Edith “Pete” Griffin Dominick

Edith “Pete” Griffin Dominick, 86, of 157 Lester Street, Silverstreet, beloved wife of 68 years of J. Allen Dominick died Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC.
Mrs. Dominick was born on May 29, 1917 in Elberton, GA, a daughter of the late William L. and Lula Chandler Griffin. She was a former employee of Belk-Beard Department Store and a retired cosmetologist.
Mrs. Dominick was a member of the Silverstreet Lutheran Church and W.E.L.C.A. She was also a former choir member and a Sunday School teacher, having taught for over 50 years.
Mrs. Dominick is survived by her husband; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald A. and Marilyn Dominick of Summerville and J. William “Bill” and Judy Dominick of Charlotte; five grandchildren and spouses, Greg and Cindy Dominick of Greenwood, Stacy and Brent Lyons and Kristin D. Bolick, all of Charlotte, Robin and Tim Still of Cummings, GA and Meloney and Jimmy Timmons of Bonneau, SC; and 10 great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Edith “Pete” Griffin Dominick will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Friday at Silverstreet Lutheran Church by the Rev. Floyd Sides and Rev. Bob McCollum. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 P. M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Laval H. Johnson
February 9, 2004
Laval H. Johnson, 57, of 440 Paul Long Road, Newberry, died at his residence, February 9, 2004.
Mr. Johnson was born on December 8, 1946 in Newberry County, a son of the late Oscar L. and Mildred Hipp Johnson. He was a member of Smyrna Presbyterian Church and was formerly employed by Fulmer Building Supply in Newberry. He was a member of Whitmire Roseboro Masonic Lodge # 195.
Mr. Johnson is survived by three sons, Keith A. Johnson of Newberry, Brent E. Johnson of Marietta, GA and Brian S. Johnson of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Wednesday at the Smyrna Presbyterian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Scott Hill.
Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
Active pallbearers will be Larry Gilliam, Phil Rowe, Luther Long, Randy Senn, Benjie Sanders, and Paul Long.

Henry L. Parr

Henry L. Parr, 79, of Newberry, died Saturday, February 7, 2004 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Parr was born in Newberry County on September 2, 1924, a son of the late Callie Boyd and Mary Nance Parr. He graduated from Clemson College with high honors in 1947. He interrupted his college education on December 8, 1942 to join the US Air Force and became a B-24 pilot during World War II.
Mr. Parr founded Headspring Farm in Newberry County in 1950 and led the dairy farming operations of the farm for 45 years assisted by his sons Boyd and Calhoun for over 20 years. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, his Jersey herd was the top producing Jersey herd of over 200 cows in the nation. He led the development of growing alfalfa in upstate South Carolina.
In 1959 he was named the outstanding South Carolina Young Farmer of the year. The Progressive Farmer Magazine recognized him and his family as a Master Farm Family in 1968. His other dairy farm honors include the South Carolina Dairy Leadership Award, the South Carolina Purebred Dairy Cattle Association Master Breeder Award and the South Carolina Jersey Cattle Club’s Honors award. He was an active member of the South Carolina Farm Bureau serving as a state director for 32 years, a member of the South Carolina Farm Bureau Marketing Association Board, the Chairman of the Farm Bureau Land Use Committee, and the Farm Bureau Dairy Executive Committee, as well as president and board member of the Newberry County Farm Bureau. He was a charter member of the Bush River Young Farmers.
Mr. Parr was a life long member of the Newberry Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and deacon and for 35 years as a teacher of the Olin Cannon Bible Class.
Mr. Parr is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mittie Bryan Parr, a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Parr Whitesides and Dr. Daniel Whitesides of Charlotte, NC; three sons and daughters-in-law, Henry L. Parr, Jr. and Lillian Webb Parr of Greenville and Dr. Boyd H. Parr and Cheryl Brubaker Parr and Calhoun B. Parr and Louise Davis Parr all of Newberry; and grandchildren Mary Boyd and Daniel Bennett Whitesides of Charlotte, NC; Henry Lakin and Elizabeth Givens Parr of Greenville; Bryan Henry Parr of Arlington, VA; , Jonathan Boyd, Ruth Virginia, and Timothy Allen Parr of Newberry ; and Leona Elizabeth and Mittie Elaine Parr also of Newberry; and one brother David Boyd Parr of Newberry. He was predeceased by three brothers Callie Boyd Parr, Jr., James Nance Parr, and William Wilson Parr.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
Funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 9 at the Newberry Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church followed by burial in Rosemont Cemetery

