of Norvelle Plowden Walker, died at his home in Summerton on February 5, 2009. Born in Summerton on August 24, 1929, he was the son of Claude Townes Walker and Norma Wilkins Walker of Summerton. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Irby Walker and Alice Ezell Walker of Summerton. His maternal grandparents were John Terrill Wilkins and Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Wilkins of Hendersonville, N.C. In addition to his wife of fifty-one years, Mr. Walker is survived by four children: Dr. Maryanne Walker Moore of Atlanta, T. I. Walker, Jr. of Summerton, Charles Nelson Walker (Inger) of Manning, and Elizabeth Walker McCurry (Matt) of Mt. Pleasant. . Other survivors include five grandchildren: Matthew Singleton Moore, IV of Atlanta, Alexandria Caroline Walker and Charles Nelson Walker, Jr. of Manning, and Margaret Eleanora McCurry and Lucien Mattison McCurry of Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Walker is also survived by a brother, Claude Townes Walker, Jr. of Summerton and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters: Elizabeth Walker Garber and Margaret Walker Everett. Mr. Walker graduated from Summerton High School and The Citadel (Class of 1950). He served during the Korean War and participated in the Inchon Invasion and the first seven major battles. A member of the 31st Regimental Combat Team, he was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the bronze star with a 'V' for valor, the Korean Service medal with seven service stars, and the Sygmon Rhee Presidential Citation. After his service in Korea he returned to join his brother as a partner in Clarendon Gas Company, a propane and Whirlpool dealership. He retired after forty-six years. Mr. Walker was a member of the Julius A. Mood American Legion Post 35, and a 50 year member of the Summerton Masonic Lodge. He was an Elder in the Summerton Presbyterian Church and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School class. He was a past president of the Bank of Summerton and served as an advisory member of the NBSC board. He was a past member of the Summerton Lions Club and served as a volunteer fireman for many years. The family received visitors from 1 to 2 pm in the Rankin Chapel of Summerton Presbyterian Church, 16 Cantey St., on Saturday February 7th. The memorial service was at 2 pm in the sanctuary with burial in Summerton Evergreen cemetery.

Wall, Linda
MANNING – Linda Stancil Wall, wife of Rondal J. “Ron” Wall, died Thursday, February 5, 2009, at her home in Manning.
Born November 30, 1948, in Raleigh, NC, she was the daughter of the late Reuben R. and Nell Walters Stancil. She was a retired registered nurse for the State of South Carolina, and a member of Manning First Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of Manning; a son, Jay Wall and his wife Amanda of Manning; a daughter, Parker W. Johnson and her husband Michael of Manning; her constant companion, her dog Buddy, and her granddogs, Oscar and Edison; two brothers, Russell Stancil and his wife Rita of Garner, NC, and George “Skippy” Stancil and his wife Sandra of Cary, NC; and a sister, Carolyn Gardner and her husband Ronnie of Garner, NC.
Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday in Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Rob Pierce and Dr. Bev Kennedy officiating.
