George Dickinson Jr.

HARTSVILLE - Mr. George Moye Dickinson Jr., 92, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Mitch Houston and Joe Tysinger officiating. Burial will be at the Magnolia Cemetery.

Born in Bamburg, Mr. Dickinson was the son of the late George Moye and Minnie Johnson Dickinson Sr. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and a former member of the Civitan Club.

Mr. Dickinson retired from Sonoco Products Company as a chemist after 36 years of service. He graduated from Clemson University and received a master's degree from the University of South Carolina.

Surviving are his wife, Hortense Sandifer Dickinson of Hartsville; his son, George Moye of Fort Mill; his daughter, Martha Moye of Hartsville; four grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church.

William Gettys

ROCK HILL -"Mr. William Gettys, 89, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Neely's Creek ARP Church Cemetery, with the Dr. Robert J. Robinson officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Gettys was a son of the late John Ebenezer Gettys and Maud Martin Gettys. He graduated from Rock Hill High School and later from Erskine College. He then worked with the Equitable Life Insurance Company in Boston.

Mr. Gettys joined the U.S. Army during World War II and served in Europe and Alaska, then retired with more than 20 years of service. He was a lifelong member of the First Associate Reformed Presby-terian Church and was a member of the Elks Club, the Frank Roach American Legion Post 34 and VFW 2889.

Surviving are his sister, Sara R. Gettys of Rock Hill; his brother, Tom S. Gettys of Rock Hill; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the home of his sister, Sara Gettys, at 604 E. Main St.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Erskine College Flying Fleet Club, c/o Chip Sherer, 2 Washington St. Due West, SC 29639.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.

Ben Matthews

GASTONIA, N.C. - Mr. Ben Matthews, 88, of 936 N. Highland Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be noon Friday at Pleasant Ridge AME Zion Church, with the Rev. David A. Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Matthews was a son of the late George Matthews and Sue Brown Matthews. He was a retired fork-lift driver.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline Woody Matthews of Gastonia; his son, Tommy Davis of Long Pond, Pa.; three daughters, Mary M. Adams of York, Sharon B. Smarr of Greensboro, N.C., and Belinda Barnett of Gastonia; his brother, James Matthews of Gastonia,; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 to noon Friday at Pleasant Ridge AmE Zion Church.

Costner Funeral Home is in charge.

Wilma Mills

ROCK HILL - Mr. Wilma L. Mills, 60, of 174 McFadden St. died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Gold Hill Baptist Church in York, with the Rev. George McCoy officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Mills worked at Becker Minerals as a loader operator and was a member of Gold Hill Baptist Church. He was educated in the Fairfield County public schools. He was the son of James H. Mills and Mary Robinson Mills.

Surviving are his wife, Hattie Moore Mills; his son, Micheal A. Mills of the home; his daughter, Pat Warren of Rock Hill; five brothers, Henry Mills of the home, Eddie Mills and Jerry Mills, both of Rock Hill, Johnny Mills of Gastonia, N.C., and Charles A. Mills of Niceville, Fla.; two sisters, Rosa Mills and Sharon M. Cherry, both of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends at the home. The body may be viewed today at Parker Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday.

Evelyn Watson

RUBY - Mrs. Evelyn Sellers Watson, 78, died Tuesday, Oct 19, 1999.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hopewell Baptist Church cemetery in Chesterfield.

A native of Ruby, Mrs. Watson was a retired employee of Burlington Industries and wasa member of Hopewell Baptist Church.

She was the daughter of the late W.A. "Tiney" Sellers and Corrie Elizabeth Moore Sellers.

Surviving are her husband, Tommy Watson; two daughters Doris Gaskins of Rock Hill and Betty Surratte of Cheraw; her sister, Nettie Haithcock of Pageland; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her great-great grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home in Chesterfield.

Memorials may be made to Hopewell Baptist Church "Building Fund," Route 2, Box 150, Chesterfield, SC 29709, or to McLeod's Guest House, 422 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

Willie Brown

BRONX, N.Y. - Mr. Willie James "Willie Jap" Brown, 64, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Calvary Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Chapel AME Zion Church in Sharon, with the Rev. Dennis McCleave officiating and the Revs. Edward Brown, Blanche Jamerson and William McClain assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Sharon, Mr. Brown was a son of the late Clem Brown and Dean Burkins. He was a retired security guard for IBI Security in the Bronx, where he worked for 25 years. A member of Wilson Chapel AME Zion Church, he later joined Christian Union Baptist Church in the Bronx, where he was a member of the choir. Mr. Brown sang with the Cosmatics Gospel singing group and was a member of King Soloman's Temple Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Pettus Brown; three sons, Clement J. McCombs of Sharon, Lester McCombs of Spartanburg, and David Mitchel of the Bronx; four brothers, Thornia Brown, the Rev. Edward Brown and Larry Brown, all of York, and John Brown of Gastonia, N.C.; four sisters, the Rev. Blanche Jamerson, Leona Thompson and Wilma Brown Gore, all of York, and Ella Mae Brown Allison of Gastonia; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, the Rev. Edward Brown, 30 Maiden Lane, York.

The body may be viewed from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home in York.

John Adams Jr.

