WILLIAM A. LEVAN Jr.

William Albertus Levan Jr., 95, died Saturday, March 27, 2004, at his residence, 420 Council St.

Born in Sumter County, Sept. 26, 1908, he was the husband of Vermell Brown Levan. At an early age, he attended Trinity Baptist Church and later joined Berea Seventh Day Adventist Church and accepted Christ as his personal savior. He was affiliated with the Dorcas Society, Adventist Men, a deacon of the church and lead member of the Sunset Jubilee Singers for many years. He was employed with the Boozer and Walton Co. for many years until his retirement.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Vermell Brown Levan; five daughters, Doris (Willie) Geter of Mayesville, Dorothy Brown, Betty A. (William) Jones, Collette (Joe) Mack, all of Sumter, and Victoria Linda (Maurice) Woods of Washington, D.C.; one son, Albert Brown of New Bern, N.C.; one daughter-in-law, Linda M. Brown of Rembert; three brothers-in-law, Louis Brown and Therlese Brown of Sumter and Arthur Lee Brown of Columbia; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by three children, Anthony Brown, Angela Brown and Larry Brown; and two grandchildren, Melissa Anthony and Joe Nathan Mack Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Berea Seventh Day Adventist Church, 675 S. Lafayette Drive, with Pastor Eugene Mason officiating, assisted by Elder Willie Dupree. Burial will follow in the Walker cemetery.

Pallbearers will be the deacons of the church and flower bearers will be the deaconesses of the church.

The family will receive friends at the home, 420 Council St.

Scriven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

EUGENE B. McLEOD Sr.

PINEWOOD -- Eugene Belton "Gene" McLeod Sr., 84, husband of Nancy Evans McLeod, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at his home.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Jacob Lawson McLeod and Elizabeth Beard McLeod. Mr. McLeod was twice married , first to the late Sadie Fair Aycock McLeod then to Nancy Evans McLeod. Mr. McLeod was a member of Pinewood United Methodist Church, where he served as a member of the church council for many years in various positions. Mr. McLeod was educated in Manning public schools and was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theater of Operations, earning the rank of major.

After the war, he settled in the Pinewood area, where he farmed and owned and operated a dairy and cotton gin. He was a founder of Sumter Dairies, Excello Mills and Ag-Rotor. He was also a founder and major stockholder in Young's Food Stores.

One of his greatest loves and lifelong endeavor was serving as a member of the Natural Resources Conservation Service Commission for 50 years where he led the restoration project for Pocotaligo Swamp.

Honors include the South Carolina Outstanding Conservation District Commissioner Award and the Order of the Palmetto, the highest award given by the governor of South Carolina.

Surviving are his wife of Pinewood; his children by his first marriage, Cecilia Fair Edmunds and husband, Richard Champion Edmunds, of Wedgefield, Helen M. Lee and husband, Wedrell Wayne Lee Sr., Eugene Belton "Mac" McLeod Jr. and wife, Joan Simms McLeod, Robert Kenny McLeod and wife, Cindy Lee McLeod, Walter Pinckney McLeod and wife, Tammy Fenters McLeod, all of Pinewood; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Carol Bond and husband, Mike Bond, Kay Nobles and husband, Phil Nobles, all of Sumter, Kenneth Evans and wife, Yvonne Evans, of Lynchburg and Janice Hawkins and husband, Bob Hawkins, of Chesapeake, Va.; 11 step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Pinewood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Broomall officiating.

Burial will follow in the Pinewood cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Wedrell Wayne Lee Jr., Walter Pinckney McLeod Jr., Thomas Frederick Edmunds, Eugene Belton "Trey" McLeod III, Sean Michael McLeod, Christopher Quinn McLeod, Robert Kenny McLeod Jr. and Richard Champion Edmunds Jr.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 5565 Panola Road, Pinewood.

Memorials may be made to the Pinewood United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 218, Pinewood, SC 29125.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

DOROTHY P. NEWELL

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Dot Platt Newell, wife of Richard G. Newell, died Monday, March 29, 2004, in Greensboro.

Born Dorothy Virginia Platt in Sumter on July 30, 1920, she was the only daughter of Marion Mims Platt and Lucie Gasque Platt.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at Forest Lawn cemetery in Greensboro.

She attended school in Columbia and Sumter. She graduated from the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. She did graduate work in journalism at Columbia University in New York City. She worked for the Red Cross in World War II and later taught school in Sumter. Mrs. Newell was active in various charitable organizations and was a volunteer swimming and water aerobics instructor for the physically impaired.

She was married to Dick Newell of Centerville, Md., on March 20, 1948. The Newells traveled widely and lived in a number of places during his career with the United States Air Force. For the past 30 years, since Col. Newell's retirement from the Air Force, they made their home in Greensboro.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Virginia "Ginny" Evan Newell; and cousins, Frances Benton Lott of Columbia and Sumter, Virginia Gasque McDowell and Sara Gasque Bacot of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by three children, Richard Gordon Newell Jr., Lucie Marion Newell and John Platt Newell; and by her brother, John Platt.

