Violet McNaughton

LANCASTER - Mrs. Violet Ghent McNaughton, 77, of Lancaster died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel, with the Rev. Kevin Cooley officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. McNaughton was a daughter of the late John Wesley Ghent Sr. and Nellie Sanders Ghent. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and was a homemaker. She was the widow of Ed McNaughton.

Surviving are three brothers, John W. Ghent Jr. and C. Glenn Ghent, both of Lancaster, and Fred R. Ghent of Satellite Beach, Fla., and two sisters, June G. Hudson and Doris Phillips, both of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Jack and Doris Phillips, 1114 Edgemont Drive.

Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 2217 Airport Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

William Strickland

TEMPLE HILL, Md. - Mr. William Andrew Strickland, 71, of 4006 20th Place died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at the Veteran Hospital in Washington, D.C.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Alexander S. Pope Funeral Home's Forestville Chapel, with the Rev. Marx Lyree officiating. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton, Md.

A native of Washington D.C., Mr. Strickland was educated in the D.C. public schools. He attended Howard University, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in sociology. He worked for Veteran Affairs in Washington as a supervisor of social work for more than 28 years. He worked for Montgomery County, Md., schools for 10 years.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Macon Strickland; two stepsons, Jerry N. Young of Charlotte and Purvis N. Young of Atlanta.; two stepdaughters, Tammy Denise Johnson and Towanna Y. Mannly, both of Charlotte; six stepgrandchildren; and his step great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Alexander S. Pope Funeral Home, Forestville Chapel, 5538 Marlboro Pike, Forestville, MD 20747.

Macon Funeral Home of Rock Hill is in charge of local arrangements.

Ethel Stroud

LANCASTER - Mrs. Ethel Vincent Stroud, 82, of 1838 Lynwood Drive died Friday, June 9, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at New Life Free Will Baptist Church, with the Revs. Joe Moore and Marty Cox officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Kershaw, Mrs. Stroud was a daughter of the late Brummett Vincent and Nettie Mackey Vincent. She was a member of New Life Free Will Baptist Church and was retired from Springs Industries.

Surviving are four sons, Billy Stroud, Glen Stroud, Donald "Spanky" Stroud and Kenny Stroud, all of Lancaster; four daughters, Brenda Stevens, Barbara Estes and Melissa Tucker, all of Lancaster, and Cuba Roland of Lexington; 21 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel, and at other times at the home.

Joyce Adkins

YORK - Mrs. Joyce Williams Adkins, 58, of 7205 Park Place Road died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at York Church of God, with the Rev. Donald Hawkins officiating. Burial will be at Bethesda Presbyterian Church cemetery.

A native of Newport, Mrs. Adkins was the daughter of Nellie Pursley Williams of York and the late Samuel S. Williams Sr. She was a member of the York Church of God and worked at Carswell Bakery. She was involved in various ministries.

Surviving in addition to her mother are two sons, Timothy D. "Daniel" Adkins and Thomas "Tommy Tucker" Adkins, both of York; her daughter, Angela "Angie" Gourley of York; her brother, Samuel "Bud" Williams Jr. of York; two sisters, Jane W. Kimbrell of Rock Hill and Frances W. Broome of Long Beach, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to York School District No. 1, Special Education Program, Harold C. Johnson Middle School, 18 Spruce St., York, SC 29745 or County 4-H Dairy Club.

Mary Bond

CHESTER - Mrs. Mary Earline Cannon Bond, 89, of 140 Crestwood Drive died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with the Revs. Thomas Morrison and Deacon Jon Dwyer officiating. Burial will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Catholic cemetery in Columbia.

A native of Columbia, Mrs. Bond was the daughter of the late Earl O. Cannon and Mary Heidt Cannon. She was the widow of James W. Bond.

Mrs. Bond was a homemaker and a graduate of St. Peter's School. She also was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Surviving are her son, Dr. James G. Bond of Rock Hill; her daughter, Anne B. Peterson of Chester; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The rosary will be 7 tonight at Barron Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends there until 8:30 p.m.

Harvey Cassels Sr.

CHESTER - Mr. Harvey Ross Cassels Sr., 84, of 1021 Darby Road died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Chester County Hospital.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Cassels was a retired owner and operator of Cassel's Plumbing and Heating Co. He attended Chester County schools. He was a member of Chester First Baptist Church and was a World War II Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia S. Cassels; his son, Harvey Ross "Buddy" Cassels of Rock Hill; his daughter, Dorothy Virginia Cassels of Chester; his brother, Joe Cassels of Spartanburg; and his sister, Margaret Lathan of Chester.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Roger Costner

VALE, N.C. - Mr. Roger Nelson Costner, 62, of 4273 Plateau Road died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Catawba Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Drum Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Byers officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Costner was the son of the late Johnny S. Costner and Hattie Brandon Costner. He was a retired mechanic from National Transmission Service and was a member of the National Guard and Army Reserve.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia A. Costner; two sons, Roger Costner Jr. and Jack Costner, both of Rock Hill; six daughters, Jeannie Costner, Deanna Scronce, Kimberly Costner, Misty Costner, Tricia Costner, Tricia R. Costner and Kay Costner, all of Vale, N.C.; two brothers, Ricky Costner of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Ray Costner of San Francisco; two sisters, Ruby Davis of Texas and Eloise Ballard of Rock Hill; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Drum Funeral Home in Conover, N.C.