CLOVER - Mr. John Adams Jr., 69, of 1463 Lawrence Road died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Gethsemane Apostles and Prophets Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, with the Rev. W.T. Lowery officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Clover, Mr. Adams was a son of the late John Adams Sr. and Janie Kithcart. He was the owner of Adams City Auto Parts.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine Tate Adams; eight sons, Randy Adams, Joe Adams, Norman Adams, Johnny Adams and Daniel James Adams, all of Charlotte, Edward Christopher Adams of Rock Hill and Thomas Eugene Adams and Phillip Adams, both of the home; five daughters, Joyce Witters of Sheltenham, Md., Sandra A. Atakora of Alexandria, Va., Sarah J. Morrison of Waxhaw, N.C., Cathy Adams of Stanley, N.C., and Naomi A. Montgomery of Rock Hill; two brothers, Isaiah Adams and Johnson E. Adams, both of Clover; three sisters, Verine Asbury and Emma Sue Nance, both of Knoxville, Tenn., and Elizabeth A. Matthews of Clover; and 17 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Ansel Bruce

FORT MILL - Mr. Ansel N. Bruce, 84, of 113 Ervin St. died Wed-nesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wolfe Funeral Home, with the Revs. Robert Cook and Scott Gibson officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Williamston, Mr. Bruce was a son of the late Clyde Leo Bruce Sr. and Carrie Stone Bruce. He worked as a loom fixer for Springs Industries and J.P. Stevens. He was a Navy SeaBee in World War II and spent 17 months in the Philippines. Mr. Bruce was a member of Fort Mill American Legion Post 43.

Surviving are his wife, Dezaree Pilgrim Bruce; two sons, Leo M. Bruce of Rock Hill and Barry L. Bruce of York; three brothers, Clyde L. Bruce Jr. of Pelzer, the Rev. Walter T. Bruce of Great Falls and Earl D. Bruce of Frostproof, Fla.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wolfe Funeral home and at other times at the home.

David Cathcart II

ROCK HILL - Mr. David Lee Cathcart II, 26, of 1073 Southland Drive died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Richburg, with the Rev. Robert Johnson II officiating and Bishop Tommy Durham and the Rev. Louvenia Pride assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Cathcart was a son of David L. Cathcart of Atlanta and the late Sandora Gordon Cathcart. He was a former fast food cashier. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his father are two brothers, Leon Cathcart of the home and DeMorris Cathcart of Charlotte; his sister, Cassandra C. Massey of Rock Hill; and his paternal grandmother, Emma Cathcart of Baltimore.

The family will receive friends at home.

The body may be viewed from 2 to 7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Parker Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Joann Jones

GREENVILLE - Mrs. Joann Buchanan Jones, 64, of 133 Hialeah Road died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999.

A memorial service was Thursday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home.

A native of Anderson, Mrs. Jones was a daughter of Colie Sharpton Buchanan of Rock Hill and the late Herman Clay Buchanan. She graduated from Rock Hill High School and attended Furman University.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Robert Bryson Jones; her daughter, Sara Lynn Jones of Greenville; her son, Robert Bryson Jones of Greenville; her sister, Kathy Buchanan Henderson of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Interim Hospice, 775 Spartan Blvd., Suite 101, Spartanburg, SC 29301.

Maxine Cooper

LANCASTER - Mrs. Maxine Robinson Cooper, 69, of 1250 Memorial Park Road died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Springdell Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Bill Poore and the Rev. Jerry DeVenny officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Cooper was a daughter of the late Otis Robinson and Viola Nicholson Robinson. She was the widow of Porter S. Cooper. Mrs. Cooper was retired from Springs Industries Lancaster Plant as a time keeper in the carding department. She was a member of Springdell Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Deborah Cooper Snead of Lancaster; two sisters, Josephine Robinson and Dorothy Estridge, both of Lancaster; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Reuben Deese

MONROE, N.C. - Mr. Reuben Neal Deese, 86, of 1212 Sunset Road East died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Union Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Stough Memorial Baptist Church in Pineville, N.C., with the Revs. Bruce League and Steve Jacks officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe.

A native of Monroe, N.C., Mr. Deese was a son of the late John Deese and Emma Treadway Deese. He was a truck driver and was a member of Stough Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving are his son, Mel Deese of Fort Mill; three daughters, Betty D. Kimbrell of Fort Mill, Mary D. Lane of Pineville and Debbie D. Sanderson of Lancaster; their mother, Thelma Deese of Pineville; his brother, Hurley Deese of Kannapolis, N.C.; his sister, Pauline Mitchell of Cadiz, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home and at the home of Mel Deese, 792 Fort Mill Highway.

Lisa Ford

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Lisa Cook Ford, 30, of 1157 Princeton Road died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Patricia Griffith-Fallaw and David Kemp officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Ford was a daughter of Robert B. "Bob" Cook and Janette Johnson Cook. She was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and Winthrop University and was a recipient of the E.C. Giles Scholarship. Mrs. Giles was a member of the National Social Workers Association and Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Jeffrey Wayne Ford; her daughter, Briana Lacey Ford of the home; her brother, Robert B. Cook Jr. of Charlotte; and her sister, Susan C. Reeves of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her parents, Bob and Janette Cook, 640 Morningside Drive, Rock Hill.
