LANCASTER - Mr. Curtis Junior "Curt" Gainer, 78, of 4948 J.B. Denton Road died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.
A native of Lancaster, Mr. Gainer was a son of the late John Lee Gainer and Amanda Bailey Gainer. He retired from J.P. Stevens and was a farmer. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Nida Bell Gainer; his brother, Elliott Gainer of Lancaster; and his sister, Eunice Snipes of Lancaster.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Hwy.

TEANECK, N.J. - Mrs. Sherlena A. Drakeford died Monday, April 9, 2001.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. today at the Community Baptist Church in Englewood, N.J., with the Rev. Lester Taylor Jr. officiating. Burial will be at the Brookside Cemetery in Englewood.
Mrs. Drakeford was a daughter of Dora E. Luciano and the late John Luciano.
Surviving in addition to her mother is her husband, Charles B. Drakeford; her sons, Charles B. Drakeford Jr. of Spartanburg and Kevin Drakeford of Las Vegas; two daughters, Valeria Florimon of Florida and Lisa Thomas of Englewood; nine grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

SPARTANBURG - Mrs. Charlotte Ann Powell Martin, 78, of Magnolia Manor in Inman died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
A native of Chester County, Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late William "Will" James and Elmira Kirkpatrick Powell. She was a retired licensed practical nurse at Rock Hill Convalescent Center.
Surviving are her son, Wallace L. Cole of South Hill, Mich.; two daughters, Phyllis A. Taylor of Irvington, N.J., and Dilsey C. King of Moore; her brother, Billy J. Powell of Sharon; two sisters, Inez Hames of Sharon and Frances E. Pratt of Nyack, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

Bobby Benfield
ROCK HILL - Mr. Bobby Gene Benfield, 67, of 1304 Deas St. died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at home.
A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at New Hope United Methodist Church in Chester, with the Rev. Thurman Johnson officiating.
A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Benfield was a son of the late Willie Benfield and Athalee Allen Benfield. He retired from Star Paper Tube, with 35 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Ann Couick Benfield; his son, Michael Benfield of Florence; two stepsons, Hazel E. Brown Jr. of Okinawa, Japan, and Jeffrey Brown of York; his stepdaughter, Annette Hubbard of Rock Hill; 12 grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

CLOVER - Mr. Edmond Harry Gordon, 79, of 810 Bellwood Drive died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at home.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Hutchison officiating. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery.
A native of York County, Mr. Gordon was a son of the late John Henderson Gordon and Emma Deal Gordon. He was a retired painting contractor. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of First United Methodist Church. He attended Clover High School and was one of Clover's first All-State football players.
Surviving are his wife, Nora Lee Hicks; three sons, Patrick Woodrow Gordon and Edmond Harry Gordon Jr., both of Clover, and Rand Kendrick Gordon of Charlotte; his sister, Betsy Gordon Adams of Clover; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

LANCASTER - Mr. Brandon Carson Griffin, 18, died Friday, April 13, 2001.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at The Camp Creek Baptist Church, with the Revs. Cecil Johnson and Doug Taylor officiating.
A native of Lancaster, Mr. Griffin was a son of Stanley Carson and Deborah Polston Griffin. He was a carpenter at The Kenny Polston Construction Co.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his brother, Kevin Griffin of Lancaster; and his maternal grandparents, Billy Polston and Jessie Polston, both of Lancaster.
The body will be taken to the home of Billy Polston and Jessie Polston, 1191 North Potter Road, this afternoon, where it will remain until one hour prior to service.

CHESTER - Mr. Audrey Liggins Sr. of 2926 Pilgrim Road, Wilksburg community, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

A native of Chester, Mr. Liggins was a son of the late Bertha Liggins Hughes. He was the widower of Florence Zanna Wade Liggins. He attended Chester County public schools and graduated from the Brainerd Institute in Chester. He was a member of Zion Pilgrim Church, the AP&B Society and the Acaica Lodge No. 32 of the Masonic Order.
Surviving are five sons, Robert of Greensboro, N.C., Audrey Jr., Obie and Charles, all of Chester, and Otis of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; seven daughters, Bertha and Ruth of Buffalo, N.Y., Margie of Philadelphia, Alvin, Barbara, Lillie and Mae, all of Chester, and Precillia of Greensboro; his sister, Lillian Worthy of Long Island, N.Y.; three stepsisters, Annie Mae Wilkes of Union and Channie Mae Hall and Corrine Pendergrass, both of Chester; 63 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

A native of Gastonia, Mrs. McCarley was a daughter of the late Essie Cashion. She was the widow of William Glenn McCarley. She was a member of Clover Presbyterian Church.

A native of Fort Mill, Mrs. Potts was a daughter of the late Austin Potts and Ella Stewart Potts. She was the widow of James Potts. She attended George Fish High School. She was a member of United AME Zion Church, where she was a member of the hymn choir.
Surviving are two sons, Robert J. Potts of Charlotte and Tim Potts of Fort Mill; three daughters, Eva Mae Potts, Barbara J. Potts and Betty J. Potts, all of Fort Mill; two brothers, Nesbit Potts and Otis Potts, both of Fort Mill; five sisters, Anna Dixon, Mattie Davis, Ella Dixon and Elizabeth Reid, all of Fort Mill, and Cleo Burgess of Detroit; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A native of Charlotte, Mrs. Hilton was a daughter of the late Everette Vance and Ollie Lee King Moore. She was retired from Parkdale Mills in Gastonia, N.C., and was a member of South Gastonia Church of God. She was the widow of the late Joseph Edward Hilton.
Surviving are three sons, Joseph Edward "Eddie" Hilton Jr. of Shelby, N.C., Robert "Bob" Paul Hilton of Graham, N.C., and Jack M. Hilton of Gastonia; her daughter, Myrtle Lee Hilton Boyd of Rock Hill; three sisters, Mary Elisabeth Toole of Stockbridge, Ga., Carrie Lee McCloy of New Port Richey, Fla., and Ruby Jackson Robinson of Reistertown, Md.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A native of Union Beach, N.J., Mrs. Ewald was a daughter of the late Leone Vincent and Dorothy Mae Johnson Dimech. She was employed at Ace Cash and was a member of Oakdale Church of God.
Surviving are her husband, William Blaine Ewald; her son, John Fenton of New Jersey; two daughters, Dorothy Fenton of North Carolina, and Patricia Fields of New Hampshire; three brothers, David Dimech, Jackson of New Jersey, Anthony Dimech of Maryland and Leone Dimech Jr. of Connecticut; two sisters, Joan Ditmars of Manalapan, N.J., and Flora Woodruff of Monroe Township, N.J.; and three grandchildren.

FORT MILL - Mr. Jack D. "Pappy" Neal Sr., 92, of 807 Springs Street died Friday, April 13, 2001, at home.

A native of Spartanburg, Mr. Neal was a son of the late Newton McCain and Nancy Clayton Neal. He was a veteran of the S.C. National Guard and of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was retired from Springs Industries and had worked a number of years for the town of Fort Mill. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 43 and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9138. He was also a life member of the Catawba Masonic Lodge No. 56. A member of First Baptist Church of Fort Mill, he was the widower of the late Grace McMahan Neal.
Surviving are three sons, Jack D. Neal Jr. of Greensboro, N.C., and John N. Neal and Thomas C. Neal, both of Fort Mill; two daughters, Betty Foss of Fort Mill and Nancy Welborn of Spartanburg; his sister, Drucie Vaughn of Greer; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
