MANNING -- Funeral service for Dean "Dot" Mack Jr. will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. George P. Windley officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg.
Burial will follow in the Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Virginia Bowman, 414 Drayton St., Manning.

BISHOPVILLE -- Sarah Wilson Joye died Tuesday morning, July 13, 2004, at McCoy Memorial Nursing Center.
Born June 15, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Gilbert Wilson and Hattie King Wilson. She attended the public schools of Lee County. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are one brother, George (Mary) Wilson; one sister, Rosa Lee McDuffie; one sister-in-law, Mary Lee Peterson, all of Bishopville; three special caregivers, Mattie Mickens, Rosa "Ann" Stuckey and Loretta "Retta" Thomas, all of Bishopville.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. today at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Vernon Holland officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mark cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at 231 Gin St.

WADE TAYLOR Jr.
LAKE CITY -- Mr. Wade Taylor Jr., 51, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Carolinas Hospital System, Florence.
Born May 17, 1953, in Hemingway, he was a brother of Minister John Taylor.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 124 Ripple Lane, Lake City, SC 29560.
Services will be announced by Green's Funeral Home of Lake City.
EMANUEL GIBSON
MANNING -- Emanuel Gibson, 80, widower of Evelene Dingle Gibson, died July 9, 2004, at his residence, 1237 Palm Spring Drive, Davis Station.
Born Dec. 25, 1923, in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Tossie Gibson and Julia Clark Gibson. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Laurel Hill AME, where he served as a trustee of the church. He was a member of the Job Lodge and a member of the NAACP. He was also one of the first singers with the Jeremiah Singers.
Survivors include four sons, James (Sarah) Gibson of Manning, Albert Gibson, Minister Lee Samuel (Valerie) Gibson and Milton (Julia) Gibson, all of Lexington; four daughters, Eva Gibson of the home, Julia Ann (Minister Steve) Munns and Artril Enwere, both of Fayetteville, N.C., and Julia (Pastor Joe) Ellison of Lexington; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Lucinda, and three brothers.
The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Laurel Hill AME Church, Davis Station, with the Rev. Ronnie Brown, pastor, officiating, assisting Elder Abraham Gibson, Pastor Joe Ellison and Minister Marcus E. Gibson.
Burial will be in Carolina Johnson cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1237 Palm Spring Drive, Davis Station community of Clarendon County.

Fannie Mae McLeod Archie, 76, of Rembert, widow of Willie B. Archie, died Saturday, July 10, 2004.
Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Agnes Young McLeod.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Rafting Creek Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

SARAH HOLDEN
MANNING – Sarah Bernice Moore Holden, 90, widow of John S. Holden, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Mariner Health Care of Sumter East.
Born April 25, 1914, in Center Hill, Fla., she was a daughter of the late John Franklin and Lillian Alberta Odom Moore. She was a retired clerk from Dickson's Pharmacy and a member of Manning United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and member of the Nelle Wells Circle.
Surviving are a daughter, Gwendolyn Holden Kinsey of Sumter; a grandson, John K. Kinsey and wife, Karen, of Sumter; two great grandsons, Britton and Michael Kinsey, both of Sumter; and a number of cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Debra Quilling officiating. Burial will follow in Manning cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, and at other times at the residence of John and Karen Kinsey, 130 Pearson Road, Sumter.

SCRANTON -- James Ashton Matthews, 54, died Friday, July 16, 2004 at his residence.
Mr. Matthews was born in Florence County; a son of Ruby Evans Matthews and the late Bobby Matthews. He was a farmer and a member of Scranton Baptist Church. Mr. Matthews was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda Matthews of Garden City and Renee Matthews of Coward; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Micah Krusen of Garden City; his mother, Ruby Evans Matthews of Scranton; two brothers, Bobby J. Matthews of Darlington and Mark L. Matthews of Scranton; four grandchildren, Ashton Krusen of Garden City, Beth Flowers, Josey Flowers and Shannon Thomas, all of Coward.
Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004 in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel.

Ray Knotts, 74, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at a local nursing center.
Born in Lamar, he was a son of the late major Knotts and the late Pherbia Garland Knotts.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Kapfinger of Lynchburg; a son, Dallas Knotts of Lamar; a sister, Sarah Francis of Hartsville; a brother, David M. Knotts of Sumter; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a loving companion of 16 years, Inez Grooms of Sumter.
The family will receive friends on today at the home of his son, 1201 Bo Smith Rd., Lamar.

NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y -- Maude Johnson Dow, 87, wife of the late Jessie James Dow, died July 16, 2004, at Long Island Jewish Hospital.
Mrs. Dow was born Jan. 17, 1917, in Rimini, S.C. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Sarah James Johnson.
The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Michelle Bosier, 8895 Camp McBoykin Road, Rimini, S.C.

VIVA TOUCHBERRY THOMAS
Viva Touchberry Thomas, 93, died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Tuomey Health Care Systems.
Born in Paxville, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Benjamin Touchberry and the late Anna Agnes Peavy Touchberry.
Mrs. Thomas was twice married
, first to the late Liston Bailey, Sr. and then to the late Clyde E. Thomas. She was a member of Lake Marion Baptist Church of Santee.
Surviving are a son, Liston H. Bailey, Jr. and his wife, Florence; a daughter-in-law, Renee Bailey; a son-in-law, Roy Dickerson all of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Lila Holland of Florence; Nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a number of great-great grandchildren and two dear friends, Margaret Kelly and Heidi Teague both Sumter.
Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by a son. Marion Bailey; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Dickerson; three brothers, Carisle Touchberry, Joseph Rollin Touchberry and Mottie Edward Touchberry; two sisters, Ollie Lee T. Galloway and Lottie Steverson.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Tripp officiating.
Burial will follow in the Sumter cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Powell, Dean Quesenberry, Brad Dennard, Bruce Reynolds, Mobley Touchberry, Bobby Odom and Wayne Galloway.
Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons, Larry Dickerson, Tommy Bailey, W.M. Dickerson, Marion Bailey, Jr., Joey Bailey, Robbie Boykin, Brad Dickerson and Michael Dalton.

STEVE W. VEREEN
Steve W. Vereen, age 36, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at Palmetto Health Richland.
Boon in Greenwood, he was the son of Samuel and Mary Vereen of Greenwood, S.C.
He was a U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant with 15 years of service. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal on four occasions for Meritorious Service. He serves as the Deputy Chief Logistics, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron, Shaw Air Force Base. He also proudly served in Desert Storm and the Kosovo Conflict. TSgt. Vereen also was an active member of the Summerville Masonic Lodge, #234.
Surviving are his son Derek T. Vereen of Newberry; Two brothers, Joe Vereen and Benjamin Vereen, both of Greenwood; Fiance Tammy M. Reum of Columbia; and his son's mother and close friend, Lee A. Egleston of Newberry.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004 at the Palmetto Chapel on Shaw Air Force Base.