Bernice McMichael Cousins

Bernice McMichael Cousins, 100, of 1130 Douglas St., Newberry, widow of Ira T. Cousins, died Thursday, February 05, 2004 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Cousins was born on January 16, 1904 in Jackson GA, a daughter of the late Joseph E. and Virgie Maddox McMichael. She was a homemaker and a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. She was a founding member of the Town and Country Garden Club.
She is survived by three daughters, Jo Ann Cousins of Newberry, Virginia Cousins McMath, of Stafford VA, and Betty Cousins Campbell of Fitzgerald GA; two sons, Warren R. Cousins of Newberry and Walter B. Cousins of Irmo; five sisters, Ruth Hopkins of Jacksonville, FL and Evelyn Nix, Elizabeth McMichael, Helen Ham, and Gwendolyn Morris all of Jackson, GA; one brother, Warren McMichael of Jacksonville, FL; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson and four sisters.
Funeral services for Bernice M. Cousins will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Sunday at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Steven Counts. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. Saturday at her residence, 1130 Douglas St.

Sara Bradberry Baker

Sara Bradberry Baker, 87, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at the Lowman Home.
Mrs. Baker, having moved to Chapin four years ago from Florida, was formerly a resident at Generations of Chapin and most recently, a resident of the Lowman Home Nursing Center.
A gentle soul, her great enjoyment was the beauty of nature and working in her garden with her hands in the dirt.
Mrs. Baker is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Hart and Sallie Baker of Chapin; 3 sisters, 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be held in Montgomery, Alabama

Mary Ellen Taylor Dowd, 94, of 1708 Clarkson Ave., Newberry, widow of Chief Colie L. Dowd, died Saturday, March 20, 2004 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Dowd was born on October 3, 1909 in Prosperity, a daughter of the late Dudley F. and Agnes Dominick Taylor. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, the Cromer Hipp Sunday School Class; the WELCA, and the Newberry Chapter Order of the Eastern Star 226.
Mrs. Dowd is survived by a daughter, Katherine D. Dawkins of Newberry; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph E. and Betty Taylor of Griffin GA; five grandchildren and spouses, Janis and Clarence Purvis, Candace Taylor, Michael D. and Pegi Taylor, Mark Taylor, and Matthew D. and Vicki Taylor; seven great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren and a special friend Val Tyska.
Funeral services for Mary Ellen Dowd will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Steven Counts. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home and the family will be at her residence, 1708 Clarkson Ave.

Elbert Lee Hilley

Elbert Lee Hilley, 72, of 2709 Digby Ave., Newberry died Saturday, March 20, 2004 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. He graduated from the school of life and has entered Glory University.
Mr. Hilley was born in Newberry, a son of the late Robert L. and Alma Horton Hilley. He was a retired employee of the Kendall Co., Oakland Plant. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War having served in the 81st Airborne and he was a retired Sargent from the S.C. National Guard. He was a member of the Newberry Church of God of Prophecy and was a licensed Deacon.
Mr. Hilley is survived by his wife, Hazel Farmer Hilley of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Maxine and Vernon Koon and Mona Hilley Taylor all of Newberry; a brother, James Hilley of Newberry; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services for Elbert Lee Hilley will be conducted at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday at College Street Church of God by the Rev. Vernon Koon, Rev. Sam Smith, and the Rev. Arthur Worley. Interment will be in the Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 P. M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
