Born April 10, 1930, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Taylor and Sadie Gamble Taylor. Mrs. Sanders attended Lee County Schools and had worked for Dupont ARA Cafeteria. Survivors in addition to her husband of Rembert include three sons, James Edd Sanders of Fayetteville, N.C., John Earl Sanders of Sumter and Willie Sanders of Pocconos, Pa.; a stepson, James Jenkins; eight daughters, Eartha McCready of Hillside, N.J., Sadie Jenkins, Ruth Bennett, Emma English, Corine Sanders and Mary Howell, all of Rembert, Elizabeth Spencer of Sumter and Louise Pittman of Plymouth, N.C.; a brother, Robert Taylor; a sister, Mary Oliver of Washington, D.C.; 31 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Services will be 4:30 p.m. today at Grant Hill Baptist Church on Black River Road in Dalzell, with the Rev. Willie Dennis officiating. Ministers Lula Bennett and Minnie Dennis and the Rev. Mary Edna Pridmore “Prid” Andrews, 83, widow of John H. Andrews Sr., died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at a Lexington nursing facility. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late George Levi Pridmore and the late Emma Johnson Pridmore. Mrs. Andrews was a member of Westside Baptist Church. She was a retired registered nurse, who had worked for Dr. Perry Davis in Pinewood and several area nursing homes. Survivors include two sons, John H. Andrews Jr. and his wife, Linda Andrews, of West Columbia and William Michael “Mickey” Andrews and his wife, Gail Andrews, of Sumter; two brothers, Rudolph Pridmore and George Pridmore, both of Greenville; three grandchildren, Holly Rising and Heather Andrews, both of West Columbia, and Terry Smith of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Elliott was a retired cotton ginner, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of Pisgah Pentecostal Holiness Church in Pinewood. Sarah B. Canty, wife of Deacon David Canty, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 10, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Clara B. Robinson and Hannibal Brown. Mrs. Canty was baptized at Enon Baptist Church and was a member of Church of God by Faith for more than 40 years. Survivors in addition to her husband of Sumter include a son, Amos Canty of Sumter; four brothers, Albert Brown of Bronx, N.Y., Ernest Brown of Mount Vernon, N.Y., George Brown of Columbia and Curtis Robinson of Savannah, Ga; a sister, Lucille B. SUMMERTON — Marian Burgess Barksdale, 92, widow of B. Clyde Barksdale, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at a North Carolina nursing home. Born Feb. 6, 1908, in Fort Motte, she was a daughter of the late A. Plummer Burgess and Marian Mood Burgess. Mrs. Barksdale was a graduate of Summerton High School and Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, N.C. She completed her graduate studies at George Peabody School. She worked with several church choirs and youth groups across the Carolinas and retired as choir director of Summerton Presbyterian Church in 1998. She was a U.S. Navy veteran, lieutenant WAVES World War II. Survivors include two sisters, Margaret Buie and Anne B. Neely of Asheboro, N.C; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Summerton Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Jay Hammett will officiate. HOPKINS — Robert “Bobby” Lee Colvin, 81, husband of Jewel Elizabeth Motley Colvin, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late Edward Elton Colvin and the late Minnie Arledge Colvin. Mr. Colvin was a retired city of Sumter employee and was a newspaper carrier for The Item for more than 25 years. He was a member of Lower Richland Masonic Lodge No. 406. REMBERT — Elizabeth B. Mayrant, 75, wife of James E. Mayrant, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at her home. Born April 12, 1925, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Cleveland Miller and Helen Young Miller. Mrs. Mayrant was a member of Rafting Creek Baptist Church, where she was baptized. She later joined Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, where she was a member of the gospel choir, Senior Missionary Society, senior Sunday school class and Trustee Wives Organization. She also belonged to Rembert Farmers Union Lodge. Survivors in addition to her husband include three sons, James Mayrant Jr. of Inglewood, Calif., Harrison Mayrant of Rembert and Nemiah Mayrant of Bowie, Md.; eight daughters, Eva Ellis and Evangelist Bessie Workman of Capitol Heights, Md., Ruby Smith of Laurel, Md., Delvlyn Lawson of Rembert, Essie Jackson of Greenbelt, Md., Ella Jackson of Camden, Janie Croom of Rembert and Mary Mayrant of Dalzell; a brother, John Miller of Dalzell; six sisters, Mary Ellen Moody, Minnie Mayrant, Queen Dennis, Emma Clea, Theresa Dennis and Georgia Floyd, all of Rembert; 24 