Mitchell moved to Rochester, N.Y., in the mid 40's. On Jan. 11, 1949, Mitchell was united in holy matrimony to Martha Gathers. She had two young sons, Robert and Griffin. Mitchell was a father to them.

In 1951, Mitchell and Martha graciously opened up their Adam Street home and started a prayer band in their living room. This prayer band grew at an enormous rate, causing them to move from the living room to a tent in the backyard. This move opened the door for even more to come and be a part of this ministry. As God continued to draw souls to this mission, they soon purchased a building on the corner of Troup and Ford streets. As this vision continued, a few years later they built what is now known as the Greater Adams Street Church of God By Faith, where he served diligently for all these years. He touched so many lives, and people loved him dearly. He was always willing to help people in need. He will be greatly missed.

He leaves to cherish fond memories, three sons, Mitchell (Catherine), Robert and Griffin (Lillian); two sisters, Martha Stokes of the home and Ruth S. (Joe) Ham of New York City; two brothers, Alvin (Janie) of Jacksonville, Fla., and James of New York City; numerous grand and great-grandchildren; one aunt, Lilly Stokes; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and caring friends.
