Eudora Markham

WINNSBORO - Mrs. Eudora Dover Markham, 89, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at The Presbyterian Home in Columbia.

The funeral was April 18 at Sion Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Peter Creighton officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Markham was a daughter of the late James Ray Dover and Lottie Hines Dover. A graduate of Winthrop College, she was retired from the S.C. Department of Social Services and was a member of Sion Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband, John Calvin Markham Jr.; two sons, John Calvin Markham III of Weston, Mass., and Michael Dover Markham of Charlotte; her brother, James Ray Dover Jr. of Rock Hill; three grandchildren; and her great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to Sion Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 556, Winnsboro, SC 29180 or a charity of one's choice.

Pope Funeral Home was in charge.

Carl Massey Sr.

ROCK HILL - Dr. Carl Benjamin Massey Sr., 67, of 1925 Malvern Road died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with Drs. Shelton P. Sanford III and William A. fox officiating. Burial will be at Ebenezer ARP Church cemetery.

A native of Waxhaw, N.C., Dr. Massey was a son of the late Thomas Neely Massey Sr. and Laura McMurray Massey. He was a graduate of Presbyterian College and University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. Dr. Massey was an infantry officer in the U.S. Army and practiced dentistry in Rock Hill for 28 years. He was past president of Tri-County Dental Society and was a member of Tri-County Dental Study Class, American Dental Association, Central District Dental Society, Psi Omega Dental fraternity at UNC, UNC Dental Alumni, Federal Research Grant at UNC, U.S. Army Dental Corps and Reserves.

Dr. Massey was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon, youth leader and basketball coach and sang in the adult choir. He was a president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Elks Club.

Surviving are his wife, Marian Rowe Massey; two sons, Carl Benjamin Massey Jr. of Rock Hill and John Davin Massey of Charleston; and his brother, Dr. Thomas N. Massey of Charlotte.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral home, Rock Hill chapel, and other times at the home.

Linda Roach

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Linda Louise Roach, 55, of North Myrtle Beach died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Linda Dunn officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Roach was a daughter of the late Jack L. Roach Sr. and Mary E. Roach of Rock Hill. Mrs. Roach attended Kings College and retired from Bowater as a secretary. She was a lifetime member of Antioch United Methodist Church. She was an avid golfer.

Surviving are her mother; three brothers, Richard M. Roach, Jack L. Roach Jr. and Michael D. Roach, all of Rock Hill; her sister, Sue R. Rogers of Rock Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mary E. Roach, 1472 Highway 324, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to Antioch United Methodist Church, 1671 Highway 324, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

John Simpson Jr.

LANCASTER - Mr. John Dillon "Johnny" Simpson Jr., 46, of 473 S. Potter Road died Wednesday, May 3, 2000.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Revs. Kenneth Wren and Dr. Stuart Snow officiating.

A native of Union County, Mr. Simpson was a son of Paris Griffin Simpson of Lancaster and the late John Dillon Simpson Sr. He worked in the construction business as a heavy-equipment operator. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Judy Ann Hunter Simpson; two sons, Jerrod Simpson of Lancaster and Matthew Simpson of Fort Mill; two daughters, Jennifer Simpson of Charlotte and Megan Simpson of Fort Mill; his sister, Donna Pope of Charlotte; his stepson, Timmy Hunter of Lancaster; his stepdaughter, Tammy Cook of Lancaster; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Paul Wright

FORT MILL - Mr. Paul Esburt Wright, 68, of 1436 Banks Road died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral was Wednesday at Glenrock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gene Flack officiating. Burial will be at Unity Cemetery.

A native of Fort Mill, Mr. Wright was a son of the late Robert W. Wright and Sally Mae Stewart Wright. He served in the Korean War and was an Army and Air Force veteran. Mr. Wright was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9138 and was a member of Disabled American Veterans. A former Lancaster resident, he was a self-employed painter.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Simmons Wright; five sons, Tony Oliver of Rock Hill, Kenny Patrick of McConnells, Paul Wright Jr. of Pelzer and Rob Rollins and Ralph Dickson, both of Lancaster; three daughters, Patricia Miller and Phyllis Kilgo, both of Rock Hill, and Marie Knight of Lancaster; his brother, Robert Wright of Fort Mill; and his sister, Thelma Hord.

Fort Mill Funeral Home was in charge.

Gracie Burris

GASTONIA, N.C. - Ms. Gracie Elizabeth Burris, 25, of 105 Nat Barber Ave. died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital in Kings Mountain, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Home. Burial will be at Gold Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of York, she was a daughter of Clinzo Mackins of Clover and the late Lizzie Burris.

Surviving in addition to her father are her stepmother, Janet Mackins of Clover; two brothers, Gregory Burris of Gastonia and Clinzo C. Mackins Jr. of Clover; her sister, Pamela Marie Burris of Gastonia; her grandfather, Harry Lee Phillips of Lake Wylie; her paternal grandmother, Edna Mackins of Gastonia; and her maternal grandmother, Parsinia Collins of the home.

The body may be viewed from 5 to 8 tonight at Wright Funeral Home in York.

Robert Cabaniss Sr.

CHESTER - Mr. Robert Stanley Cabaniss Sr., 52, of 729 Cornwell Road died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Clyde Mitchum and Robert Hicks officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Union, Mr. Cabaniss was a son of Robert Lindsey Cabaniss of Chester and the late Lillian Sutherland Cabaniss. Mrs. Cabaniss was a carpenter with Leitner Construction Co. He attended Chester County schools and was a member of Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Wanda B. Cabaniss; his son, Robert S. "Lee" Cabaniss Jr. of Fort Stewart, Fla.; his daughter, Bettina "Tina" Cabaniss of Chester; and three sisters, Brenda Branham, Carol Gerbers and Peggy Cabaniss, all of Chester.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Christopher Dixon and Xavier Dixon

ROCK HILL - Christopher Alexander Dixon and Xavier Alexander Dixon, infant sons of April S. Dixon and Avery Latta, died Monday, May 1, 2000, and Tuesday, May 2, 2000, respectively, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The graveside service will be 4:30 p.m. today at Gold Hill Baptist Church in York, with the Rev. George McCoy officiating.