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. James M. “Jimmy” Kolb III, 61, husband of Emily Curtis Kolb, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter, he was a son of Margaret Thorne Kolb and the late James M. Kolb Jr. Mr. Kolb was a lifelong Baptist. He was a graduate of Presbyterian College and the co-captain of the school’s football team. He retired from Sumter School District 2 as an assistant superintendent. He was a former coach for Hillcrest High School’s track team and an assistant coach for the football team. He was a former principal at Cherryvale Elementary and Furman High schools. He was a member of Sumter Shag Club. Survivors in addition to his wife of the home and his mother of Sumter include two daughters, Deborah K. Privette of Sumter and Jennifer K. Coker of Wedgefield; two sisters, Corrine K. Poston and Linda K. Newman of Sumter; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara K. Lemacks. Born in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Robert Brown and Addie McDonald Brown. Mrs. Clark was first married to the late William Harold Jamison. She graduated from Lincoln High School and attended Morris College, Benedict College and Allen University. She was a member of Church of God by Faith for more than 70 years, where she served as a member of the senior choir, Willing Workers Club and missionary board. She also was a Sunday school superintendent, burial league administrator, church secretary and a church and district mother. Survivors include a son, Jimmie L. Brown of High Point, N.C.; three daughters, Addie Deloris Brown Collins and Claudie M. Brown Olurin, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Harriet Jamison Wilson of Sumter; three stepsons, Larry, William and Russell; four stepdaughters, Lettie, Mary Ruth, Martha Ann and Enola. Mrs. Kelly graduated from Marion College in Virginia and from Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. She was a retired registered nurse and a member of Saint James Lutheran Church in Sumter. She also was a member of Beuclare Chapter Order of the Eastern Star; the Iris Garden Club, the UDC American Legion and the Executive and Cosmopolitan clubs of Sumter. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Frederick H. Kelly and Ann C. Kelly of Lexington; a granddaughter, Megan A. Kelly of Lexington; a grandson, Mark F. Barry Douglas Leach, husband of Ceceilia J. Leach, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after a long illness. Born May 26, 1946, in Sumter, he was a son of Margaret Taylor Leach and Harry L. Leach. Mr. Leach was a 1964 graduate of Furman High School and a 1968 graduate of Clemson University. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1972, with tours of duty in the Philippines, at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base and Shaw Air Force Base. He retired from the teaching profession in 1996, after working 24 years at Millwood Elementary School. Mr. Leach was an active member of Alice Drive Baptist Church, where he served on various committees, taught Sunday school and served as a deacon and chairman of the new building team steering committee. He also was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He served as past elementary chairman of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He was an avid fisherman and was a former member of the Sumter Bassmasters and Fishers of Men National Tournament Trail. Survivors in addition to his wife of Sumter and his parents of Myrtle Beach include a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley L. Butler and Walter E. Butler of Myrtle Beach; sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Johnson Stowers of Columbia and Dolores J. Richard A. Brunson, husband of Juanita McKnight Brunson, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 28, 1937, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Richard A. and Robertha Reese Brunson. Mr. Brunson attended Sumter County public schools. He later relocated to New York, where he was employed by Fisher Body and A&R Floor Services. He later returned to Sumter after many years. HOPKINS — Mary “Vehh” Chatman, 81, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Ridgeview Manor. Born May 8, 1919, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Pollard and Rose Ann Chatman Pollard. