ALETHEA C. PRATHER
LANHAM, Md. -- Alethea Conyers Prather, 90, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham, Md. Born April 3, 1914, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Isreal and Isabella Johnson Conyers.
She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined New Hope UME Church in Pinewood.
Survivors include two sons, Ralph DesChamps and Williams Conyers, both of Pinewood; two daughters, Wilhelmina McPherson of Newark, N.J.; and Rudy DesChamps of Bowie, Md.; one sister-in-law, Maggie Conyers of Patterson, N.J.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope UME Church with the Rev. Leroy T. James officiating. Burial will follow in the New Hope cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the home of her daughter, Wilhelmina McPherson, 300 Fulton Manning Road, Hwy. 261, Pinewood.

LAMAR D. THOMAS
Lamar Daniel Thomas, 48, husband of Beatrice Davis Thomas, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 4, 1956, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Gifford Thomas and the late Mattie Miley Thomas.
He was educated in the public schools of New York. He furthered his education at New York City Community College and the Kershaw Vocational School. He accepted Christ at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter, where he faithfully served with the Food SHARE Ministry, the Brotherhood and youth ministry.
Survivors include his devoted and beloved wife, Beatrice Davis Thomas; two sons, Cortne D. Thomas of South Carolina and Tione L. Thomas of New York; two sisters, Rosetta Joseph of New York and Ruth Moore of Georgia; one brother, Leroy Parketer; three sisters-in-law, Brenda Davis-Smith, Rosalind N. Davis-Williams and Sherry Davis, all of New York; three brothers-in-law, Pyron Davis, Mark Smith and Lawrence Williams, all of New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Gilford Thomas.
A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary, 312 S. Main St., Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

MAXWELL BENSTON
Maxwell Benston, 80, husband of Ivory Montgomery Benston, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home.
He was born March 30, 1924, in Hyde County, N.C., the son of the late Thadius and Ivory Lee Collins Benston.
Mr. Benston was educated in the public schools of Brooklyn, N.Y. He retired from the New York Housing Authority after working there for many years. While living in Brooklyn, he was affiliated with the Wayside Baptist Church. After relocating to Sumter, he became a covenant partner of Enon Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a member of the golden age ministry, senior choir ministry and the men's ministry.
Survivors include his loving wife, Ivory M. Benston of the home; one son, Maxwell Lee Benston Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one grandson, Amir Tarik Benston of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Keys Benston of Raleigh, N.C.; four sisters-in-law, Earline Jones, Addrana Jones and Luefenia Glisson, all of Sumter; two brothers-in-law, Eugene (Rebecca) Montgomery and Vernon Rhames, both of Sumter; two aunts, Mamie (Columbia) Harrison of Belhaven, N.C., and Mary Exum of Brooklyn, N.Y., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Enoch Benston; three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Enon Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. The Rev. Sanley F. Hayes Sr., pastor, will officiate, assisted by ministers James Goodman, Loretta Jones and Georgia Walker. Burial will follow in Cain cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 890 David Austin Road, Wedgefield.

GALE BAKER
Gale Baker, 40, wife of Pressley Baker, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005.
Born May 12, 1964, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Susie Mae Johnson Brown and the late Lynn Brown.
Mrs. Baker was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a member of Howard Chapel AME Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Tuwanda Brown, Victoria Baker and Laquetta Baker, all of the home; stepfather J.C. Andrew of Sumter; six sisters, Claudia (Larry) Epps of Mayesville, Kerina (Eugene) Epps and Wanda (Harry) Smith, all of New Zion, Patricia (Corral) McCray, Gertha (Wydel) Fullard and Jinnie (Cydel) Butler, all of Lynchburg; two brothers, David (Diane) Brown and Tommy Epps of Lynchburg; six grandchildren, Tyreko Brown; Shontell Brown, Charlie Brown, Aleshia Baker, Amani Baker and Raequan Baker, all of the home; and a very special friend, Cecil Taylor of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lynn Brown; two brothers, Charlie Brown and Lynn Brown Jr.; and two sisters, Liddie Mae Brown and Mary Miller.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Howard Chapel AME in New Zion. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
The Rev. Edwards Roberts, pastor, will officiate.
Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.

TURBEVILLE -- Edith Emma McLeod Barwick, 80, widow of William Edward Barwick, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.
Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Seamon Watson McLeod and the late Bessie Geddings McLeod. She attended Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include three sons, Willie McLeod and his wife, Sandra, of Blackville, Edward Robert Barwick and Joie Barwick and his wife, Ruth, all of Sumter; three daughters, Susan Barwick and her husband, William Hernandez, of Kingstree, Cassie Cruz and her husband, Felipe, of Turbeville, and Betty Barnhill and her husband, Wade, of Summerville; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jobe McLeod of Sumter; and a sister, Mel Ingram of Darlington.
She was preceded in death by two sons, George Barwick and Benjamin Barwick.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Brandon Poston officiating.
Burial will be in the Sumter cemetery.

Albert Johnson, 49, departed this life on Saturday night, Feb. 19, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
He was born Feb. 19, 1956, in Clarendon County, a son of the late Henry Johnson and Ethel Mae Sweat Johnson.
The family is receiving friends at the home, 1684 Sweatt Road (Old Georgetown Road), Manning.

Dyson's Home for Funerals sorrowfully regrets to announce the passing of Cynthia Nixon Brown, 48, who entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of the late Frank and Mamie Ruth Green Nixon. She was the wife of John Lee Brown.

Harold Jones, 66, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at his home.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Raymond L. Jones and the late Vivian Geddings Jones.
Mr. Jones was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer and was formerly employed by Interstate Tractor in Bishopville.
Survivors include a son, Hal Jones of Sumter, and a sister, Betty Brunson and her husband, Charles, of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Jones.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Burgess officiating.
Burial will be in the Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jay Carter, P.O. Austin, Calvin Geddings, Jimmy Hodge, J.G. Harvin and Ed Parnell.

ELIZABETH G. TINDAL
BISHOPVILLE -- Elizabeth Gatewood Clark Tindal, 97, widow of Hughey Tindal, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at McCoy Memorial Nursing Center.
Born July 7, 1907, in Camden, she was a daughter of the late Arnold Harvey Clarke and the late Virginia Randolph Clarke.
Mrs. Tindal was a member of the Bishopville Presbyterian Church. She was a "Winthrop girl" and a graduate of Coker College with a degree in music. She taught piano and organ in Bishopville. She directed both the children's choir and the adult choir at Bishopville Presbyterian Church for many years. She fell in love with music at a very early age and devoted a large part of her life to sharing this gift with numerous children, family and friends. She was a strong advocate of making the most of God-given talents and instilled this in all her students. She leaves a legacy of many talented musicians.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Harvey Clarke (Susan) of Camden, Mary Clarke O'Quinnn of Camden, Virginia W. Ramsey (Gayle) of Brevard, N.C., Clarke Wellborn (Alice) of Brevard, N.C., Lois Zemp, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold Harvey Clarke, a sister, Virginia Randolph Wellborn, and a nephew, John Zemp.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Bishopville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ken Hicks officiating.
Burial will follow in the Quaker cemetery in Camden.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the fellowship hall of Bishopville Presbyterian Church and other times at 416 North Main St., Bishopville.