The family will receive friends at home after the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dorothy P. Newell Memorial Fund, c/o Wachovia Bank, for various causes close to Dorothy's heart.

The family is being served by Forbis and Dick Funeral Service, North Elm Chapel, Greensboro.

PAULINE C. MILLER

Pauline Conrad Miller, age 97, wife of the late Raymond Lewis Miller, died on Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Mariner Healthcare East.

She was born in Springfield, Mo., a daughter of the late Della Perry and Edward Nicholas Conrad. She had a great sense of humor and loved being at home and with her family. She was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are one son, Conrad Nix Miller and his wife, Judith, of Sumter; and one step-granddaughter, Tammy Martin.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be held at a later date in Tulsa, Okla.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 5 to 6 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301, or to The American Heart Association, 400 Percival Road, P.O. Box 6604, Columbia, SC 29260-6604.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

GEORGE BRUNSON

SUMMERTON -- George "Ervin" Brunson, 51, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at his residence.

Born Oct. 3, 1952, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Rosena Brunson Jones.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Betty (Anthony) Brunson Webb, 1095 Session St., Summerton.

Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service.

LONNIE FLOOD

SUMMERTON -- Lonnie Flood, 74, husband of Shirley Martin Flood, died March 30, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Sept. 8, 1929, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Henry "Sonny" Flood and Flory Belser Flood. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined Liberty Hill AME Church. After moving to New York City, he joined Universal Hagar's Spiritual Church. He was a retired auto mechanic.

Survivors besides his wife of the home, Shirley M. Flood, include one son, Martin Flood of Laurel, Md.; two daughters, Lorraine Dow of Bronx, N.Y., and Evangelist Patricia (the Rev. Dr. William) Best of Middleton, N.Y.; other children include Tanya Jay, Jamal Jay, Tamika Jay, Jermain Jay and Eric Jay, all of Bronx, N.Y.; one sister, Rosa Davis-Biden of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 11 siblings.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning. The Rev. Dr. William Best will officiate, assisted by Dr. Eugene Canty and the Rev. Melvin Capers.

Burial will be in Liberty Hill AME Church cemetery in Summerton.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Floral bearers will be friends of the family.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 53 Church St., Harvin Manor, Apt. 2-B, Summerton.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ARTHUR TIPS

Arthur "Gerad" Tips, 20, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004.

He was born in Sumter County on April 4, 1983.

The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, Catherine Tips, 349 Seminole Road.

Funeral services will be announced by Scriven Funeral Home of Sumter.

GEORGE BRUNSON

SUMMERTON -- George "Ervin" Brunson, 51, of 18 Wassau St., died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at his residence.

Born Oct. 3, 1952, in Clarendon County, he was a stepson of Morris Jones and the late Rosena Brunson Jones. He attended Scott's Branch High School. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant UME Church. In later years, he moved to White Plains, N.Y. He was employed by Mayflower Moving Transportation Co. After retirement, he returned back to Summerton, where he reunited with his home church, Mt. Pleasant UME Church. He was a member of the community hunting club, where he was an advocate of sports.

Survivors include two brothers, Eddie Lee Brunson and Abraham Brunson, both of White Plains, N.Y.; five sisters, Daisy (Henry) White of New York, N.Y., Betty (Anthony) Brunson Webb and Barbara Brunson, both of Summerton, Mary Jane (Joseph) Gunter of Browns Mill, N.J., and Elanora Adams of Summerton; and one niece, Berbenia Brunson of Summerton.

The remains will be placed in the church at noon Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant UME Church, Panola community, Pinewood, with the Rev. James Robinson, assisted by the Rev. Johnnie Lee Lawson and the Rev. Johnathan Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Community Hunting Club.

The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home of his sisters, Betty (Abraham) Brunson Webb and Barbara Brunson, 1095 Session St., Summerton.

The family will receive friends at 1095 Session St., Summerton.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

FRANK R. PODESZWA

Frank Robert Podeszwa, 66, of Sumter, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at his residence.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, Oakbrook Chapel, 11000 Dorchester Road, Summerville. Burial will follow in Dorchester Memory Gardens, 11000 Dorchester Road, Summerville.

Friends may call at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, 303 S. Main St., Summerville, from 6 until 8 p.m. today.

Mr. Podeszwa was born Jan. 29, 1938, in Spring Valley, Ill., son of the late Frank Joseph Podeszwa and Ann Elizabeth Boloski Podeszwa. He attended schools in Rockford, Ill. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Berwyn, Ill. He was a retired first class boatswain mate with the United States Navy, serving in the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are one son, Robert "Bobby" E. Podeszwa and his wife, Michelle, of Charlotte, N.C.; one granddaughter, Katelyn Elizabeth Marcelle Podeszwa of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Jeri Clark of Schaumburg, Ill.; two brothers, Jim Podeszwa of Rockford, Ill., and Leonard Podeszwa of Brooksville, Fla.; ex-wife, Carol J. Sweatman of Summerville.

Fond uncle of many and he was predeceased by his sister, Betty Herbig.

Arrangements by James A. Dyal Funeral Home, 303 S. Main St., Summerville.
