WALHALLA -- Clarence J. "C.J." Sanders, 71, of 191 Earlestead Drive died Monday April 7, 2003, at the Hospice House of Anderson.
Born in Starkweather, N.D., he was the son of the late Clarence M. and Minnie A. Hunt Sanders. He was a retired motel proprietor and was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church. He was an U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He was also a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Surviving are widow, Suzanne Chatham Sanders; son, Robert E. Alexander of Tamassee; and two granddaughters.
Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Presbyterian Church; burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Davenport Funeral Home.
Family members will be the home of a son, Robert, 351,Cherokee Lake Road, Tamassee.

Chester King
DUE WEST -- Chester Allen King, 85, resident of Carlisle Nursing Center, formerly of #9 Washington St. died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at Carlisle Nursing Center in Due West.
Born in Due West, he graduated from Erskine College with a major in English and a minor in violin. He was a life long of Due West ARP Church, where he served as a deacon. He operated a dairy farm before serving with the County Tax Equalization Office. He became an English teacher and retired from Abbeville School District, where he was the Attendance supervisor.
Surviving are widow, Margaret McNeill King of Due West; son, Chester Robertson King of Due West; and three granddaughters.
He was the son of the late Alonzo and Hattie Robertson King.
Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Due West ARP Church cemetery with the Rev. Calvin Draffin officiating. The body is at The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home in Abbeville. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Social Hall of the church.
The family will be at the home of his son, Chester R. King in Due West.

Dale Erb
Nov. 2, 1938 -- April 6, 2003
ANDERSON -- Dale William Erb Sr., 64, of 103 Pecan Drive died Sunday, April 6, 2003 at his residence.
Born in New York State, he was retired from Anderson College Maintenance Shop with 25 years of service.
Surviving are sons, Donnie Erb and Dennis Erb, both of Anderson; daughter, Bonnie Davis of Anderson; three brothers; one sister; and six grandchildren.
He was the widower of Mabel Johnson Erb and the son of the late Arthur Erb and Martha Erb.
No formal services are planned.
The family members will be at their respective homes.

EDISTO BEACH -- David F. Bolding, 55, of 1514 Dorothy St. died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at his home.
Born in Greenville, he was educated at LaGrange College and was a textile manager. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Norwood.
Surviving are widow, Roz S. Bolding; daughter, Brandy B. Morton; mother, Emily Gibson Bolding of Seneca; and two grandsons.
Services were held Saturday, April 5 at the First United Methodist of Norwood.
The family suggests memorials be made to First United Methodist Church of Norwood, Edisto Island Methodist Church of the Southeastern Kidney Council.

Edman Newell
Edman Liddell Newell, 89, of 791 Johnson Creek Road died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at his home.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a member of Springfield Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Springfield Baptist Church Trustee Board, where he was the former chairman. He retired from the South Carolina Highway Department in Abbeville.
Surviving are widow, Lillie Mae Miller Newell of the home; daughters, Willie O. Miller of Abbeville, Dolly Mae Richardson and Lillie Ruth McGee, both of Anderson and Lugenia Lomax of Level Land; sons, Marion Newell, Thomas Miller, Larry Newell and Charles Newell, all of Level Land; sister, Blanche Sims of South Carolina; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was the son of the late Will and Mary Cowan Newell.
Services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Springfield Baptist Church by the Revs. Jarvis Brown, N.P. Pearson, Waymon Coleman III, Eddie Lee Thompson, Casey Childs and Marvis Cunningham; burial in the church cemetery. No wake is planned. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Elizabeth Mitchell
DUE WEST -- Elizabeth Hay Mitchell, of Wadmalaw Island died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Carlisle Nursing Center in Due West.
She graduated from Rock Hill High School and attended Winthrop College. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Charleston, where she was also a Sunday school teacher. She started the weekday kindergarten program at Second Presbyterian Church and later formed the same at Johns Island, SC Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are sons, Lewis Mitchell of Wilmington, Del. and Marion Mitchell of Chesterfield, Mo.; daughters, Edith Brawley of Due West and Elizabeth Neil of Decatur, Ga.; sister, Inez James of Greer; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was the widow of F. Marion Mitchell Jr. and the daughter of the late Lewis H. and Edith Beckett Hay.
Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Edisto Presbyterian Church, on Edisto Island, by the Rev. Lewis S. Hay; burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body is at The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home, Abbeville.

Evelyn Wilkes
DETROIT, Mich. -- Evelyn Wilkes, 72, of 13240 Santa Rose, formerly of Belton died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at a local hospital in Detroit.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Holloway's Funeral Home, Belton. The remains will be returned to Belton for burial.

CARNESVILLE, Ga. -- Gwen Murphy, of Carnesville died Sunday, March 30, 2003.A
A native of Franklin County, her most recent career focus was that of a longtime principal's secretary in the Clarke County School District at Cedar Shoals High School in Athens. She served in the position from 1982 to 2002. She was a member of Broad River Baptist Church in Eastanollee since 1978.
Surviving are widower, Jerry Murphy of the home; daughter, Kari Martin of Augusta; sisters, Helen Blackmon of Carnesville and Jean Roberts of Toccoa; brother, Melvin Carson of Ocala, Fla.; and one granddaughter.
She was the daughter of the late Hall J. and Wilma Chatham Carson. She was preceded in death by her sister, Debbie Carson Poole; and a grandson, Philip Daniel Martin.
Memorial services are at noon Saturday at Broad River Baptist Church by the Revs. Shanon Hayes and Jason DeFoor. An informal celebration will follow at the home in Carnesville from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. All friends and family are invited to join together in a further commemoration of her life.

BELTON -- James Calvin Broadwell, 90, of 1036 Cox Lake Road died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Anderson, he was a retired grocer and a member of Whitefield Baptist Church.
Surviving are brother, William Broadwell of Belton; and a sister, Irene B. Dunlap of Belton.
He was the son of the late Grady Broadwell and Bessie James Broadwell. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Melvin and Leroy Broadwell.
Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, Anderson; burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Born in Hart County, Ga., he was a retired barber and was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are son, Joe Dennis Slater of Anderson; daughters, Margie Foster and Carol Hayes, both of Anderson; half-brother, Edgar Slater of Hartwell, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was the widower of Mary Nell Chastain Slater and the son of the late William Hosea Slater and Mozelle McCurley Slater. He was preceded in death by two sons, William Raymond Slater and Ray Kendall Slater; five brothers; one sister; one great-grandson; and one great-great-grandson.
Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home by the Rev. James Patterson; burial in New Silverbrook Cemetery, Anderson. The family received friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

WALHALLA -- Margaret Vaughn Chapman, 65, of 645 Pickett Post Road died Monday, April 7, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital.
Born in Oconee County, she was the daughter of the late Grady and Lila Queen Vaughn. She was a homemaker and was a member of the North Walhalla Church of God and the Ladies Senior Class of the church.
Surviving are widower, Henry Chapman of the home; sons, Van Chapman of Mountain Rest, and Cletus Chapman of Walhalla; daughters, Deirdre Harvey and Sheree Moses, both of Walhalla; brother, Hugh Vaughn of Walhalla; sisters, Helen Smith of Walhalla, and Bobbie Russell of Greenville; seven grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Gilbert Vaughn.
Services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Davenport Funeral Home; burial will be in Oconee Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