James Gay

KERSHAW - Mr. James Esmond Gay, 68, of 83 Sawmill Road died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Kershaw County Medical Center in Camden.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jerry Satterfield and Don Knight officiating. Burial will be at the Bethany Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Orangeburg, Mr. Gay was the son of the late Hutson and Chessie Mae Fulmer Gay.

Mr. Gay was retired from the U.S. Army and was the owner of Gay's Small Engine. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, where he taught the J. L. Talley Sunday school class and served as a deacon and church treasurer.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Williams Gay; two sons, Richard Gay and Steven R. Owens, both of Kershaw; four daughters, Peggy Agrawal and Regina G. Phillips, both of Kershaw, Sabrina Kinzer of Genesee, Idaho, and Dianne Banks of Kershaw; his brother, Donald Gay of Kershaw; and 11 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

John McCrorey

CHESTER - Mr. John A. McCrorey, 60, of 628 Lancaster Highway, Apt. 224, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Rossville AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Anthony Commodore officiating and Pastor Keith Taylor assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. McCrorey was a son of the late Boss McCrorey and Alberta Gladden McCrorey. He was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Halseville. He was a former member of Rossville AME Zion Church. He attended the public schools of Chester County. He was a former employee of Springs Industries and Crawford Logging Co. of Union.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Lowery McCrorey; two sons, John Barber and Arthur Lee McCrorey, both of Richburg; two daughters, Jackie McCrorey of the home and Samantha McCrorey of Chester; his stepson, Kevin Lowery of Chester; his stepdaughter, Jennifer Lowery of Chester; two sisters, Isabelle Sharp of Greensboro, N.C. and Florie Dye of Richburg; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home and at the home of Peggy L. McCrorey, 528 Devine St., Chester.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Ruby Stowe

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Ruby Broome Stowe, 79, of 412 Liberty St. died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Ebenezer Nursing Home.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Laurelwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Shytle officiating.

A native of Great Falls, Mrs. Stowe was the daughter of the late Isaac Broome and Marie Wilson Broome. She was the widow of William H. Stowe.

Mrs. Stowe worked for M. Lowenstein and Son, Inc. for 42 years as a data processing clerk. She was a member of Oakland Baptist Church.

Surviving are three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Judy Campbell

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Judy Turner Campbell, 68, of 623 Morris St. died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Church of the Nazarene, with the Revs. Jesse Sims and Mike Dunlap officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Fort Lawn, Mrs. Campbell was a daughter of the late Joseph Turner and Alma Barnes Turner. She was a member of Grace Church of the Nazarene and worked as a nursery attendant at Kiddie College.

Surviving are her husband, James K. Campbell; two daughters, Diane Jackson of York and Debra Sutton of Catawba, her granddaughter whom she raised, Michelle McCumbee of McConnells; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Grace Church of the Nazarene, 1029 Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill, SC, 29732.

Edna Colvin

CHESTER - Mrs. Edna Williams Colvin, 72, of 2251/2 Ligon St. died Friday, June 9, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Armenia Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.E. Darby officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Richmond, Va., Colvin was a daughter of the late Andrew Williams and Millie Dye Williams. She was a member of Armenia Baptist Church and a former member of Gethsemane Baptist Church. She attended public schools in Chester and was a retired domestic worker. She was the widow of the Louis Colvin Sr.

Surviving are her six sons, Andrew Williams of Baltimore, Sylvester Williams of the home, Nathaniel Colvin, Louis Colvin, Jr. and Willie Colvin, all of Chester, and Theodore Colvin of Charlotte; six daughters, Helen Hayes, Louise Colvin, Gloria Johnson, Rosa Johnson, Martha Booker and Ernestine Hall, all of Chester; her sister, Marie Colvin of Chester; her brother, Thomas Williams of Baltimore; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence. The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.

Richard Horton

MYRTLE BEACH - Mr. Richard Horton, 60, of Myrtle Beach, formerly of Lancaster, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Second Baptist Church, with the Revs. David Ward and Larry Helm officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Horton was a son of Mary Hunter Horton and the late Ira Guy Horton. He was a former real-estate broker and was former owner of The Lancaster Steak House. At the time of his death, he was the manger of The Comet Motor Inn in Myrtle Beach. Mr. Horton served in the South Carolina National Guard Reserve and was a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple, Jackson Masonic Lodge No. 53. He was a member of Second Baptist Church, and he was an original band member of the rock "n' roll band "The Nomads."

Surviving in addition to his mother are his daughter, Debbie Harden of Virginia Beach, Va.; his son, Chuck Horton of Fort Mill; his sister, Linda H. Seed of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church building fund, 1426 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.
