Evelyn F. Woolsey, 90, formerly of Newberry, widow of Curtis A. Woolsey, died Sunday, August 6, 2006 at the Lexington Medical Center Extended Care.
Mrs. Woolsey was born on Oct. 4, 1915 in Hillham, IN, a daughter of the late Everett Bledsoe and Rachael Bauernfeind. She and her husband were the owners and managers of Curtis Bakery in Newberry and she was a member of O’Neal St. United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Woolsey is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Gayle Woolsey of Lexington; five grandsons; 7 great grandchildren and two sisters Ruby Radcliff and Mildred Fields both of French Lick, IN.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 AM Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Kem Thomas. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
Her grandsons did serve as active pallbearers.

Betty Dickert Stribble

Betty Dickert Stribble, 72, of 36 Player Street, Newberry, widow of Johnnie J. Stribble, died Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at her residence.
She was born on September 9, 1933 in Whitmire, a daughter of the late Curtis Leon and Carrie Campbell Dickert. She was retired from Betty’s Nursery. She was a member of Glenn Street Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Debra S. Willingham of Newberry; and Jodie S. Hazel of Reston, VA; a son, Johnny Dickert Stribble of Dudley, NC; a sister, Annette McCaskill of Whitmire; six grandchildren, Christy Willingham West, Robert Earl Willingham, III, Tara Lynn Hazel, Clatie Stribble, Ashton Stribble, Channing Christen Stribble; and a great grandson, Andrew Christopher West. She was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Dickert Smith.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 A. M. Saturday at Glenn Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Todd Kirkland. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family did receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P. M. Friday at the funeral home. The family was at her residence, 36 Player Street.
Active pallbearers were Eric Miller, Phil Bouknight, Ricky Attaway, Wayne Nichols and Randy Moore.

Alice Roton Millstead

Alice Roton Millstead, 76, of 1930 Tanyard St., Newberry, widow of C.T. “Tuffy” Millstead, died Saturday, September 30, 2006 at her residence.
Mrs. Millstead was born on January 14, 1930 in Newberry, a daughter of the late Bennie R. and Sudie Fulmer Roton. She was a retired employee of Allied Chemical and was a member of Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church and the Newberry County Shrinettes.
She is survived by her son, Larry A. Millstead of Newbery; two sisters, Ethel R. Coleman of Newberry and Polly R. Sanders of Baker,FL; and three grandchildren Larry A. Millstead, Jr.,his fiance, Treva Smith and Daren C. Millstead all of Aiken and Leann M. Millstead of Newberry. She was predeceased by two sisters, Minnie Werts and Mary Wicker and four brothers, Buddy Roton, Pete Roton, Raymond Roton, and Bit Roton.
Funeral services were conducted 3:00 P.M. Tuesday at Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church by the Rev. Robert Kasting. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:30 PM Monday at the funeral home. The family was at her residence, 1930 Tanyard St.
Active pallbearers were Daren C. Millstead, Larry A. Millstead, Jr., Steve Massingale, Sam Baird, Ronney Hunter, Robbie Cudd, Mike Ware, and Danny Clark. Honorary pallbearers were Arlo Hill, Donnie Roton, Buddy Summer, Lloyd Layman, J.C. McLeod, and the members of the Newberry High School football team.

Elizabeth “Betty” Martin Connelly

Elizabeth “Betty” Martin Connelly, 79, formerly of 844 Belmont Church Road, Silverstreet, died Saturday, September 23, 2006, at Self Memorial Medical Center in Greenwood.
Mrs. Connelly was born on May 8, 1927 in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Frank W. and Ida Longshore Martin. She was twice married, first to the late Griffin O. “Griff” Dorroh, Sr. and second to the late James S. “Jim” Connelly. She was a retired sales clerk, having worked for Jim’s Jewelers and Turners Jewelers. She was a member of Smyrna Presbyterian Church, the Adult Sunday School Class, the Ester Circle and was a Lunch Pal at Prosperity-Rikard Elementary School.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara D. & Tim Burke of Mt. Pleasant; two sons and daughters-in-law, G. Olin and Kathy Dorroh, Jr. of Greenwood and David M. and Annie Laurie Dorroh of Newberry; two sisters, Patricia M. Cammeron of Saluda and Ruth M. Ausband of Myrtle Beach; four grandchildren, Maggie Dorroh, Marty Dorroh, Griff Dorroh and Dena Byrd: and a great grandson, Noah Dorroh. She was predeceased by two sisters, Emily M. Corley and Etta M. Benson and four brothers, Francis Martin, Marion Martin, Sherod Martin and James Martin.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 Monday at Smyrna Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Scott Hill and Rev. Doug Martin. Interment did follow in church cemetery.
Visitation was from 4:30 to 6:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. The family was at her residence, 844 Belmont Church, Rd., Silverstreet.

