FOUNTAIN INN — Douglas McLaurin Hartvig of Fountain Inn, 79, husband of Doris Hall Hartvig, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000. Born in Alameda, Calif., he was a son of the late John A. Hartvig and Mary Wasson Hartvig. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island. Mr. Hartvig was a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran. He retired as a mechanic from Exxon in Charleston. He was also a volunteer fireman and emergency medical technician with Edisto Island. Survivors include his wife of Fountain Inn; and a daughter, Bonnie E. Finucan of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Cannon Funeral Home, 207 S. MANNING — George Hampton Lackey, 86, husband of Eunice Geddings Lackey, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born July 17, 1913, in Paxville, he was a son of the late George Hampton Lackey and Elizabeth Ridgill Lackey. Mr. Lackey was a member of First Baptist Church and a member of the Crusaders Sunday School Class, of which he was a teacher for over 30 years. He was a retired heating and air-conditioning specialist. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Martin’s Lake Fishing Club. Survivors besides his wife of 65 years of Manning include a son, Daniel Glenn Lackey of Manning; three daughters, Elizabeth “Libby” Merritt and Mary “Melissa” Harrington, both of Manning, and Loretta “Jo” Ardis of Sumter; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dr. George H. Lackey Jr.; and a grandson, Angel Thames. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Manning First Baptist Church with Dr. David Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. Ruby Felder died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Hopewell Healthcare Center. Born Dec. 29, 1942, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Sadie Buckman Felder. She attended Sumter County public schools and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. After moving to Brooklyn, N.Y., she joined Zion Shiloh Baptist Church. She was a former employee at Kings County Hospital. After moving back to Sumter, she rejoined Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, John Felder of Sumter; an adopted daughter, Deloris Haywood; six stepchildren, Rose, Joyce, Junior, Larry, Roland and Edward Jackson; a brother, Clyde Felder of Brooklyn; three sisters, Bertha James Grinnell and Eva Way, both of Sumter, and Lucille Tindall of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a grandchild; and four adopted grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Felder Jr.; and two sisters, Lillie Mae Felder and Mable Kennedy. Martha James Ford, widow of Leo Ford, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at her home. Born Nov. 26, 1916, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Benjamin James and Rebecca Sharpe James. Mrs. Ford attended the public schools of Sumter County. She began her Christian journey at the St. Paul AME Church and later worshiped at Beulah AME Church. The remainder of her life was spent as an active member of St. John Pentecostal Holiness Church. For more than 50 years she served as a deaconess and missionary, and a member of the usher board, gospel choir and the Willing Workers Club. Survivors include two sons, Benjamin Ford of Brooklyn, N.Y., and James Ford of Columbia; three daughters, Leola F. Sumpter of Sumter, and Loutricia Susan Ford and Martha F. Hodge, both of Brooklyn; a brother, Robert James of Washington, D.C.; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Johnie Ford; two brothers, Phelp James and Stephan James; and two sisters, Maggie Dobson and Lubirdie James. Born Sept. 1, 1914, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary Hammond Epperson. Mr. Epperson was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Summerton. He was a retired market manager and a member of the Knights of Columbus. ALCOLU — John Evans “Billy” Felder, 67, husband of Laura Blackwell Felder, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born July 11, 1932, in the Camp Bob Cooper community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Evans Felder and Nora Levy Felder Polite and the stepson of the late James Polite. Mr. Felder attended Reeseville Parochial School in the Alcolu community and completed his education at Manning Training School. In his youth he joined Reeseville AME Church, where he served faithfully as a member of the trustee board. He was an employee of Brogdon Farm and T.S. Lee and sons. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. Survivors besides his wife of the home include six sons, John Felder of Gaffney, Eugene Felder of Foreston, Gregory Felder of Newport News, Va., Anthony Felder of Florence, James Felder of Lynchburg and Lawrence Sheriod of Summerton; two daughters, Gloria Alice Young of Foreston and Artell Felder of Greenville; 18 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Sandra Walters Frier, 40, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at her home in Columbia. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of Dr. William Cecil and Virginia Laney Walters. Mrs. Frier was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church. She received a bachelor’s degree from the Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C., and a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. She also received rehabilitation certification by the state. She received a number of awards for her work with the disabled, and was active in a number of organizations for the disabled including the Governor’s Task Force. In 1980 she represented South Carolina in the Miss Universe Wheelchair Pageant in Ohio. Survivors besides her parents of Sumter include three sisters, Debbie Walters Craven and her husband, Lonnie Craven, of Columbia, Virginia “Gingi” Walters Cook and her husband, Van Cook, of Chapin, and Patricia “Patti” Walters of Columbia; three nephews, Christopher Craven, Christopher Cook and Cory Cook; and two nieces, Christina Craven and Laney Cook.