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she attended Rafting Creek Baptist Church. She was a baby sitter for all the young children in her community. She was a very special and unique individual who had a heart of gold and the patience of Job, and to know her was to love her. Survivors include a brother, Daniel Chatman of Jamaica, N.Y.; and three sisters, Pertell McLeod Loynes of the home, Mazola C. White of Baltimore, Md., and Alice C. Watts of Ansonia, Conn. MANNING — Beaulah Thames Hilton, widow of Henry Hilton, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Born May 1, 1896, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Lee Thames and Martha Rhames Thames. In her youth, Mrs. Hilton became a member of Mt. Zero Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the missionary society, deaconess board and sang with the senior choir until illness limited her capacities. Over the years, she was a member and supporter of the Manning Branch NAACP. She was a midwife. Survivors include a son, the Rev. W.G. Hilton of Baltimore, Md.; three daughters, Luella McCray, Lizzie Prince and Dora Conyers, all of Manning; 51 grandchildren; 123 great-grandchildren; 55 great-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by eight children. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zero Baptist Church in Paxville with the Rev. CAMDEN — William J. “Bill” Lollis, husband of Ann Porter Lollis, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000. Born in Anderson, he was a son of the late Joseph Lee and Lyda Brooks Lollis. Mr. Lollis retired from the U.S. Air Force, having served in Thailand during the Vietnam War. He was a former co-owner of Skate Inn and Sports Connection. He was also owner of Concord Custom Clubs and an avid golfer. He was a member of Hermitage Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and a former deacon. TIMMONSVILLE — Arthur McClary died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at 103 Green Drive. Born March 15, 1933, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Hal McClary and Sarah Isaac. Mr. McClary attended Sumter County public schools. He was employed as a farmer for many years before retiring. Survivors include two brothers, James McClary of Sumter and Harold McClary of New York, N.Y.; and four sisters, Mary Jane Rouse of Timmonsville, Minnie Lou Isaac and Jannie Mae Carter, both of Sumter, and Lucille McClary Hickmon of New York, N.Y. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Green Bay Baptist Church in Lynchburg with the Rev. Eugene Myers officiating. Burial will be in Sanders Cemetery in Lynchburg. LYNCHBURG — Rufus “Brother” McElveen Jr. of Neptune, N.J., died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at the home of his nephew, Larry McFadden Jr., while visiting in Lynchburg. Born June 3, 1936, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Rufus McElveen Sr. and Rena Dupree McElveen. Mr. McElveen attended Lee County public schools. In his youth, he was a member of Warren Chapel United Methodist Church in Lynchburg. He was a truck driver in New Jersey for 25 years. Survivors include a son, Christopher Wilburn of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a brother, Frank McElveen of Philadelphia, Pa.; and six sisters, Minnie Anderson, Julia McElveen and Geraldine Abraham, all of Philadelphia, and Cassie Brown, Sylvia Jones and Minister Florence Miller, all of Baltimore, Md. He was preceded in death by a sister, Eula Mae McElveen McFadden. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Warren Chapel United Methodist Church in Lynchburg with the Rev. John A. Sellers, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hawkins Cemetery. FLORENCE — Frank Moses Jr., 73, husband of Mary Delores Harding Moses, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 2, 1927, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Frank Moses Sr. and O’Dell Scott Moses George. Mr. Moses attended Sumter County public schools. He began his Christian journey at Bethel AME Church, where he was a loyal and devoted member. He was a a member of the male chorus, Men of Bethel, steward board and custodian. He was a member of the University Masonic Brotherhood Inc., Scottish Rite Affiliation (1869) Sovereign Grand Master King Solomon Lodge, No. 8, and he was a faithful, hard worker and strong supporter of the Griertown community. Survivors besides his wife include six sons, Darryl Moses of the home, Neill Moses of Sumter, Macon Moses and Frank Moses, both of Atlanta, Ga., Carmen Fidel Moses of Philadelphia, Pa., and Michael Moses of Columbia; three daughters, Zelda Moses of the home, Sharon Moses of Tampa, Fla., and Cassandra Turner of Montgomery, Ala.; a brother, Earl Moses Sr. of Norristown, Pa.; a sister, Doreatha Thompson of Tampa, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m today in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel AME Church, Calhoun Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Robert E. Galloway, pastor, officiating, assisted by Presiding Elder Rev. Robert L. Mr. Poole retired from Sumter Millworks. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Wayne Poole of Sumter; two daughters, Carolyn Avins of Sumter and Margaret Ivey of Danville, Va.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