James L. Tarver

James L. Tarver, 75, of 962 Lindsay Circle, Newberry, died Friday, September 15, 2006 at his residence.
Mr. Tarver was born in Dothan, AL, a son of the late Alford D. and Lucille Chancey Tarver. He was a retired employee of Owens-Illinois Co. and was a member of Faith Assembly of God. He was an ordained minister with the Assembly of God Church for 45 years.
Mr. Tarver is survived by his wife, Bessie Crumpton Tarver; two sons and daughters-in-law, Toby and Helen Tarver of Joanna and Al and Amber Tarver of Newberry; a brother, Johnny Tarver of Dothan, Al; six grandchildren, Allen, Andy, Travis, Jesse, Matthew, and Joshua Tarver; special niece, Cathy Clinton; special nephew, Rudie Tarver; and a special great great nephew, Hunter Clinton. He was predeceased by two brothers, George Ray Tarver and Huey A. “Pee Wee” Tarver.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday at the Faith Assembly of God by the Rev. Mitchel Burris, Rev. O. W. Walters, and Rev. Charlie Clinton. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 7:30 PM Saturday at the funeral home and the family was at the residence 962 Lindsay Circle, Newberry.

Ernestine “Dean” Cooke Collins, 85, formerly of North Charleston, widow of Lacy W. Collins, died Friday, September 01, 2006 at the J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
She was born on September 28, 1920 in Marion, SC a daughter of the late Ernest Covington and Ethel Goodwin Cooke. She was a homemaker, a member of the First Baptist Church in Newberry and a longtime member of Northside Baptist Church in North Charleston where she served as an AWANA leader and teacher..
Mrs. Collins is survived by her son and daughter-in-law. L. Harris and Sandra Collins of Newberry; two sisters, Carolyn (Mrs. Harmon) Atkinson and Ruth (Mrs. Herman) Inman both of Marion; a brother, L. Earl Cooke of Conway, SC; seven grandchildren, Andrea C. (Jay) Hawkins, Jaime C. (Mike) Teraoka, Bryan H. Collins, Larry (Lydia) Dever, Barry (Lisa) Dever, Allen Dever, and Timothy Dever; and nine great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Bonnie Jean Dever.
Funeral services were conducted at 4:00 PM Wednesday, September 06, 2006 at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry, SC by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon. Interment services was conducted by Rev. Dr. John Stevens at 2:00 PM Thursday, September 07, 2006 in Carolina Memorial Gardens, 7113 Rivers Ave. North Charleston.

Nettie C. Counts

Nettie C. Counts, 84, of 1613 Nance St., Newberry, died Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Counts was born on June 9, 1922 in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Claude L. and Bessie Enlow Counts. She was a retire employee of J.P. Stevens Co. and a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, Little Mountain.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lanel C. and Wayne Crawford of Newbery. She was predeceased by six brothers, Edgar Counts, Luther Counts, Wilbur Counts, Cecil Counts, Linwood Counts, and Thomas Counts and four sistrers Lola Farr, Francis Counts, Freddie Counts, and Lillian Counts.
Funeral services was conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday at O’Neal St. United Methodist Church by the Rev. Kem Thomas and the Rev Glenn Mosteller. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens
Visitation was from 5:00 to 6:30 PM Friday at the funeral home. The family was at residence of Nadine Amick, 1815 Glenn St. Ext.

Doris Newell Stewart

Doris Newell Stewart, 86, of 2020 Harrington St., Newbery, widow of M. Bradford Stewart, died Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Stewart was born in Bolton, NC, a daughter of the late Rufus and Daisy Dowless Newell. She was a member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church, a former member of Lillington Presbyterian Church, a member of the Creative Arts Club and the Fine Arts Club.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ilene S. and Frank Partridge of Newberry; a son, Ray B. Stewart of Clermont Harbor, MS; two grandchildren Allison Partridge (Griffin) Beckham of Greenwood and Troup Partridge of Newberry; and a granddaughter-in-law, Meredith Nock Partridge and a great granddaughter, Nancy Stewart Partridge both of Sumter.
Funeral services were conducted at 12 Noon Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Mitch Van Metre. Interment was at 12 Noon Saturday in the Flat Branch Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Bunnlevel, NC.
Visitation was from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home and the family was at the residence her daughter, 2029 Harrington St. Newberry.