Surviving in addition to their parents are their sister, Tybrecia N. Dixon of the home; their maternal grandparents, Edward Dixon and Mary G. Dixon of the home; their maternal great-grandfather, Clyde Gilmore of Clover; and their paternal great-grandmother, Helen Dixon of Rock Hill.

Wright's Funeral Home is in charge.

Olivia Dixon

YORK - Mrs. Olivia Tate Dixon, 88, of 24 Center St. died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at New Home AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Dr. C.J. Jenkins officiating and the Rev. Darial Jackson assisting. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A native of Tirzah, Mrs. Dixon was a daughter of the late Fred Davis and Nancy Davis Tate. She was the widow of William "Jack" Tate. Mrs. Dixon was a member of the New Home AME Zion Church, where she was a member of the hymn choir, the Willing Workers, the Missionary Society and the stewardess board.

Surviving are her daughter, Doris Doretha Hymes of York; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Wright Funeral Home is in charge.

Carrie Douglas

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Carrie Bell Douglas, 64, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Jamaica Hospital in Jamaica, N.Y.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Cross Road Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.E. Boulware officiating. Burial will be at Greater Foundation AME Zion Church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Douglas was the daughter of the late Wardell McWain and Estelle Barber. She was graduate of Emmett Scott High School. She was employed at the Berkley Photo Industrial until the business closed. She became a nurse's assistant in the Jamaica Service Program for Older Adults and Theodora G. Jackson Senior Center. She was a member of St. John's Baptist Church of Jamaica, where she was a member of the gospel chorus and the Willing Workers. She was a member of the Unionaire Gospel Singers.

Surviving are her husband, Samuel E. Douglas Jr.; three sons, James O. Scott McWain Sr. of Jonesboro, La., Mervin W. Scott Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Kelvin R. Scott of Harrisburg, Pa.; four sisters, Jeanette Gamble and Carrie E. Harding, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Alice R. Perry of Rock Hill and Willie Ruth Barnette of Charlotte; five brothers, Robert Hemphill, John L. Ellis and George R. Ellis, all of Rock Hill, James T. Ellis of Willingboro, N.J., and Charles R. Ellis of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Robinson Funeral Home and at other times at 1748 King Drive.

The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Luther Love

CHESTER - Mr. Luther Ervin Love, 78, of 143 Lacy St. died Wednesday, May 3, 2000.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Jody Foster officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Love was a son of the late Martin Luther Love and Jessie Curry Love. He was retired from Springs Industries and attended Chester County schools. Mr. Love was an Army veteran of World War II and served with the 31st Infantry Division (Dixie Division) in the South Pacific. He was a York Rite Mason and was a member of Chester Masonic Lodge No. 18. He was a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple and was president of the Chester Shrine Club in 1984. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Bernice Miller Love; two sons, Johnny E. Love of Norfolk, Va., and Terry M. Love of Fort Lawn; two daughters, Patricia Mercelle Curtis and Nancy Love Bass, both of Chester; his sister, Alberta Love Bundy of Chester; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

James Willhite

LANCASTER - Mr. James Alan "Jimmy" Willhite, 39, of 4081 Shiloh Unity Road died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Spring Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Greg Towler and James Goude officiating.

A native of Pine Bluff, Ark., he was the son of George W. Willhite of Gwinn, Mich., and the late Annette Louise Gregg Willhite. Mr. Willhite was a self-employed drywall technician and was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, L. Jane Horton Willhite; two sons, Greg Horton and Andrew Willhite, both of the home; four daughters, April Willhite, Amy Willhite and Willhite, all of the home, and Crystal Willhite of Charleston; his brother, Ronald "Ronnie" Willhite of Simpsonville; and two sisters, Gay Stalvey of Conway and Linda Tovar of Valdosta, Ga.

Ruby Wilson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Ruby Lynn Burnette Wilson, 77, 1035 Hearn St. died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare Center.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Greene Funeral Home, downtown chapel, with Chaplain Miriam Mick officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Wilson was a daughter of the late Bynum R. Burnette and Hessie Brewer Burnette. She was the widow of Clarence B. Wilson. She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 2885. She worked for the York County Council on Aging.

Surviving are her son, Craig Burnette of Decatur, Ga.; her stepson, Donald Wilson of Easley; her brother, H.E. Burnette of Rock Hill; two sisters, Grace Kennington of Rock Hill and Ruth McCreavy of Spartanburg; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the memorial service.

Julius Yoder Sr.

VAN WYCK - Mr. Julius Middleton Yoder Sr., 86, of 8130 Van Wyck Road died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Ebenezer Nursing Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Van Wyck Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Randy McSpadden officiating. Entombment will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park Mausoleum.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Yoder was the son of the late Cecil Yoder and Cora Yoder. He was a retired plant manager for Ashe Brick Co. and was a member of Van Wyck Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Jo Eva Morris Yoder; his son, Julius Middleton Yoder Jr. of Rock Hill; three daughters, Julia Whitmire of Van Wyck, Cecelia McCall of Rock Hill and Joann Wright of Ridgeway; his brother, Robert "Pete" Yoder of Van Wyck; three sisters, Myrtle Dobson of Lancaster, Mary McGillacuddy of Charlotte and Clyde Helen Lickey of Richmond, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster. Memorial contributions may be made to Van Wyck Presbyterian Church, Van Wyck, SC 29744.
