Lucy Clemons
Family members remember Lucy Clemons as someone always willing to give to others.
Clemons, owner of Clemons Funeral Home in Rock Hill, died Sunday at home. She started the funeral home in 1932 with her husband, William.
Her daughter, Delcine Jones, said her mother thought nothing of driving someone to Columbia or Charleston for a doctor's appointment or giving them money to go visit a family member in New York.
"If they could pay it back, fine. If not, that was OK, too," Jones said. "She was just a good person. She always went that extra step, that extra mile."
For 21 years, Clemons was a teacher as well as part-owner of the funeral home before retiring and devoting all of her time to the funeral home.
"She liked working with the community and helping people in their time of need," Jones said. "She just liked people."
Jones said her mother always told her to treat people the way she would want them to treat her. She also taught her daughter to be strong.
Jones took care of her mother after she suffered a stroke a few years ago. Before the stroke, Clemons liked to cook and crochet and sometimes spoke at local churches.
"She liked talking with people - visiting with them on their porches. She would talk to them hours at a time," Jones said.
Clemons was a Worthy Matron of Rose of Sharon Eastern Star and a deputy of the Eastern Star. She also served as South Carolina representative at the Republican National Convention in 1956.
A member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church, Clemons also attended Flint Hill Baptist Church when her health allowed.
Jones describes her as a strong Christian.
Her niece, Lillian Bright of Rock Hill, said Clemons always was ready to give out words of encouragement along with a helping hand.
"She loved to laugh. She had a beautiful spirit," Bright said.
